Interactions between risky decisions, impulsiveness and smoking in young tattooed women.

BACKGROUND: According to previous studies, one of the common problems of everyday life of persons with tattoos is risky behavior. However, direct examination of the decision making process, as well as factors which determine women's risk-taking decisions to get tattoos, have not been conducted. This study investigates whether risk taking decision-making is associated with the self-assessment impulsiveness in tattooed women. METHODS: Young women (aged 18-35 years) with (N = 60) and without (N = 60) tattoos, performed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), as a measure of decision-making processes, as w

Self-assessment of oral malodor 1 year following initial consultation.

OBJECTIVE: In an initial study, subjects complaining of bad breath were generally unable to score the level of their own oral malodor in an objective fashion. Subjects were taught several techniques for self-measurement of bad breath. One year following the initial consultation, subjects were recalled to determine whether their ability to assess their own oral malodor had improved. METHOD AND MATERIALS: In the study, subjects were blinded to their own scores 1 year earlier, to the odor-judge scores, and to the results of the clinical laboratory tests. Thirty-two of 43 subjects in the original

Effectiveness of a Stoma Self-Care Mobile App in Enhancing Patients' Ostomy Self-Care Ability: A Development and Usability Study.

Patients with colorectal cancer or severe abdominal trauma often require a stoma and must master the self-care necessary to prevent peristomal skin complications. In this study, we developed and evaluated a mobile health (mHealth) app, called The Stoma Self-Care App, to facilitate self-care knowledge and skill acquisition alongside clinical monitoring in patients with ostomy. The app was developed following the 6 stages of the System Development Life Cycle: planning, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance. To evaluate usability, the app was tested in 23 patients over 4 weeks

Prediction of Self-Association and Solution Behavior of Monoclonal Antibodies Using the QCM-D Metric of Loosely Interacting Layer.

Despite the increasing availability and success of monoclonal antibodies (mAb), early identification of candidate molecules with desirable developability attributes remains challenging due to self-association and poor solution behavior. Measuring these phenomena experimentally using the available methods is complicated in mAbs development. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) detects a loosely interacting layer on top of the irreversibly adsorbed layer of molecules, providing information about the mAbs interaction. This work aimed to explore whether the characteristi

Self-disgust and disgust sensitivity are increased in anorexia nervosa inpatients, but only self-disgust mediates between comorbid and core psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: The possible role of abnormal disgust processing in the development and course of anorexia nervosa (AN) has been emphasized in theoretical models and research. However, disgust toward external stimuli and self-disgust have not yet been investigated together in a clinical sample of AN patients. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to measure these constructs and examine their role in shaping eating pathology in AN patients and healthy controls (HCs), considering comorbid depressive and anxiety psychopathology. The study also aimed at testing the possible mediational roles of both

Male imprisoned firesetters have different characteristics than other imprisoned offenders and require specialist treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether a group of firesetters (n = 68) could be distinguished, psychologically, from a matched group of non-firesetting offenders (n = 68). METHOD: Participants completed measures examining psychological variables relating to fire, emotional/self-regulation, social competency, self-concept, boredom proneness, and impression management. Official prison records were also examined to record offending history and other offense-related variables. A series of MANOVAs were conducted with conceptually related measures identified as the dependent variables. Follow-u

A body-related dot-probe task reveals distinct attentional patterns for bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa.

We investigated body-related attentional biases in eating disorders by testing whether individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN, n = 19) and bulimia nervosa (BN, n = 18) differ from healthy controls (HC, n = 21) in their bias for attending to a photo of their own body (self-photo) relative to a photo of a matched control participant's body (other photo). In a modified dot-probe task, self- and other photos served as cues on the left and the right of the screen. After 1 of 2 time intervals, 1 of the photos was singled out by a surrounding frame, and participants had to saccade toward it. Saccade l

Further Evidence of Psychometric Performance of the Self-care of Diabetes Inventory in Adults With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The Self-care of Diabetes Inventory (SCODI) is a theory-based tool that measures self-care, a key strategy in the appropriate treatment of diabetes. However, despite the clinical differences between people with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), the psychometric properties of the SCODI were only tested in mixed samples. PURPOSE: This study aims to test the psychometric performances of the SCODI in two separate groups of adults with T1DM and T2DM. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis from two previous multicentre cross-sectional observational stu

Indirect effect of impulsivity on suicide risk through self-esteem and depressive symptoms in a population with treatment-resistant depression: A FACE-DR study.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a major health issue. Its prevalence is particularly high in subjects presenting major depression disorder (MDD), making this a key suicide-related risk factor. Suicide attempts in severe forms of MDD were assumed to be linked to impulsivity and loss of control. Nevertheless, we failed to find data specifically investigating the link between impulsivity and suicide risk in treatment-resistant depression (TRD). This study seeks to review this relationship. METHOD: Patients were recruited for a prospective cohort. Suicide risk and impulsivity were assessed using the Int

Performance on Cognitive Screening Tests and Long-Term Substance Use Outcomes in Patients with Polysubstance Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairments among patients with substance use disorders are prevalent and associated with adverse treatment outcomes. However, knowledge of the predictive value of broad cognitive screening instruments on long-term treatment outcomes is limited. The present study aimed to examine the predictive value of measures from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment® (MoCA®), Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI), and the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function - Adult version (BRIEF-A) on self-reported long-term substance use and abstinence in patients with polysu

Self-reported subjective cognitive decline is associated with global cognition in a community sample of Latinos/as/x living in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Although subjective cognitive decline (SCD) may be an early risk marker of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), research on SCD among Hispanics/Latinos/as/x (henceforth Latinos/as) living in the U.S. is lacking. We investigated if the cross-sectional relationship of self-reported SCD with objective cognition varies as a function of ethnic background (Latinos/as versus Non-Hispanic Whites [NHWs]). Secondary analyses conducted solely within the Latino/a group investigated if informant reported SCD is associated with objective cognition and whether self-reported SCD is related to markers of br

Over-reports of recent alcohol consumption in a clinical population: a validity study.

Decisions concerning appropriate treatment in alcoholism programs are often based on the self-reports of the clients. However, few programs have incorporated validation procedures (such as breath tests) since it is generally assumed that alcoholics will deny the extent of their drinking and their subsequent alcohol problems. The self-reports of recent alcohol consumption of sixty-five new entrants to an alcoholism treatment program were validated with breath tests. Five estimates of blood alcohol concentrations were derived by varying elimination rates. For all five estimates, over-reporters c

Antimicrobial resistance in campylobacter: susceptibility testing methods and resistance trends.

Most Campylobacter infections are self-limiting but antimicrobial treatment (e.g., macrolides, fluoroquinolones) is necessary in severe or prolonged cases. Susceptibility testing continues to play a critical role in guiding therapy and epidemiological monitoring of resistance. The methods of choice for Campylobacter recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) are agar dilution and broth microdilution, while a disk diffusion method was recently standardized by the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). Macrolides, quinolones, and tetracycl
