Epidemic Rift Valley fever is generally recognised when a higher than expected frequency of abortions and haemorrhages occurs in sheep and other livestock. Other infectious agents can cause similar clinical signs. In Egypt, an outbreak of abortions and haemorrhages in sheep and goats in 1982 was traced to intoxication with the rodenticide brodifacoum. The epidemic lasted for three weeks and resulted in 120 deaths. The end of the epidemic coincided with a heavy rainstorm. The rodenticides brodifacoum, difenacoum, coumatetralyl and warfarin are determined in animal relicta by high-performance exclusion chromatography on porous silica. The first three compounds are not separated, but are subsequently differentiated by adsorption or reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography of the appropriate eluate fraction collected from the exclusion column. Unsymmetrical methylene derivatives 5 were prepared following a known method, by reaction of the Mannich bases of 2-naphthols 4 with indoles. The benzopyrone molecule coumarin is a popular fluorescent scaffold, but how chemical modifications affect its properties is not well understood. We investigated this using halogenated 7-hydroxycoumarin, unsubstituted 4-methylumbiliferone, and ortho-chloro and bromo substitutions on the phenolic ring. Charge density data from X-Ray diffraction and computational methods revealed that halogenation at the ortho position significantly reduced quantum yield (QY). Specifically, 7-hydroxycoumarin (1) had a QY of 70 %, while ortho-chloro (2) and ortho-bromo (3) had QYs of 61 % and 30 %, respectively.

CASE HISTORY: Between June 2017 and April 2019, three captive tuatara from a zoological facility in the South Island of New Zealand were found unwell and admitted to veterinary care. One other tuatara from the same facility was found dead from misadventure in May 2019.

Bromadiolone, a second generation anticoagulant rodenticide was tested on Mus musculus to evaluate its effects on blood, liver and kidney at varied time intervals of 6, 12, 24 and 48 hrs. Groups of six animals each were selected for experiment. Animals were administered with bromadiolone in the form of bait at 6, 12, 24 and 48 hrs time intervals. Control animals were maintained for each time interval. After each time interval the experiment and the control animals were sacrificed and the effect of bromadiolone on blood, liver and kidney were studied.
