Oral Rehabilitation with Removable Partial Denture of a Patient with Cleidocranial Dysplasia.

This case report describes the oral rehabilitation of a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia who received a removable partial denture along with silicone-based permanent soft liner to improve esthetic and masticatory function. This patient was the candidate of neither implant nor orthodontic treatment due to medical conditions, history of mandible fracture, age, and risk of fracture after mandibular teeth extractions. Cone-beam computed tomography has made it possible to obtain comprehensive information regarding the morphology and positional relationship of impacted supernumerary teeth. Also,

Atypical carcinoid tumor of the lung: A rare entity.

Carcinoids account for approximately 2% of all lung tumors, and the atypical carcinoids (ACs) are much rarer than typical carcinoid. Here, we report a rare case of AC tumor of the lung. A 50-year-old female patient presented with left-sided chest pain for 1 year, cough for 6 months, and loss of appetite for 6 months. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the thorax revealed an ill-defined heterogeneously enhancing soft-tissue attenuation lesion in the mediastinum following which transthoracic biopsy was done. Histomorphology and immunohistochemistry were consistent with AC, a neuroendo

Peritoneal Lymphomatosis Masquerading as Pyoperitoneum in a Teenage Boy.

A 16-year-old boy presented with 1 month of fever, abdominal pain, and distension. The ascitic tap drained pus-like fluid, and ultrasonography showed diffuse thickening of the omentum and mesentery with echogenic ascites. A diagnosis of pyoperitoneum due to peritoneal tuberculosis with secondary infection was suspected, and antitubercular therapy was started elsewhere, but there was no improvement. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed enhancing soft-tissue thickening in the retroperitoneum, extending into the mesentery and encasing the superior and inferior mesenteric vessels. The ascit

A Fatal Case of Super-super Obesity (BMI >80) in a Patient with a Necrotic Soft Tissue Infection.

A 35-year-old man (height, 169 cm; body weight, 240 kg; BMI, 84) visited the Department of Dermatology due to left leg pain and swelling. Focused enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the left leg ruled out complications of deep venous thrombosis. Surgical exploration of the left leg resulted in a diagnosis of necrotic soft tissue infection, but amputation was ruled out due to his weight. The patient ultimately died of multiple organ failure on the fourth day of hospitalization. A culture of the surgical material revealed Streptococcus dysgalactiae. The present case suggests that super-obese pa

X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT): an emerging opportunity in parasite imaging.

X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) is a technique which can obtain three-dimensional images of a sample, including its internal structure, without the need for destructive sectioning. Here, we review the capability of the technique and examine its potential to provide novel insights into the lifestyles of parasites embedded within host tissue. The current capabilities and limitations of the technology in producing contrast in soft tissues are discussed, as well as the potential solutions for parasitologists looking to apply this technique. We present example images of the mouse whipworm Tri

Demonstration of synchrotron x-ray phase contrast imaging computed tomography of infiltrative transitional cell carcinoma of the prostatic urethra in a dog.

Prostatic urethral transitional cell carcinoma with prostatic invasion in a dog was imaged with abdominal radiography and abdominal ultrasonography antemortem. Synchrotron in-line x-ray phase contrast imaging computed tomography (XPCI-CT) was performed on the prostate ex vivo at the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron and compared to histology. XPCI-CT imaging provides greater soft tissue contrast than conventional absorption-based x-ray imaging modalities, permitting visualization of regions of inflammatory cell infiltration, differentiation of invasive versus noninvasive tumor regions, and are

Cerebral Air Embolism: A Clinical, Radiologic and Histopathologic Correlation.

Cerebral air embolism is a recognized life-threatening complication, sometimes iatrogenic. Its timely diagnosis is essential because it can result in neurologic deficits or death. We report a case of a 58-year-old man who died from cerebral air embolism diagnosed by nonenhanced computed tomography scan of the head after a cardiac bypass surgery with Biventricular Assist Device and multiple vascular line placements. Autopsy revealed extensive subcutaneous emphysema, intravascular and perivascular air bubbles in the central nervous system and associated cerebral and cerebellar hemorrhagic infarc

Two patients with TAFRO syndrome exhibiting strikingly similar anterior mediastinal lesions with predominantly fat attenuation on chest computed tomography.

We herein report on two middle-aged men with TAFRO (thrombocytopenia, anasarca, fever, reticulin fibrosis or renal failure, and organomegaly) syndrome, a unique clinicopathological variant of multicentric Castleman׳s disease recently proposed in Japan. Strikingly similar anterior mediastinal fat swellings with soft tissue density were observed in the patients on chest computed tomography. In TAFRO syndrome, bilateral pleural effusion and slight lymph node swelling are common in the thoracic region; however, anterior mediastinal lesions have not been previously observed. Although the mechanisms

Haberland syndrome or Fishman syndrome also known as encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL) is a rare, congenital neurocutaneous disorder. It is characterized by unilateral involvement of skin, eyes and central nervous system. We report the case of a 28-year-old woman who presented with soft lipomatous swelling over right temporal area with nonscarring alopecia of part of frontal and parietal region. The patient had a history of seizures and ipsilateral scleral dermoid. Computed tomography scan findings were suggestive of lipomas and calcification of falx. Magnetic resonance imaging showe

Primary malignant melanoma of the pleura with rapid progression: A case report and literature review.

A primary melanocytic lesion arising from the pleura is a rare occurrence. This is the case report of a 36-year-old female patient with a primary pleural melanocytic tumor. The positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan revealed multiple nodular soft tissue thickenings of the left hemipleura and a large amount of pleural effusion in the left hemithorax. The results of the histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of melanoma. The disease progressed 4 months following immunotherapy and chemotherapy and the patient succumbed to the disease 2 months later. This type of tumor app

RADIOLOGY OF THE MONTH: Vocal Cord Dysfunction with Multiple Cranial Neuropathies.

A 67-year-old female presented to our institution with a progressive history of hoarseness for the past six months. The patient also referred shoulder weakness and cough during the same period of time. She denied weight loss and tobacco use. Past medical history was negative for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region. Physical examination demonstrated asymmetry of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. Flexible laryngoscopy was performed and revealed complete unilateral vocal cord paralysis on the right. Magnetic Resonance (MR) of the brain with intravenous contrast (Figur

Primary penile adenocarcinoma with concurrent hypercalcaemia of malignancy in a dog.

A 13-year-old male neutered Siberian husky crossbreed dog was presented with a 3-week history of haematuria and penile swelling. Clinical examination and computed tomography demonstrated a soft-tissue mass located at the base of the penis without signs of other primary tumours or metastasis. Clinicopathological findings revealed paraneoplastic hypercalcaemia. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of the mass suggested an epithelial tumour with several criteria of malignancy present. Following surgical excision of the mass, the hypercalcaemia resolved. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry revealed

Retroperitoneal malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor replacing an absent kidney in a child.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are nonrhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas with rare occurrence in children specially in the retroperitoneum. We describe a young child who presented with an abdominal mass. Both ultrasound and computed tomography revealed a large right-sided abdominal mass in the anatomic place of right kidney, while no kidney or ureter was observed at that side. He underwent surgical resection of the tumor with a primary impression of Wilms tumor. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of retroperitoneal malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor an

SPECT/CT imaging of patella metastasis from a squamous carcinoma of the lung.

A 71-year-old man presented with a progressive right knee pain which persisted for 6 months and was not relieved by pain medications. He had a history of lung squamous carcinoma 1 year ago. X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed hyperostosis, degenerative changes, and occupancy lesions of the right patella. The patient underwent Tc methylene diphosphonate (Tc-MDP) bone scan and single photon emission tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT), which showed abnormal metabolism of the right patella with bone destruction and soft tissue swelling. Finally, patellectomy was taken and pa

Immunopathological analysis of Erdheim-Chester disease with massive ascites.

We treated a 77-year-old woman with pleural and pericardial effusion and ascites. Initially, collagen vascular disease was suspected due to the presence of anti-centromere antibodies and suspected complication of pulmonary arterial hypertension. However, soft-tissue abnormalities surrounding the bilateral kidneys detected on computed tomography (CT) and symmetrical lesions of the long bones detected on bone scintigraphy made us consider a diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), which is a rare form of histiocytosis. We immunochemically analyzed the cells derived from the ascites in detail

Churg-Strauss syndrome complicated by chronic periaortitis: a case report and review of the literature.

We present a case of Churg-Strauss syndrome complicated by chronic periaortitis. A 68-year-old man presented with wheezing, dyspnea, purpurae, and numbness of the extremities. Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies were absent; however, eosinophilia, a pulmonary infiltrative shadow on chest X-ray, eosinophilic vasculitis on histologic examination of skin and kidney, and mononeuritis multiplex were detected. Churg-Strauss syndrome was diagnosed. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography revealed a periaortic soft tissue mass extending from the subphrenic abdominal aorta to the proximal are

A case of adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma presenting as severe tracheal stenosis.

A 57-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for further examination of a tracheal stenosis shown on computed tomography findings. Bronchoscopy revealed multiple protruding tumors in the lumen of the trachea. Cytological findings of the cell block material from pleural effusion indicated that the T-cell lymphoma was composed of pleomorphic lymphoid cells. Serum human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 antibody was positive and supported the clinical diagnosis of ATLL. Systemic chemotherapy induced the remarkable improvement of the lesions, the infiltrative lung shadow and the soft tissue neoplas

[Radiological procedures in the traumatised wrist].

Injuries of the wrist are difficult to diagnose because of the complex and narrow anatomic structures. On the basis of precise clinical examination, X-rays, CT and MRI are valuable additional tools that can be used. In the case of bone injury, spiral computer tomography with multiplanar reformatting is currently the method of choice. MRI is indicated for the identification of soft tissue or ligamentous injury and avital fragments or necrosis. Other diagnostic tools for the wrist are currently of minor importance. Technical and methodological innovations allow ever better visualisation and clas

Extensive sphenoethmoid mucocele--an endoscopic management.

Sphenoethmoidal mucoceles are rare tumors. They gradually expand in size and rarely produce bony destruction of sinus walls, leading to orbital, ocular, and intracranial involvement. We present a rare case of sphenoethmoidal mucocele with bone destruction and intracranial extension, who presented with nasal blockade and loss of visual acuity. Computed tomographic scan revealed a soft tissue mass, eroding the base of anterior cranial fossa, extending intracranially into the parasellar temporal fossa. The patient was treated successfully by endoscopic excision. Although a transfacial approach is

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura: apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value and ADC map to predict malignant transformation.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) of the pleura are rare soft-tissue tumors that are presumed to be of mesenchymal origin. Most SFTs are histologically benign, but up to 20% of SFTs may be malignant. In addition, malignant transformation may occur within histologically benign SFTs, though it is rare. However, it is difficult to diagnose malignant SFTs of the pleura by means of conventional computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this article we present the first case of malignant SFT of the pleura in an 81-year-old man in which the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value a
