Minimally Invasive Surgery/Robotic Surgery in Small Bowel Cancer.

Small bowel tumors are rare malignancies, comprising less than 5% of all gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. The most common subtypes are adenocarcinomas, GI stromal tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, and lymphomas. Workup for these masses includes a combination of endoscopic and high-resolution imaging. Small bowel cancers are generally staged using their depth of invasion, regional lymph node involvement, and distant metastasis. While advances in medical oncology have yielded promising results, surgical resection remains central to treatment of small bowel tumors. With a shift toward minimally invasi

Convergent binocular stereo: Depth perception for humanoid robot vision.

The design of robotic binocular camera systems has been inspired by human vision, as has their use in humanoid robots. One aspect of this inspiration has yet to play a major role, namely, that humans determine depth using a convergent binocular imaging geometry with both eyes pointing at the same location. Although some robot heads have the functionality to use vergence and version movements and thus alter binocular imaging geometry, a method to exploit it for depth computation has not been explored. Even though to an observer, their motions and appearance might resemble that of humans, in det

Improving efficiency in robotic-assisted surgery: a practical guide for surgeons.

The integration of robotic systems into minimally invasive surgery offers significant advantages, including enhanced precision, reduced invasiveness, and improved patient outcomes. However, sustaining these benefits requires optimization of operational efficiency to justify the substantial resource investment associated with robotic technologies. This review examines strategies to enhance efficiency in robotic-assisted surgery using a four-pillar framework: (1) team structure and leadership; (2) organization of care; (3) procedural standardization; and (4) parallel task overlap. Evidence from

A structural causal model for robot-assisted upper-limb neurorehabilitation.

Upper-limb robot-assisted neurorehabilitation in stroke yields modest improvements in impairments that do not generalize to functional outcomes, with substantial variability across patients. In response, there is increasing interest in precision neurorehabilitation through mechanistically driven, tailored robot-assisted therapy for individual patients. Such approaches require models that support interventional reasoning about therapy parameters (e.g., "what if we increase robotic assistance or dose for this patient?"), rather than providing purely associational findings such as biomarkers corr

Bistable Steering Mechanism for Enhanced Control in Soft Toroidal Robots.

Navigating confined and complex environments, such as pipes, biological tissues, and collapsed debris, has remained a challenge for conventional robotic systems, which often struggle with maneuverability and adaptability. Soft toroidal robots offer a promising alternative, with a compact and lightweight toroidal shape that allows continuous movement without requiring bulky external equipment. However, the lack of a steering mechanism has limited their applicability in dynamic and complex terrains. To overcome this, we developed a steering mechanism that leverages the bistable characteristics i

Hand-like autonomous flying robot for airborne grasping and interaction.

Birds' extraordinary aerial agility and environmental interaction enable complex tasks such as mid-air hunting, perching, and nest-building, inspiring the development of advanced aerial robots with similar manipulation capabilities. However, existing platforms often face challenges such as large size, heavy payloads, end-effector torque interference, and limited functionality, severely restricting their practical deployment. Drawing inspiration from the biological, structural, and actuation characteristics of human hands, we propose a hand-like robot that integrates flight and grasping, demons
