When the present visits the past: updating traumatic memories in social phobia.

Research suggests that distorted images of the self are common in social phobia and play a role in maintaining the disorder. The images are often linked in thematic and sensory detail to distressing memories that are clustered around the onset or worsening of the disorder. This has led to speculation about the likely benefit of working directly with these memories to improve symptoms of social phobia. In this exploratory study, we describe a process of cognitive restructuring followed by imagery rescripting to update the meanings of distressing memories and images in social phobia. We first pr

When Social Hierarchy, Power, and Collective Autonomy Motivate Social Movement and Counter-Movement Mobilization Among Disadvantaged and Advantaged Groups.

What happens when disadvantaged group members try to gain power in an attempt to protect their collective autonomy? The present integrative review outlines dynamic social processes and conditions under which efforts to restrict a group's collective autonomy motivate social movement mobilization among disadvantaged groups to challenge social hierarchies that limit their power. This, in turn, threatens advantaged groups' perceptions of their access to power and, by extension, their sense of collective autonomy, motivating them to reaffirm the existing social hierarchy by mobilizing counter-movem

Examining the longitudinal associations between activity limitations, instrumental supports and social participation in osteoarthritis: A CLSA population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: In osteoarthritis (OA) research, disability is largely studied within the context of activities of daily living. Broader consequences for social participation are often overlooked. In prior work, instrumental supports received and their perceived availability were shown to play a role in the maintenance of social participation. Two indicators of social participation were identified, diversity and intensity. The current study extends the findings from this prior cross-sectional work by examining these relationships longitudinally. METHODS: Data are from the baseline and 3-year follo

Impact of social media use on influenza vaccine hesitancy among pediatric healthcare workers: The mediating role of 3Cs.

Evidence on the association between social media use and vaccine hesitancy has been inconsistent, and research on the mechanisms underlying this relationship remains limited. This study aimed to examine whether confidence, complacency, and convenience (3Cs) mediate the association between social media use and influenza vaccine hesitancy. An online questionnaire survey was conducted among 464 pediatric healthcare workers in a tertiary hospital in December 2024. The questionnaire assessed social media use (including trust and exposure), vaccine hesitancy, and the 3Cs. Reliability and validity we

Childhood trauma and real-world social experiences in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma is associated with a variety of negative outcomes in psychosis, but it is unclear clear if childhood trauma affects day-to-day social experiences. We aimed to examine the association between childhood trauma and functional and structural characteristics of real-world social relationships in psychosis. METHODS: Participants with psychotic disorders or affective disorders with psychosis completed ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) over ten days (N = 209). Childhood trauma was assessed retrospectively using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Associations betwee

A multidimensional perspective of the relation between social isolation and depression among Portuguese older adults.

We aimed to explore how different social isolation components were associated with depression among older adults in Portugal. We analysed data collected through structured questionnaires in 2017 from 643 Portuguese adults aged 60 and over. Depression was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (Short-Form). Social isolation was operationalised using objective indicators - living alone, marital status, leisure activities - and subjective indicator - perceived social support. Because social isolation is a multidimensional construct that is likely to be more than the sum of its components,

"Why can't they put us to sleep if we are suffering?": La Nada and the desire for euthanasia among institutionalized older adults in Peru.

In this article, I examine how institutionalized older adults in Peru articulate suffering through the idiom of la nada-"nothingness"-and how this shapes desires for euthanasia. Moving from close ethnography of bodies in space and time to structural and ethical discourses on euthanasia, I argue that calls for euthanasia arise not only from biomedical suffering or terminal illness, but also from socially produced experiences of relational erosion, confinement, and moral invisibility. Residents' refrain-"no tengo nada"-signals not only material lack but the collapse of reciprocal ties, autonomy,

Barriers to the Management of Classic Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Due to 21-Hydroxylase Deficiency.

Classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency is a rare genetic condition that requires lifelong management from birth. Individuals with CAH and their families often face structural barriers to obtaining comprehensive care and treatment, including limited access to appropriate newborn screening, comprehensive care centers, and medications. Social and cultural barriers to care may include stigmatization, discrimination, and adverse medical experiences. At the individual and family level, comprehensive care may be affected by education, finances, health-care cover

Some challenges in using multilayer networks to bridge brain and mind.

The application of techniques from network science to create single-layer networks of the brain and mind has resulted in significant advances in the neuro- (i.e., structural and functional brain networks) and cognitive sciences (i.e., cognitive network science). Recent advances in network science on multilayer networks increase the possibility that a "network of networks" might finally connect the physical brain to the intangible mind, much like physical fibre optic cables and wires connect to other layers of the internet to allow intangible social networks to form in various social media plat

Investigation of pyrazolo-sulfonamides as putative small molecule oxytocin receptor agonists.

The neuropeptide oxytocin has been implicated in multiple central nervous system functions in mammalian species. Increased levels have been reported to improve trust, alleviate symptoms related to autism and social phobias, and reduce social anxiety. Hoffman-La Roche published a patent claiming to have found potent small molecule oxytocin receptor agonists, smaller than the first non-peptide oxytocin agonist reported, WAY 267,464. We selected two of the more potent compounds from the patent and, in addition, created WAY 267,464 hybrid structures and determined their oxytocin and vasopressin re

Embedded-explicit emergent literacy intervention I: Background and description of approach.

This article, the first of a two-part series, provides background information and a general description of an emergent literacy intervention model for at-risk preschoolers and kindergartners. The embedded-explicit intervention model emphasizes the dual importance of providing young children with socially embedded opportunities for meaningful, naturalistic literacy experiences throughout the day, in addition to regular structured therapeutic interactions that explicitly target critical emergent literacy goals. The role of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) in the embedded-explicit model enco

Positive Aging Attitudes and Social Adaptation Among Chinese Older Adults: Sequential Roles of Social Support and Life Satisfaction.

Successful aging involves not only health maintenance but also continued social functioning and adaptation. Global demographic aging requires a better understanding of the psychosocial pathways through which older adults achieve successful adaptation, especially within culturally specific contexts. Positive aging attitudes are consistently associated with enhanced adaptation outcomes across diverse populations, yet the pathways through which these cognitive-emotional orientations relate to behavioral adaptation remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study used latent-variable structural eq

Understanding social inclusion: A directed content analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social inclusion can be defined as a process that enhances opportunities for social participation, strengthens social bonds, and ensures equitable access to opportunities and decision-making. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of society and the active roles individuals play in upholding shared values and responsibilities. This study aimed to explore factors contributing to social inclusion from the perspective of families in Kingston, Ontario who self-identified as having a history of adversity and as being resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Participants consisted

Perceptions of adolescent pregnancy in the rural context and the Colombian armed conflict: a qualitative approach based on social determination of health.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancy in rural areas is a persistent health problem that has still not properly been understood. Studies with qualitative perspectives that address this phenomenon as a complex social process, which involves the recognition of the voices of the actors involved and the analysis of the specific context in which it takes place, are limited. OBJECTIVE: This research explored the perceptions of young people and other social actors (municipalities of Palmira and El Cerrito in Colombia) of the social forces and dimensions of the social determination of adolescent pregnancy

State-level structural sexism and cesarean sections in the United States.

The United States (U.S.) has one of the highest cesarean rates in the world yet little research considers structural factors, like racism and sexism, associated with the higher than recommended cesarean rate. New research operationalizes and quantifies structural sexism across U.S. states, which allows for consideration of how social norms and values around women and their bodies relate to the overmedicalization of birth through cesarean sections. We obtained restricted natality data for 2018 from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. In 2018, among people 15-49 years, 987,187 births

From crisis to commitment: nursing students' sense of belonging during and immediately after the covid-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, global health systems continue to face strain. Understanding how crises shape professional development is vital for strengthening nursing education and sustaining the workforce. This study explored how nursing students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia maintained their sense of belonging to the nursing profession after the pandemic and how these experiences affected their career decisions. METHODS: An exploratory, descriptive, and qualitative design was adopted using semi-structured interviews. Using purposive sampling, eight undergraduate and postgra

Financial Burden in Dental Care: Global Determinants, Policy Interventions and Access Inequities-A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Access to dental care is often limited by financial, structural and social factors, contributing to persistent oral health inequalities globally. This scoping review systematically maps and synthesizes how financial pressures influence access, service utilization and oral health outcomes, particularly among underserved and vulnerable populations. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, 73 peer-reviewed studies published between 2004 and 2024 were included. The included studies spanned high-income countries (the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Australia) and low- and middle-in

Multimodal imaging reveals resilient memory networks in carriers of pathogenic ARID1B variants.

The phenotypic spectrum associated with pathogenic ARID1B variants is remarkably broad, ranging from classic Coffin-Siris syndrome to non-syndromic intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorders. While speech delay, motor impairments and learning difficulties are well documented, brain imaging investigations remain scarce in this population. We combined multimodal neuroimaging and neuropsychological assessments in 12 patients carrying pathogenic ARID1B variants (age = 13.8 ± 4.7 years) and 34 age-matched healthy controls. Whole-brain voxel-wise analyses included arterial spin labelling

Community notes reduce engagement with and diffusion of false information online.

Social networks scaffold the diffusion of information on social media. Much attention has been given to the spread of true vs. false content on online social platforms, including the structural differences between their diffusion patterns. However, much less is known about how platform interventions on false content alter the engagement with and diffusion of such content. In this work, we estimate the causal effects of Community Notes, a novel fact-checking feature adopted by X (formerly Twitter) to solicit and vet crowd-sourced fact-checking notes for false content. We gather detailed time se
