The neurology of memory: quantitative assessment of retrograde amnesia in two groups of amnesic patients.

The phenomenon of retrograde amnesia has important implications for understanding normal memory as well as its neural organization. Using 6 tests of remote memory, we evaluated the extent and severity of retrograde amnesia in 2 groups of amnesic patients--7 patients with alcoholic Korsakoff's syndrome and 5 other patients with amnesia (anoxia or ischemia, N = 3; thalamic infarction, N = 1; unknown etiology, N = 1). Although there were individual differences, Experiment 1 showed that the severity and extent of retrograde amnesia was similar for the 2 groups. Retrograde amnesia was temporally gr

Electrodermal discrimination of familiar but not unfamiliar faces in prosopagnosia.

It has been previously shown that prosopagnosics can electrodermally "recognize" faces they cannot verbally identify and with which they feel no familiarity. This study extended previous results by showing that electrodermal discrimination of faces exists only on a famous face identification task, and not on a matching-to-sample task involving unfamiliar faces. This suggests that electrodermal recognition reflects the activation of stored identity-specific information built up on the basis of past contact with faces, and provides a psychophysiological distinction between familiar and unfamilia

Retrograde amnesia for forty years.

We describe a patient who, in the absence of anterograde amnesia, experienced sudden onset of profound retrograde amnesia for the last forty years of his life. The amnesia encompassed all knowledge, including motor skills, acquired during these forty years. There has been no recovery in over eighteen months. His symptoms seem most consistent with a vascular etiology. Current understanding of memory disorders fails to explain these symptoms. It may be that his case represents a previously undescribed disorder.

The comparison of small-size rectangle and checkerboard stimulation for the evaluation of delayed visual evoked responses in patients suspected of multiple sclerosis.

The use of foveal small-size rectangle stimulation to elicit visual evoked responses was compared with VERs elicited by the standard checkerboard pattern. Foveal stimulation achieved a significantly better discrimination of optic nerve lesions in the early diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Sources of misdiagnosis due to different neurological disorders are discussed.

[The influence of recognition of a visual stimulus on evoked potentials of the projection and non-projection areas of the cerebral cortex].

Evoked potentials (EP) were recorded in the projection and non-projection areas of the cerebral cortex in juveniles in response to exposures of structured visual stimuli with subthreshold and supraliminal durations. The data obtained have shown that recognition of the presented stimulus is attended with intensification of the EP late complex. This effect is most pronouned in the central and frontal parts of the cortex. The Nv component with a 240 to 300 msec latency has a more regular connection with recognition as compared with other components.

Neural basis subserving the detection of postural instability: an fMRI study.

Human upright posture is a product of a complex dynamic system that relies on integration of input from multimodal sensory sources. Extensive research has explored the role of visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems in the control of upright posture. However, the role of higher cognitive function in a participant's assessment of postural stability has been less studied. In previous research, we showed specific neural activation patterns in EEG associated with recognition of unstable postures in young healthy participants. Similar EEG patterns have been recently observed in regulation of

Saccadic eye movements and face recognition performance in patients with central glaucomatous visual field defects.

Patients with more advanced glaucoma are likely to experience problems with everyday visual tasks such as face recognition. However, some patients still perform well at face recognition despite their visual field (VF) defects. This study investigated whether certain eye movement patterns are associated with better performance in the Cambridge Face Memory Test. For patients with bilateral VF defects in their central 10° of VF, making larger saccades appeared to be associated with better face recognition performance (rho=0.60, p=0.001). Associations were less apparent for the patients without si

The clinical approach to the identification of higher-order visual dysfunction in neurodegenerative disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is intended to assist the reader in gaining the knowledge and skills necessary for the recognition and assessment of higher-order visual dysfunction due to neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, Parkinson's dementia, corticobasal degeneration, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and the posterior cortical atrophy syndrome. Clinical problem-solving and pattern recognition must be developed and practiced to accurately diagnosis disturbances of higher-order visual function, and knowledge of higher-order visual brain regions and t

Opposing dorsal/ventral stream dynamics during figure-ground segregation.

The visual system has been commonly subdivided into two segregated visual processing streams: The dorsal pathway processes mainly spatial information, and the ventral pathway specializes in object perception. Recent findings, however, indicate that different forms of interaction (cross-talk) exist between the dorsal and the ventral stream. Here, we used TMS and concurrent EEG recordings to explore these interactions between the dorsal and ventral stream during figure-ground segregation. In two separate experiments, we used repetitive TMS and single-pulse TMS to disrupt processing in the dorsal

fMRI evidence for sensorimotor transformations in human cortex during smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SP) are driven by moving objects. The pursuit system processes the visual input signals and transforms this information into an oculomotor output signal. Despite the object's movement on the retina and the eyes' movement in the head, we are able to locate the object in space implying coordinate transformations from retinal to head and space coordinates. To test for the visual and oculomotor components of SP and the possible transformation sites, we investigated three experimental conditions: (I) fixation of a stationary target with a second target moving across th

Impaired visual processing preceding image recognition in Parkinson's disease patients with visual hallucinations.

Impaired visual processing may play a role in the pathophysiology of visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease. In order to study involved neuronal circuitry, we assessed cerebral activation patterns both before and during recognition of gradually revealed images in Parkinson's disease patients with visual hallucinations (PDwithVHs), Parkinson's disease patients without visual hallucinations (PDnonVHs) and healthy controls. We hypothesized that, before image recognition, PDwithVHs would show reduced bottom-up visual activation in occipital-temporal areas and increased (pre)frontal activatio

Quantitative EEG Signatures through Amplitude and Phase Modulation Patterns.

Cortical spatiotemporal signal patterns based on object recognition can be discerned from visual stimulation. These are in the form of amplitude modulation (AM) and phase modulation (PM) patterns, which contain perceptual information gathered from sensory input. A high-density Electroencephalograph (EEG) device consisting of 48 electrodes with a spacing of 5 mm was utilized to measure frontal lobe activity in order to capture event-related potentials from visual stimuli. Four randomized stimuli representing different levels of salient responsiveness were measured to determine if mild stimuli c

Perirhinal and hippocampal contributions to visual recognition memory can be distinguished from those of occipito-temporal structures based on conscious awareness of prior occurrence.

The ability of humans to distinguish consciously between new and previously encountered objects can be probed with visual recognition memory tasks that require explicit old-new discriminations. Medial temporal-lobe (MTL) lesions impair performance on such tasks. Within the MTL, both perirhinal cortex and the hippocampus have been implicated. Cognitive processes can also be affected by past object encounters in the absence of conscious recognition, as in repetition priming tasks. Past functional neuroimaging findings in healthy individuals suggest that even in tasks that require conscious recog

Separate visual pathways for perception of actions and objects: evidence from a case of apperceptive agnosia.

Recognition of different kinds of visual stimuli was studied in a patient who acquired apperceptive visual agnosia after a bilateral occipitotemporal lesion which partially spared the primary visual cortex. Impairment in recognising static objects perceived visually sharply contrasts with the relatively well preserved ability to recognise objects from gestures illustrating their use, and to recognise actions shown in line drawings. It is suggested that the occipitoparieto-frontal pathway is involved in the recognition of actions, and in the recognition of objects when sensorimotor experience i

Apperceptive visual agnosia: a case study.

A man with an infarction of his inferior temporal and occipital association cortex bilaterally, which spared primary visual cortex, had impaired visual recognition of objects, faces, colors, words, and gestures. Analysis of visual function indicated that the recognition failures resulted from an agnosia, rather than elemental visual impairment. Whereas his impairment of gesture recognition appeared to be related to an associative agnosia, his inability to recognize objects was related to an apperceptive agnosia. There may be four subtypes of apperceptive agnosia: one where the internal object

Are different affordances subserved by different neural pathways?

This paper questions whether affordances are allied exclusively to dorsal stream processing within the visual system, or whether in fact different affordances are subserved by functionally independent neural pathways. Using case study evidence from patients with various visual pathologies, I argue that affordances can be categorised into type based upon their respective neurological underpinning. Such categorisation has implications for the extent to which affordances are consciously perceived or non-consciously 'picked up' within the optic array, as well as whether they indicate merely potent

Variation in visual acuity within pigmented, and between pigmented and albino rat strains.

Many researchers assume that laboratory rats have poor vision, and accordingly, that they need not consider differences in the visual function of rats as a consequence of strain or experience. Currently, it is not specifically known whether rat domestication has negatively affected the visual function of laboratory rat strains, what the effects of strain albinism are on rat visual function, or whether there are strain differences in the visual function of laboratory rats that are independent of pigmentation. In order to address these questions, we measured psychophysically the vertical grating

Eyes and Ears: Cross-Modal Interference of Tinnitus on Visual Processing.

The visual processing capacity of tinnitus patients is worse than normal controls, indicating cross-modal interference. However, the mechanism underlying the tinnitus-modulated visual processing is largely unclear. In order to explore the influence of tinnitus on visual processing, this study used a signal recognition paradigm to observe whether the tinnitus group would display a significantly longer reaction time in processing the letter symbols (Experiment 1) and emotional faces (Experiment 2) than the control group. Signal detection and signal recognition, which reflect the perceptual and c

Effects of literacy in early visual and occipitotemporal areas of Chinese and French readers.

How does reading expertise change the visual system? Here, we explored whether the visual system could develop dedicated perceptual mechanisms in early and intermediate visual cortex under the pressure for fast processing that is particularly strong in reading. We compared fMRI activations in Chinese participants with limited knowledge of French and in French participants with no knowledge of Chinese, exploiting these doubly dissociated reading skills as a tool to study the neural correlates of visual expertise. All participants viewed the same stimuli: words in both languages and matched visu

Eliciting dyslexic symptoms in proficient readers by simulating deficits in grapheme-to-phoneme conversion and visuo-magnocellular processing.

Among the cognitive causes of dyslexia, phonological and magnocellular deficits have attracted a substantial amount of research. Their role and their exact impact on reading ability are still a matter of debate, partly also because large samples of dyslexics are hard to recruit. Here, we report a new technique to simulate dyslexic symptoms in normal readers in two ways. Although difficulties in grapheme-to-phoneme conversion were elicited by manipulating the identifiability of written letters, visual-magnocellular processing deficits were generated by presenting letters moving dynamically on t
