Dermatosis neglecta (DN) is a frequently underrecognized skin disorder that occurs due to unconscious or conscious neglect of self-cleaning, causing the accumulation of keratin, sweat, sebum, and impurities. It is characterized by asymptomatic yellowish-to-brownish, waxy, adherent papules or plaques with cornflake-like scales that mimic several dermatological conditions. DN awareness is crucial for avoiding unnecessary invasive diagnostic procedures. Its lesions can be removed with some difficulty by ordinary cleansing and efficiently cleared with ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. Individuals with u

Chylothorax refers to the presence of chyle in the paraaortic space. This entity most commonly occurs from injury to the thoracic duct, which carries chyle from the gastrointestinal tract to the bloodstream. Common etiologies around traumatic chylothorax include iatrogenic causes, such as surgical procedures near the thoracic duct and penetrating and blunt injuries to the chest. We present a case of a 49-year-old female who initially presented to the hospital with progressively worsening dyspnea leading to acute hypoxic respiratory failure requiring intubation and admission to the ICU. The pat

Subdural hemorrhage (SDH), the accumulation of blood between the dura and arachnoid mater, is one of the most commonly encountered traumatic findings in emergency radiology setting. The purpose of this essay is to review the pitfalls in the diagnosis of SDH including a) mimics on CT imaging and b) etiology other than accidental trauma. We describe several entities that closely mimic SDH on non-contrast CT scans. A knowledge of these mimics is essential in the emergency setting since overdiagnosis of SDH can lead to unnecessary hospital admissions, potentially invasive procedures, or even delay

UNLABELLED: The effect of COVID-19 on the cardiovascular system still needs to be clarified. Patients can develop a spectrum of cardiac diseases, from mild myocarditis to acute coronary syndrome with an impaired systolic fraction. We describe an interesting case of transient ST segment elevation in a COVID-19 patient admitted to ICU for severe respiratory distress syndrome. During his stay in ICU, the patient developed transient ST segment elevation in inferior-lateral leads which promptly resolved without requiring any additional invasive and/or pharmacological treatment. Transthoracic echoca

While invasive assessment of hemodynamics and testing of acute vasoreactivity in the catheterization laboratory is the gold standard for diagnosing pulmonary hypertension (PH) and pulmonary vascular disease (PVD) in children, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) serves as the initial diagnostic tool. International guidelines suggest several key echocardiographic variables and indices for the screening studies when PH is suspected. However, due to the complex anatomy and special physiological considerations, these may not apply to patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Misinterpretation

We systematically reviewed prospective studies for five hand procedures to analyse postoperative follow-up time, clinical or radiographic plateau, and whether the authors provide justification for times used. Demographic data, outcomes and mean follow-up were analysed. A total of 188 articles met our inclusion criteria. The mean postoperative follow-up time among these studies were carpal tunnel release, 21 months (range 1.5-111); cubital tunnel release, 27 months (2.5-46); open reduction and internal fixation for the distal radius fracture, 24 months (3-120); thumb carpometacarpal joint arthr

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD) is a crystal induced inflammation in joints, and causes severe pain in elderly people. The accumulation of pyrophosphate (PPi) in synovial fluid (SF) results from several enzymatic reactions, especially the highly activated e-NPPs, which catalyze the conversion of ATP to PPi. This study demonstrates the detection of relative catalytic activity of 3 enzymes-ecto-nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterases (e-NPPs), tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP), and ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolases (e-NTPDases)-using a single mol

BACKGROUND: Ruptured intracranial aneurysms are often associated with subarachnoid or intraparenchymal hemorrhage. However, the prevalence of subdural hemorrhage post aneurysmal rupture is low and rarely reported in scientific studies. Here, we report an unusual case of a ruptured posterior communicating artery aneurysm resulting in an isolated subdural hematoma located in the tentorial and spinal canal without subarachnoid or intraparenchymal hemorrhage.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, a 34-year-old woman with no history of trauma or coagulopathy was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma in th

Prayer marks are asymptomatic callosities resulting from repeated, extended pressure, and friction exerted on bony prominences when praying on hard ground. A 41-year-old woman with ulcerative colitis treated with infliximab was referred to our clinic due to skin changes on her feet that were suspected to be drug eruptions. The patient presented several asymptomatic, hyperpigmented, and hyperkeratotic plaques over the lateral malleoli suggesting that the lesions had a mechanical cause. Further exploration revealed that the patient, a practicing Muslim, prays in a sitting position called "Julus"

Primary epiploic appendagitis (PEA) is a rare and frequently underdiagnosed cause of acute abdominal pain. PEA most commonly affects obese, male patients in the 4th and 5th decade of life. Clinical presentation includes acute, localized, non-migrating pain without fever, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea and the laboratory workup is usually within normal limits. PEA is commonly mistaken as other more severe causes of acute abdominal pain, such as diverticulitis, acute appendicitis or cholecystitis and thus patients undergo unnecessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The emergence of computer

Lichen planus-like keratosis (LPLK) is an involuting cutaneous lesion often presenting between the fifth and seventh decades of life. These lesions typically appear abruptly as a solitary macule, papule, or plaque that continuously evolves as it undergoes regression. Clinical and dermoscopic features of LPLK can mimic both benign and malignant lesions, often prompting biopsy for accurate diagnosis. We describe a case of LPLK developing in a patient with a history of multiple skin cancers, including melanoma. Dermoscopy revealed peripheral granules and a central area with pinkish-brown pigmenta

OBJECTIVE: Although intestinal parasitic infections rarely cause acute appendicitis, they are common public health problems in undeveloped and developing countries. Parasitic infections should be kept in mind in patients clinically suspected of having acute appendicitis, and treatment procedures should be adopted according to the etiology.
METHODS: Herein we presented the cases of four patients with clinical findings of acute appendicitis. Patients were clinically suspected of having acute appendicitis, and Enterobius vermicularis was detected in the pathological examinations of specimens. Pi

BACKGROUND: In this paper the clinical and radiological features of three cases with paratesticular fibrous pseudotumor were presented after a retrospective analysis of medical archives of our hospital.
CASE REPORT: Each of the three cases had unilateral, multiple nodular lesions with smooth borders accompanied by a hydrocele. On sonographic examination, the lesions showed echogenicity similar to, or slightly lower than, the testis, and the two large lesions had posterior acoustic shadowing. Color Doppler ultrasound examination of two cases showed intralesional vascularity of mild-to-moderate

A boy presented initially to a Rheumatology clinic with a three year history of asymptomatic swelling of the third to fourth proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints bilaterally. A presumptive diagnosis of seronegative arthritis was made. Sulfasalazine was commenced without improvement and resulted in mood disturbance. Blood tests including ESR, lupus anticoagulant, rheumatoid factor and CCP antibodies were unremarkable. Hand radiographs were normal. MRI showed oedema within soft tissues around PIP joints. His care was transferred to the Rheumatology unit in our hospital and the rheumatological d

We report 2 cases of accidental intrathecal vincristine administration. These injections were scheduled as intravenous injections of vincristine at the same time as other intrathecal drugs were scheduled. The mistakes were recognized immediately after administration, and a lumbar puncture was performed to lavage the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) immediately after the incident. However, both cases developed progressive sensorimotor and radiculo-myelo-encephalopathy and the patients died 3 and 6 days after the incidents due to decerebration. A number of cases of accidental intrathecal vincristine ad

BACKGROUND: Colorectal surgeries frequently require bowel preparation. In children, (is this standard of care?: this method is mostly followed) this is usually performed using normal saline, which is very cumbersome and causes unnecessary discomfort. This study compared polyethylene glycol (PEG) with normal saline for preoperative bowel preparation in children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients, admitted in the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, for colonic and colorectal surgical procedures, were divided into two groups, I (PEG) and II (NS), randomly for bowel

Drug fever (DF) is a febrile reaction induced by a drug without additional clinical features like skin eruption. This adverse drug reaction is probably common but under diagnosed. While its outcome is generally favourable, DF generates unnecessary diagnostic procedures as well as hospitalisations or hospitalisation prolongations. Clinical presentation and biological findings are not specific. Fever is generally well tolerated but may be accompanied by general symptoms mimicking sepsis. Moderate biological disorders could be expected, including elevation or decrease in white blood cell count, e

Postoperative adhesions after abdominopelvic surgery can be prevented with the use of mechanical barriers such as Seprafilm membranes. However, this procedure is not without complications. Herein are reported 2 cases of Seprafilm-associated sterile peritonitis after gynecologic surgical procedures. Both patients had symptoms that mimicked intraabdominal abscess formation soon after the initial surgery (1 patient had delivered via cesarean section, and the other had undergone total hysterectomy because of adenomyosis). However, laparoscopic examinations in these 2 patients revealed only gel-lik

Multifactorial disorders in mineral metabolism and bone structure occur early in the course of chronic kidney disease. The new term of 'chronic kidney disease--mineral and bone disorders' has been used to encompass a broad syndrome in which various abnormalities in bone and mineral metabolism are present in patients with chronic kidney disease. Brown tumors are an uncommon type of bone lesions that represent a focal manifestation of high-turnover bone disease. In our report, we describe a patient with chronic kidney disease on chronic hemodialysis that presented with multiple osseous lesions o
