[A 77-year-old woman with myoclonus and epilepsy].

We present a 77-year-old woman with myoclonus and epilepsy. She was well until 35 years of age, when she noted an onset of trembling of the legs upon standing. Her symptom slowly progressed, and she felt a difficulty in standing when she was 39-year-old. She had a major motor seizure without an apparent focal onset when she was 46-year-old. She also developed tremor in her hands, and she felt difficulty in holding a glass filled with water. She was admitted to our service for the first time in 1965 when she was 51-year-old. She showed wide-based ataxic gait with truncal titubation. In finger t

Bisphenols disrupt differentiation of the pigmented cells during larval brain formation in the ascidian.

The endocrine disruptor Bisphenol A (BPA), a widely employed molecule in plastics, has been shown to affect several biological processes in vertebrates, mostly via binding to nuclear receptors. Neurodevelopmental effects of BPA have been documented in vertebrates and linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, probably because some nuclear receptors are present in the vertebrate brain. Similarly, endocrine disruptors have been shown to affect neurodevelopment in marine invertebrates such as ascidians, mollusks or echinoderms, but whether invertebrate nuclear receptors are involved in the mode-of-a

A structurally characterized water-soluble galactoglucomannan from Poria cocos alleviates rheumatoid arthritis by regulating the JAK2/STAT3 and NF-κB signaling pathways.

Current treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune disorder, are associated with several negative side effects, necessitating the development of safer alternative treatments. In this study, we focus on Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf, a homologous fungus traditionally used as a functional ingredient in East Asian cuisine and traditional medicine. The water-soluble heteropolysaccharide PCP70-2-1, which has an average molecular weight of 13 kDa, was obtained from the sclerotium of P. cocos, and its structure was characterized through monosaccharide composition, partial acid hydrolys

Porous poly (DL-lactic acid) modified chitosan-gelatin scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Chitosan-gelatin (Cs-Gel) scaffolds are modified with poly (DL-lactic acid) (PDLLA) dichloromethane solution of different concentrations (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0%) and immersed in water after the evaporation of the solvent. The swollen scaffolds are freeze dried. The concentration of PDLLA has significant effects on both the physicomechanical properties and the cytocompatibility. Data reveal that only the 0.1% concentration could increase the tensile strength fourfold in comparison with the pristine Cs-Gel scaffold, while maintaining the human fibroblast adhesion, migration, and proliferation just l

Toxic encephalopathy and acute brain-swelling in children.

Problems in the diagnosis and management of children who present with an acute encephalopathic illness are examined. The aetiology, pathogenesis, pathology and clinical features of acute toxic encephalopathies are discussed, together with the differential diagnosis of those encephalopathies which are not induced by toxicity. Guidance is given on measures for the reduction of raised intracranial pressure and the management of defects of homeostasis. It is essential that facilities for intensive monitoring of these children be available during the acute phase of illness in order to reduce the nu

Khamiras, a natural cardiac tonic: An overview.

The Unani system of Medicine (Unanipathy), which originated in Greece, is based on the principles proposed by Galen, a Greek practitioner. Since then, many Arab and Persian scholars have contributed to the system. Among them Ibn-e-Sina, an Arab philosopher and Physicist who wrote 'Kitab-al-shifa' are worth mentioning. This system has an extensive and inspiring record in India. It was introduced in India around the tenth century A.D with the spread of Islamic civilization. At present, Unanipathy has become an important part of the Indian system of Medicine. Unani medicines have been used since

Calcium measurements in primates during and after hypokinesia in establishing calcium deficiency during prolonged hypokinesia.

Hypokinesia (diminished movement) induces significant calcium (Ca) changes, but little is known about the effect of hypokinesia (HK) on Ca deficiency. Measuring Ca changes during and after HK the aim of this study was to determine Ca deficiency during prolonged HK. Studies were done on 12 male Macaca mulatta (rhesus monkeys) aged 3-5 yr (5.58-6.42 kg) during a 90-d pre-HK period, a 90-d HK period, and a 15-d post-HK period. Monkeys were equally divided into two groups: vivarium control monkeys (VCM) and hypokinetic monkeys (HKM). Hypokinetic monkeys were kept in small individual cages that res

Sensory inputs from the oral region to the cerebral cortex in behaving rats: an analysis of unit responses in cortical somatosensory and taste areas during ingestive behavior.

1. The responses of 90 cortical neurons in the somatosensory and gustatory areas were recorded with chronically implanted fine wires in freely moving Wistar rats. The responses were analyzed mainly while the animals were freely licking solutions and eating dry pellets. Cortical neurons were classified into several groups according to their response properties. 2. "Mechanosensitive" neurons (n = 20) showed rhythmic phasic activity in different phases of the licking cycle, depending on the location of their receptive field in the peripheral orofacial region. 3. "Movement-related" neurons (n = 27

Links between energy budgets, somatic condition, and life history reveal heterogeneous energy management tactics in a group-living mesocarnivore.

BACKGROUND: Optimal management of voluntary energy expenditure is crucial to the survival and reproductive success of wild animals. Nevertheless, a growing appreciation of inter-individual variation in the internal state driving movement suggests that individuals may follow different, yet equally optimal tactics under the same environmental conditions. However, few studies in wild populations have investigated the occurrence and demographic context of different contemporaneous energetic expenditure tactics. Here, we explore this neglected aspect of energy budgeting in order to determine the ef

Public Transport Mobility in Venice.

Venice is a unique city built on a group of islands within a shallow lagoon and is internationally renowned for its extraordinary cultural heritage and distinctive urban landscape. However, the rapid and largely uncontrolled growth of tourism has led to overtourism, generating serious challenges such as congestion, rising living costs, and the displacement of residents from the historic centre. Unlike most urban contexts, where public transport systems operate alongside private motor vehicles, mobility in Venice relies almost entirely on pedestrian movement and scheduled water bus services. Determination of physicochemical, cytotoxic, and whitening properties of plasma-activated liquids for their potential use as mouthwashes.

Multiple drug resistance (MDR) among antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a major challenge in modern medicine, prompting interest in alternative antimicrobials like mouthwashes and toothpastes. Plasma-activated liquids (PALs), produced by exposing liquids to cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), are enriched with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) that may have antimicrobial properties. However, their biocompatibility with mammalian cells remains underexplored. In this study, three formulations were subjected to CAP: (L1) zinc sulfate and calcium chloride, (L2) xylitol and sodium fluoride, a

Enhancing patient experience through tablet design: A study on the swallowability of almond-shaped tablets.

Tablet geometry significantly influences medication adherence and comfort, especially among individuals with swallowing difficulties. Conventional tablet shapes such as oval or cylindrical may hinder esophageal transit, causing discomfort and reducing adherence. This study investigated the functional impact of a novel almond-shaped tablet, designed to improve swallowability and enhance patient experience. Mechanical performance associated with tablet movement down the esophagus was assessed using in-vitro modelling techniques, including polymer tubing and funnel flow simulations, with strain m

Metastable States of 2D-Material-on-Metal-Islands Structures Revealed by Thermal Cycling.

The integration of 2D materials with artificially textured substrates offers exceptional opportunities for engineering novel functional devices. A straightforward technological route towards such devices is a mechanical dry or wet transfer of 2D layer or heterostructure onto prepared patterned elements with subsequent van der Waals bonding. An issue of van der Waals bond stability is crucial for device operation but is almost unexplored. In our research, we address it by studying transport properties of hBN/graphene heterostructures transferred onto metallic island arrays and subjected to ther

Novel Methodology to Assess Salt Movement Between Mortar and Stones from Heritage in Spain.

The development of sustainable cementitious materials is crucial to reduce the environmental footprint of the construction industry. Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) have emerged as promising environmentally friendly alternatives; however, their compatibility with natural stone in heritage structures remains poorly understood, especially regarding salt migration and related damage to stones. This study presents a novel methodology for assessing salt movement in solid materials between two types of stones-Boñar and Silos-and two types of binders: blended Portland cement (BPC) and an AAM. A novel in vitro repellent bioassay to evaluate the effect of wood vinegar against louse Haematopinus tuberculatus.

The water buffalo farm with intensive breeding techniques promotes the spread of lice (Haematopinus tuberculatus), leading to a reduction in meat and milk productions. Current control measures include the use of chemicals, which in the long-term lead to the development of resistance. Given the lack of alternative solutions, the aim of this study was to evaluate the repellent effect of a low impact by-product, the wood vinegar (WV), against H. tuberculatus using a new in vitro bioassay test. The test consisted of a glass Petri dishes subdivided in 3 separate areas. WV was tested at different co

Giant Hydatid Cyst Originating From Psoas Muscle Extending to the Iliac Bone: A Case Report.

Hydatid cysts, caused by the Echinococcus granulosus parasite, predominantly affect the liver and lungs, but can also impact other organs such as the kidneys, brain, and muscles. Infection occurs when individuals ingest eggs from contaminated food or water, leading to cyst formation primarily in the liver. While hydatid cysts are commonly found in various endemic regions, muscular involvement is rare, particularly in the psoas muscle. This report presents a case of a muscular hydatid cyst, describes its management, and emphasizes the need for awareness and prompt intervention. A 50-year-old ma

Detection and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Salmonella enterica recovered from house fly intestinal tracts and environments of selected broiler farms in Texas.

The entry of drug-resistant Salmonella enterica into the food supply is a challenge to public health and food safety. One emerging concern is the role of synanthropic insects for moving microbial pathogens throughout poultry production systems, where insects commonly thrive. We investigated the presence and phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility of S. enterica from insect and environmental samples from broiler farms. Insects were collected throughout the broiler house and adjacent compost barn. Environmental samples (poultry feed, drinking water, fresh litter, and feces) were collected simult

Validity and value of metabolic connectivity in mouse models of β-amyloid and tauopathy.

Among functional imaging methods, metabolic connectivity (MC) is increasingly used for investigation of regional network changes to examine the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) or movement disorders. Hitherto, MC was mostly used in clinical studies, but only a few studies demonstrated the usefulness of MC in the rodent brain. The goal of the current work was to analyze and validate metabolic regional network alterations in three different mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases (β-amyloid and tau) by use of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-d-glucose positr
