Studies were carried out on the etiology of the helminth infections at three industrial sheep complexes typical of this country. A record was made of the prevalence of Cysticercus ovis in sheep and lambs killed at Albany, Waroona and Geraldton from 1970 until 1973. Detailed dissection of 292 carcases which had passed routine inspection revealed C. ovis in 60 (20.5%). Each of two Desert Sheep was infected with 1500 cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni of Northern Sudan. Signs of infection were anorexia, soft faces, progressive weakness and loss of wool. In the course of a study initiated to elucidate the role of known abortifacient in ruminants in Southern Africa, Coxiella burnetti was identified in smears prepared from bovine and ovine placental tissues obtained from 12 farms. The organism was also isolated in embryonated eggs, and specific antibodies were demonstrated in sera of animals originating from these farms. In 7 of the 12 herds in which Q fever was diagnosed, other pathogens were identified concomitantly.

Efficacy of diamphenethide ("Coriban", Burroughs Wellcome) and rafoxanide ("Ranide", Merck Sharpe & Dohme, Ltd.) was evaluated in lambs against 8-week old experimentally induced Fasciola gigantica infection. Results were assessed by the reduction in worm counts at post-mortem examination 8 weeks after treatment. Diamphenethide at a dosage rate of 100 mg/kg body weight was found 99.4 per cent effective.
