Femoral medullary infarction prevalence with the Zurich Cementless Canine Total Hip arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To document the prevalence of femoral medullary infarction associated with the Zurich Cementless Total Hip Replacement (ZCTHR) system in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: Dogs (n=35) with 41 ZCTHR implants. METHODS: Medical records (February 1999-December 2002) were reviewed for dogs that had ZCTHR and at least 1 year follow-up with radiographic evaluation. Thirty-five dogs (41 ZCTHR) met the inclusion criteria. Femoral morphologic data, implant to bone relationships, and medullary infarcts were recorded. Data were analyzed for associations between infarct occurrence and

OBJECTIVE: To report technique, surgical time, complication rate, and postoperative activity in dogs undergoing 2 intracorporeally-sutured total laparoscopic gastropexy (TLG) techniques compared with a laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy (LAG) technique. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial. ANIMALS: Dogs (n=30) weighing >25 kg. METHODS: Dogs were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups. Two TLG techniques were performed using a median 3 portal technique. One of 2 suturing techniques was used to approximate corresponding incisions made in the stomach and body wall; using intracorporeal hand-sutu

OBJECTIVE: To (1) report a technique for repair of feline ilial fractures using a dorsally applied bone plate and (2) compare outcome with cats treated by a lateral plate. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: Cats (n=10) with iliac fractures. METHODS: Cats with ilial fractures (January 2005-December 2006) were treated by application of a dorsally applied bone plate. Immediate postoperative radiographs were compared with those taken 4-6 weeks later to assess screw loosening, screw purchase, and pelvic canal narrowing. Owners were contacted for medium-term (>3 month) follow-up. Data were

Validation of a rapid parathyroid hormone assay and intraoperative measurement of parathyroid hormone in dogs with benign naturally occurring primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVES: To (1) validate a rapid chemiluminescent parathyroid hormone (PTH) assay, (2) determine it's usefulness locating a parathyroid nodule(s), and (3) determine if >50% decrease in PTH corresponds with excision of autonomously functioning parathyroid tissue. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n=12) with naturally occurring primary hyperparathyroidism and 25 healthy dogs. METHODS: The assay was validated with linearity, precision, and intermethod comparison. Preoperative and postoperative systemic plasma PTH concentrations, measured from saphenous venous blood, wer

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical outcome of left partial arytenoidectomy by video-assisted laser diode photoablation as a surgical treatment for canine laryngeal paralysis (LP). STUDY DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: Dogs with bilateral LP (n=20). METHODS: After endoscopic diagnosis of bilateral LP, left partial arytenoidectomy was performed by photoablation of arytenoid cartilage tissue using a diode laser (600 microm diameter, 15 W power, 980 nm wave length) to increase the width of the rima glottidis. Outcome was evaluated endoscopically (1 and 6 months) and clinically (1, 6, and 12 mon

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the fatigue life of partially stacked and fully stacked (1.5/2.0 and 2.0/2.7 mm) veterinary cuttable plates (VCP) in a fracture gap model of the distal aspect of the radius. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biomechanical study. METHODS: Constructs (n=4/group) were assembled for each of 8 groups using 8-hole plates (1.5/2.0 and 2.0/2.7 mm VCP) in the following configurations: unstacked; 2-hole stacked centered over the gap (COG); 4-hole stacked COG; and fully stacked. Plate(s) were secured to 2 separate polyvinylchloride pipe lengths, mounted to a mechanical testing system with a

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical value of a novel osteoarthritis (OA) biomarker in detecting canine cruciate disease. STUDY DESIGN: Cross sectional clinical study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n=22) with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture and 12 control dogs. METHODS: Concentrations of collagenase-generated cleavage epitope of type II collagen (Col2-3/4C(long mono), or C2C) in serum, urine, and joint fluid were compared between a group of dogs with CCL rupture and a control group. Correlation of C2C concentrations to the clinical stage of stifle OA was also evaluated. RESULTS: There were no sig

OBJECTIVE: To longitudinally characterize the radiographic appearance of un-united medial epicondyle (UME) of the humerus, evaluate UME association with osteoarthritis (OA) and consider its relevance to the elbow dysplasia complex. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study. ANIMALS: Labrador retrievers (n=48) from 7 litters. METHODS: Forty-eight same-sex littermates were paired for this lifetime feeding study. One of each pair was control-fed; the pair mate was fed 25% less than the control each day. Elbows of 46 surviving dogs were radiographed at ages 6 and 8 years, and/or at end-of-life (E

OBJECTIVE: To examine 2 rostral maxillary sinus (RMS) trephine sites for safety and efficacy using skulls of horses of varying age. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study. ANIMALS: Cadaveric equine skulls (n=40). METHODS: Two RMS trephination sites (rostral, caudal) were made in each skull. Radiographic projections using markers at each site were used to determine if sites were within the RMS and directly overlying a cheek tooth. Sinusotomy in 14 skulls was used to determine correlation between radiographic and anatomic location of trephine sites, and of the rostrolateral aspect of the maxillary s
