This case report describes the extraction of 3 mandibular posterior teeth (teeth #19, 20 and 21) with extensive invasive external cervical resorption (ECR) followed by guided double auto-transplantation of immature mandibular third molars (teeth #17 and 32). A 17-year-old male with a history of orthodontic treatment reported with intermittent pain in the mandibular left posterior region. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed extensive tooth tissue loss in teeth #19, 20 and 21 that was diagnosed as class 3 ECR (Patel 3Dp for teeth #20 and 21, 3Bp for tooth #19). Guided double auto-tran

This research introduces Oral Score Basic (OS-B), a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) derived methodology designed to provide a comprehensive, objective assessment of individual teeth and overall oral health, initially focused on dental conditions. Leveraging data from more than 340,000 patients across 2,558 U.S. dental practices, OS-B combines radiographic findings and periodontal probing depths with a treatment probability-weighted cost function to quantify the severity of dental conditions. The OS-B score aims to address limitations in prior oral health scoring systems by incorporating nua

Regenerative endodontics is a rapidly growing field within dentistry that aims to replace damaged tooth structures and cells of the pulp-dentin complex. This case report presents the successful management of an immature permanent second mandibular premolar with an acute apical abscess and extensive apical bone loss caused by a dens evaginatus. This tooth was unexpectedly treated with long-term calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) that was replenished several times over 6 months. During the treatment process, this tooth became reinflamed developing a chronic apical abscess after resolution of the initia

BACKGROUND: Rapid distraction of the periodontal ligament is an effective method to shorten the orthodontic treatment time. The objectives of the present study were to assess the effects of an HYCON device (Adenta GmbH, Germany) on the rate of en masse retraction of the anterior teeth, duration of retraction, anchorage loss, root resorption, and soft tissue changes.
METHODS: This study was conducted on 60 female patients aged >18 years, divided randomly into two equal groups: Group 1 comprised 30 patients with HYCON, and group 2 comprised 30 patients with nickel-titanium closed coil springs.

OBJECTIVE: Oral status is an important indicator of past lifestyles. Determining the presence and extent of oral pathologies helps reconstruct average oral health, paramasticatory activities and diet of ancient and historical populations.
DESIGN: In this study, the dental remains from the early medieval cemetery of Früebergstrasse in Baar (Canton of Zug, Switzerland) and the high medieval Dalheim cemetery (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) were analyzed. Caries, periodontal condition, periapical lesions, antemortem tooth loss, and enamel hypoplasia were assessed in 654 teeth (993 observable lo

Gingival fenestration is a relatively uncommon soft tissue lesion in which the root apex is exposed in the oral environment after the destruction of the overlying buccal bone plate and mucosa. At present, no clear etiology or treatment guidelines exist for gingival fenestration. This article reports three successfully treated cases of gingival fenestration associated with chronic periapical infection and can help contribute to treatment guidelines for gingival fenestration. All cases were treated with apicoectomy in conjunction with a connective tissue graft (CTG), and the first steps of each

BACKGROUND: The term "peripheral fibro-osseous lesion (PFOL)" is used relatively for common gingival lesions characterized histologically by hypercellular connective tissue showing either new bone-like formations or cementum-like substance and rarely dystrophic calcifications. These lesions are closely related to the other fibro-osseous lesions such as cemental periapical dysplasia, fibrous dysplasia, and other calcifying odontogenic cysts and tumors. The etiology is unknown, but certain authors suggest plaque, dental calculus, and ill-fitting dentures which might be the irritating agents caus

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Orthodontic miniscrews have become popular tools for providing temporary anchorage during orthodontic treatment. Although they are easy to insert, damage to the periodontal ligament or dental root during insertion is an unfavorable iatrogenic complication. Root perforation during miniscrew insertion in human teeth has been reported in a few articles. In this article, the authors describe the spontaneous repair of an iatrogenic root perforation in a mandibular first molar that occurred during insertion of an orthodontic miniscrew in a young girl undergoing orthodontic t

RATIONALE: Lymphomas are the second most common non-epithelial malignant tumors in the oral and maxillofacial region. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) develops at extranodal sites, and cases involving the maxilla account for less than 1% of all NHLs. We describe a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in the maxilla, and highlight the clinical signs, symptoms, differential diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of DLBCL in the oral cavity and maxillofacial region.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 67-year-old woman was admitted to our surgical department with pain and swelling in her right upper posterio

Cementum covering the tooth root provides attachment for the tooth proper to the surrounding alveolar bone via non-mineralized periodontal ligament (PDL). Cementum protein 1 (CEMP1) has been shown to induce a cementoblastic phenotype in cementoblast precursors cells of PDL. Oxygen availability is a critical signal for correct development of many tissues; however, its role in tooth root and periodontium development remains poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that reduced oxygen tension increased CEMP1 expression, mineral deposition, and alkaline phosphatase activity in human denta

INTRODUCTION: Revitalization procedures have been widely used for the treatment of immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis. The treatment procedures appear to be capable of encouraging continued root development and thickening of the canal walls. The nature of tissues formed in the canal space and at the root apex after revitalization has been shown histologically in several animal studies; similar studies in humans were recently reported.
METHODS: A 9-year-old boy had a traumatic injury to his upper anterior teeth. Tooth #9 suffered a complicated crown fracture with a pulp exposur

The present clinical study investigated the outcome of intentional replantation using resection of the ankylosed sites of the root, extraoral endodontic treatment using titanium posts and Emdogain for periodontal healing following trauma-related ankylosis. During an evaluation period of 6 years, 16 ankylosed teeth affected by replacement resorption were treated as described. Evaluation parameters before treatment and during the follow-up period included Periotest scores, percussion sound and periapical radiographs. All findings were compared to those of the adjacent teeth. In a second accident

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the gingiva are uncommon. They can be a diagnostic challenge clinically because of their rarity and tendency to mimic benign lesions. In this report, we present a case of an undifferentiated malignant neoplasm of unknown origin presenting as benign inflammatory gingival lesions and we review the literature on metastases to the gingiva.
METHODS: A 44-year-old female patient was referred by a local periodontist for evaluation of multiple painless gingival lesions that clinically resembled pyogenic granulomas or periodontal abscesses, but with an uncharacteristic multif

AIM: A geminated maxillary incisor required complex multidisciplinary treatment to preserve health and restore aesthetics. This report describes the coordination of coronal division, root extraction, bone grafting, endodontic treatment and orthodontics in achieving treatment goals. It is the intention of this report to show how a difficult case could be managed by properly coordinated multidisciplinary care.
SUMMARY: Pulp testing of the geminated central right maxillary incisor gave a normal response. Radiographic investigation indicated a connection of the pulp chambers. Both the mesial and
