Histomorphological and ultrastructural characterization of pancreatic islet intranuclear and intracytoplasmic inclusions in giant southern pouched rats (Cricetomys ansorgei).

Intracellular inclusions are singular structures that may occur secondary to viral infection, cytoplasmic invagination, and organelle entrapment, or due to abnormal accumulation of biological material, such as proteins. Determining the exact nature of an inclusion is crucial in diagnostic pathology, especially in the context of colony management and toxicity studies. In this case series, we identified pancreatic islet intranuclear (IN) and intracytoplasmic (IC) eosinophilic inclusions in 13 out of 21 southern giant pouched rats (Cricetomys ansorgei), a species studied for its outstanding olfac

Impact of Early Postnatal Maternal Separation Stress on Pancreatic Function in Rodents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Early postnatal stress is a critical factor in metabolic programming. Maternal separation (MS) in rodents, a widely validated model, has been linked to pancreatic alterations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of MS on pancreatic morphology and function in rodents. This review followed the PRISMA and SYRCLE guidelines, with a protocol registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251004633). Experimental studies in rodents comparing MS with standard rearing, which reported pancreatic morphofunctional and metabolic parameters, were included. A comprehensive search was perfor

Non-transgenic rodent models of Alzheimer's disease for preclinical research: a review.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. It involves the irreversible destruction of higher brain structures, leading to significant cognitive deficits, personality changes, and aberrant behavior. Key pathological features include the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau protein neurofibrillary tangles, which disrupt cellular communication and neuron function. Chronic inflammation, vascular abnormalities, and genetic factors like the APOE (apolipoprotein E) ε4 allele also

Reanimation of rodents: an animal model for cognitive recovery from anaesthesia.

Outside of the specialty, there is often a simplified perception that anaesthesiology focuses solely on inducing and maintaining an anaesthetised state. However, patients and their families never seek a one-way trip into the abyss of general anaesthesia, a point emphasised by a senior colleague who quipped, 'any fool can put someone to sleep, it's being able to wake them up again that's important'. When emergence goes awry, in the best cases, it manifests as a mere temporal delay to normal wakefulness. However, aberrant emergence can portend underlying neuropathology including emergence and po

Multicentric B-cell lymphoma, phaeochromocytoma and amyloid-rich thyroid carcinoma in a common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus): a case of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2?

Neoplastic diseases are poorly documented in Suidae species. This report describes a 15-year-old female common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) with multicentric lymphoma, phaeochromocytoma and C-cell carcinoma. The animal had multiple episodes of weakness and epistaxis in the months before death, until it was euthanized for acute lethargy and recumbency. Post-mortem examination revealed haemoabdomen originating from enlarged lymph nodes at the mesenteric root. The warthog had generalized lymphadenopathy, consistent with B-cell lymphoma based on CD20 immunohistochemistry. The adrenal glands we

Morphometric and Molecular Insights into Hepatozoon spp. in Wild and Synanthropic Rodents from Southern and Southeastern Brazil.

Small rodents are known hosts of various pathogens, including Hepatozoon, but until now, in Brazil, only Hepatozoon milleri has been described in these animals. In this study, liver samples and blood smears were obtained from 289 rodents belonging to 14 Cricetidae and two Muridae species that had been captured in municipalities of the states of Paraná and Rio de Janeiro. Smears were stained with Giemsa, and gametocytes were detected via microscopy in 10.72% (n = 31/289) of samples, with these individuals representing three rodent species. Significant morphometric differences were observed in g

Seasonal and biological drivers of gastrointestinal parasites in wild rodents from two areas with different anthropogenic pressures in a semi-arid region.

BACKGROUND: Environmental and biological factors can regulate host-parasite interactions. However, in the context of habitat alteration due to human-induced activities, little is known about its effects on parasite infections in wildlife populations. This study focused on the study of 363 wild rodents (Phyllotis darwini Waterhouse 1837) inhabiting two areas with different anthropogenic pressures (i.e., non-altered [protected] and altered [rural] area) in the Coquimbo Region, in Chile, during five consecutive seasons (2021-2022). Coprological examinations were carried out using the Mini-FLOTAC

Assessing the influence of HIV on the spread of Mpox disease.

Mpox, originating primarily in African rodents, has led to human outbreaks over recent years. This study presents a mathematical model for Mpox, distinguishing between individuals with and without HIV who are susceptible. We explore scenarios involving both rodent-to-human transmission and those without it. In the absence of this transmission route, the model undergoes a backward bifurcation, suggesting that reducing the basic reproduction number below one would not eliminate the disease unless further control strategies are used. With the account of rodent-to-human transmission, if Mpox is en

Pathogenicity and virulence of Rodent-Borne Orthohantaviruses.

The Orthohantavirus genus in the family Hantaviridae includes viruses that cause zoonotic diseases in humans known as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Exposure of humans to these viruses occurs through inhalation of aerosols of urine, feces, and saliva of rodents, who are the reservoirs for pathogenic orthohantaviruses. The clinical courses of HFRS and HPS are characterized by initial high fever and body pain with severe HFRS or HPS leading to renal failure, pulmonary failure, or both. The underlying pathogenic mechanism of both diseases inc

Serological Evidence of Lassa Virus Exposure in Non-Mastomys Small Mammals Within a Hyperendemic Region of North-Central Nigeria: A Pilot Study.

Lassa fever (LF), a severe hemorrhagic disease endemic to West Africa, is primarily transmitted by rodents of the genus Mastomys, particularly Mastomys natalensis, which serve as the main reservoirs of Lassa virus (LASV). There have been reports of high prevalence of LF in Nigeria, and outbreaks tend to be recurrent yet geographically restricted, implying that additional ecological or epidemiological factors influence the distribution of the disease beyond the mere presence of M. natalensis. However, national-scale data on LASV prevalence in rodent populations remain scarce. To address this ga

Different environmental factors predict the occurrence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and reveal new potential risk areas across Europe via geospatial models.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the most serious tick-borne viral disease in Europe. Identifying TBE risk areas can be difficult due to hyper focal circulation of the TBE virus (TBEV) between mammals and ticks. To better define TBE hazard risks and elucidate regional-specific environmental factors that drive TBEV circulation, we developed two machine-learning (ML) algorithms to predict the habitat suitability (maximum entropy), and occurrence of TBEV (extreme gradient boosting) within distinct European regions (Central Europe, Nordics, and Baltics) using local variables of climate

Mitigation of lens opacification by a functional food in a diabetic rodent model.

The current study was designed to test a functional food (FF) mixture containing aldose reductase inhibitors and antiglycation bioactive compounds for suppressing the onset and progression of cataracts in a diabetic rat model. Two-month-old Sprague Dawley rats were grouped as control (C), diabetes untreated (D), and diabetic rats treated with FF at two doses (FF1 = 1.35 g and FF2 = 6.25 g/100g of diet). Diabetes was induced by a single injection of streptozotocin. The FF is a mixture of amla, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and fenugreek added to the rodent diet. The status of catara

New Insights into Contradictory Changes in Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in Rodent Models of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that may develop after experiencing traumatic events. Preclinical studies use various methods to induce PTSD-like models such as fear-conditioning, single-prolonged stress (SPS), restraint stress, and social defeat. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a crucial neurotrophin in mood regulation. Evidence shows BDNF changes in different neuropsychiatric disorders particularly PTSD. This review examined BDNF alterations in preclinical rodent models of PTSD where we demonstrated a wide range of paradoxical changes in BDNF.

Luminal Delivery of Pectin-Modified Oxygen Microbubbles Mitigates Rodent Experimental Intestinal Ischemia.

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic gut injury is common in the intensive care unit, impairs gut barrier function, and contributes to multiorgan dysfunction. One novel intervention to mitigate ischemic gut injury is the direct luminal delivery of oxygen microbubbles (OMB). Formulations of OMB can be modified to control the rate of oxygen delivery. This project examined whether luminal delivery of pectin-modified OMB (OMBp5) can reduce ischemic gut injury in a rodent model. METHODS: The OMBp5 formulation was adapted to improve delivery of oxygen along the length of small intestine. Adult Sprague-Dawley rat

Exposure and resistance to anticoagulant rodenticides in invasive and endemic Chadian urban rodent species to develop a rational management strategy.

UNLABELLED: Rodent management involves the use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). This use has resulted in the selection of numerous resistance alleles in the Vkorc1 gene, encoding the target enzyme of ARs. In Africa, although rodents are a major problem as a consequence of their transport and transmission of zoonotic pathogens, and damage to crops, the use of ARs and the spread of resistance alleles are poorly documented. We attempted to address both issues in Chad which is one of the largest countries in Africa. Owing to its location at the crossroads of central and northern Africa, Chad i

Circadian regulation of liver metabolism: experimental approaches in human, rodent, and cellular models.

Circadian rhythms are endogenous oscillations with approximately a 24-h period that allow organisms to anticipate the change between day and night. Disruptions that desynchronize or misalign circadian rhythms are associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease. This review focuses on the liver circadian clock as relevant to the risk of developing metabolic diseases including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Many liver functions exhibit rhythmicity. Approximately 40% of the hepatic transcriptome exhibits 24-h rhythms, along wi

Hypothalamic GnRH expression and pulsatility depends on a balance of prolactin receptors in the plains vizcacha, Lagostomus maximus.

In mammals, gestation is considered a physiological hyperprolactinemia status. Prolactin (PRL) is one of the modulators of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons function. The South American plains vizcacha (Lagostomus maximus) is a unique model to study the regulation of hypothalamic GnRH neurons by direct and indirect steroid-dependent pathways. The aim was to characterize the hypothalamic expression of endocrine markers in vizcacha during gestation as well as their response to experimental induced hyperprolactinemia. The possible involvement of PRL regulatory pathways on GnRH in the

Transcriptional vulnerabilities of striatal neurons in human and rodent models of Huntington's disease.

Striatal projection neurons (SPNs), which progressively degenerate in human patients with Huntington's disease (HD), are classified along two axes: the canonical direct-indirect pathway division and the striosome-matrix compartmentation. It is well established that the indirect-pathway SPNs are susceptible to neurodegeneration and transcriptomic disturbances, but less is known about how the striosome-matrix axis is compromised in HD in relation to the canonical axis. Here we show, using single-nucleus RNA-sequencing data from male Grade 1 HD patient post-mortem brain samples and male zQ175 and

Brain-implanted conductors amplify radiofrequency fields in rodents: Advantages and risks.

Over the past few decades, daily exposure to radiofrequency (RF) fields has been increasing due to the rapid development of wireless and medical imaging technologies. Under extreme circumstances, exposure to very strong RF energy can lead to heating of body tissue, even resulting in tissue injury. The presence of implanted devices, moreover, can amplify RF effects on surrounding tissue. Therefore, it is important to understand the interactions of RF fields with tissue in the presence of implants, in order to establish appropriate wireless safety protocols, and also to extend the benefits of me
