Preliminary evaluation of the impact of the Chernobyl radiological contamination on the frequency of central nervous system malformations in 18 regions of Europe. The EUROCAT Working Group.

The teratological impact of radiological contamination from the Chernobyl accident was evaluated in relation to central nervous system and eye defects in 18 regional registries in nine countries of Western Europe. Six classes of anomaly were analysed: neural tube defects, arhinencephaly, microcephaly and brain reduction, hydrocephaly, anophthalmos and microphthalmos, and congenital cataract. Conceptions up to 31 August 1986 were grouped into two exposure cohorts. In cohort A the sensitive period of fetal development to radiation fell wholly or partly between 1 May and 30 June 1986. Cohort B in

The role of tumor necrosis factor signaling pathways in the response of murine brain to irradiation.

Late effects after radiotherapy for brain tumors can be severe and tend to limit the efficacy of this treatment modality. The mechanisms governing the development of late radiation-induced lesions in the brain are not clear, but they are preceded by cycles of molecular and cellular events including production of cytokines, one of which is tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. There is literature to support possible roles for TNF-alpha as a contributor to edema, gliosis, and demyelination in the brain, all of which are histopathologically associated with radiation-induced brain damage. We have exa

Physicians' perceptions of teratogenic risk associated with radiography and CT during early pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to determine family physicians' and obstetricians' perceptions of the risk of major fetal malformations associated with exposure to radiation from radiography and CT during early pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Structured questionnaires were sent to 400 family physicians and 100 obstetricians selected randomly across Ontario, Canada. The physicians were informed about the 1-3% baseline risk for major malformations and were asked about their perceptions of the risk to the fetus associated with an abdominal radiograph and an abdominal CT scan during e

Platelet-rich plasma ameliorates gamma radiation-induced nephrotoxicity via modulating oxidative stress and apoptosis.

AIMS: As a source of growth factors and with its cytoprotective properties, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) received considerable attention in regenerative medicine. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the protective efficacy of PRP against γ-radiation-induced nephrotoxicity. MAIN METHODS: Forty male rats were distributed in four groups: 1) control, 2) PRP, 3) Radiation, and 4) PRP + radiation. Nephrotoxicity was examined in rats after a whole body γ-irradiation at a single dose of 8 Gy. Activated PRP (0.5 ml/kg BW) was injected subcutaneously twice weekly for three successive weeks prior to

Radiation-induced aberrant structural covariance networks in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a source-based morphometry study.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced brain injury (RBI) is a common complication in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who have undergone radiotherapy (RT), which is characterized by significant cognitive and psychological impairments. Although radiation-induced regional structural abnormalities have been well-reported, the effects of RT on the whole brain structural covariance networks are mostly unknown. Here, we performed a source-based morphometry (SBM) study to solve this issue. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 131 NPC patients with pre- and post-RT were stratified into pre-RT

Elevated frequency of abnormalities in barn swallows from Chernobyl.

Ever since the Chernobyl accident in 1986, that contaminated vast areas in surrounding countries with radiation, abnormalities and birth defects have been reported in human populations. Recently, several studies suggested that the elevated frequency of such abnormalities can be attributed to poverty and stress in affected human populations. Here, we present long-term results for a free-living population of barn swallows, Hirundo rustica, demonstrating the presence of 11 morphological abnormalities in populations around Chernobyl, but much less frequently in an uncontaminated Ukrainian control

Defects of the central nervous system in Finland. IV. Associations with diagnostic x-ray examinations.

Based on the Finnish Register of Congenital Malformations a search was undertaken to find possible associations between defects of the CNS and diagnostic x-ray examinations of the mother during pregnancy as well as pelvic x-ray examinations prior to pregnancy. Time-area--matched pregnancies and polydactylic children were used as controls. The risk of having a microcephalic child was increased for mothers with pelvic x-ray prior to pregnancy, but the number of discordant pairs was small. Of the examinations performed during pregnancy, fetal x-ray was significantly more common among mothers who

Suspected Radiation-Induced Complete Atrioventricular Block Presenting 39 Years After Childhood Thoracic Cancer Treatment: A Case Report.

Complete atrioventricular block is a serious cardiac conduction abnormality with multiple etiologies. We present the case of a 50-year-old man who presented to the emergency room with bradycardia found at home, associated with fatigue and exertional dyspnea, which eventually progressed from sinus rhythm to complete atrioventricular block with mild elevation in high-sensitivity troponin. Further inquiry revealed a remote history of childhood lung malignancy treated with surgical resection, chemotherapy, and thoracic radiotherapy approximately 39 years prior, representing one of the longest repo

Focal radiation fibrosis after radioimmunotherapy for follicular non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

A 75-year-old man with relapsed follicular non-Hodgkin lymphoma confined to a solitary lung mass was treated with radioimmunotherapy (RIT) using yttrium 90-ibritumomab tiuxetan. Imaging with positron emission tomography/computed tomography showed a complete response 3 months after RIT. Thirteen months after RIT, his positron emission tomography/computed tomography scan showed a fluorodeoxyglucose-avid infiltrate in the area of the previous lung mass. Bronchoscopy revealed the area to be obstructed with fibrosis, and cytologic washings and brushings did not show lymphoma. The patient remains as

Radiation-induced recurrent intestinal pseudo-obstruction.

The syndrome of intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a complex of signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction without evidence of mechanical obstruction of the intestinal lumen. A patient with radiation-induced intestinal pseudoobstruction is described. The patient is a 74-year old woman with a history of chronic diarrhea, recurrent episodes of crampy abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting since receiving a 13,000 rad radiation dose to the pelvis in 1954. She has been hospitalized on many occasions for symptoms and signs of bowel obstruction. Upper gastrointestinal contrast roentgenograms with small

Ionizing radiation (IR) induced sex-specific reproductive and offspring developmental toxicity in Zebrafish.

Ionizing radiation (IR) is a ubiquitous environmental radiation factor with natural and anthropogenic sources. The cumulative discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the ocean by Japan in the recent years has been making the impact of IR on aquatic living organisms a topic of great concern in both academic circles and public opinion. However, sex-specific mechanisms of IR-induced reproductive and offspring developmental toxicity remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the sexually dimorphic effects of acute X-ray radiation on zebrafish (Danio rerio) reproduction using integrated p

Unusual radiologic findings in the thorax after radiation therapy.

Radiation therapy is used to treat many intrathoracic and chest wall malignancies. A variety of changes may occur after radiation therapy to the thorax. Radiation therapy produces dramatic effects in the lung. Pulmonary necrosis is an uncommon, severe, late complication of adjuvant postoperative radiation therapy. Bronchiolitis obliterans with organizing pneumonia is a distinct clinicopathologic entity characterized by patchy, migratory, peripheral air-space infiltrates. Radiation therapy can also cause spontaneous pneumothorax, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. In the mediastinum, radiation ther

Endoplasmic reticulum stress contributes to high-dose radiation-induced chronic mechanical and thermal neuropathic pain.

IntroductionExposure to high doses of radiation can cause serious harm to human health and lead to long-term chronic pain. However, the mechanisms underlying pain caused by radiation overexposure remain largely unknown.MethodsIn this study, the double hind paws and tail of mice were exposed to 40Gy electron beams to establish a radiation-induced pain model.ResultsEven after the inflammation of the irradiated skin subsided, the mice continued to exhibit prolonged mechanical and thermal pain. The results indicated that the neuron injury marker activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) was markedl

Mechanisms and protective measures for radiation-induced brachial plexus nerve injury.

Radiation therapy is a common treatment modality for patients with malignant tumors of the head and neck, chest and axilla. However, radiotherapy inevitably causes damage to normal tissues at the irradiated site, among which damage to the brachial plexus nerve(BP) is a serious adverse effect in patients receiving radiation therapy in the scapular or axillary regions, with clinical manifestations including abnormal sensation, neuropathic pain, and dyskinesia, etc. These adverse effects seriously reduce the living quality of patients and pose obstacles to their prognosis. Therefore, it is import

Estimation of genetic risks of exposure to ionizing radiation: status in the year 2000.

This paper provides an overview of the advances in the estimation of genetic risks of exposure of human populations to ionizing radiation with particular emphasis on the advances during the last decade. Among the latter are: (a) an upward revision of the estimates of the baseline frequencies of Mendelian diseases (from 1.25 to 2.4%); (b) the conceptual change to the use of a doubling dose based on human data on spontaneous mutation rates and mouse data on induced mutation rates (from the one based entirely on mouse data on spontaneous and induced mutation rates, which was the case thus far); (

Rapamycin Ameliorates Radiation-Induced Testis Damage in Mice.

Male infertility is an important problem in human and animal reproduction. The testis is the core of male reproduction, which is very sensitive to radiation. The decline of male reproductive ability is a common trend in the world. Radiation is a physical factor leading to abnormal male reproductive function. To investigate the potential mechanisms of testicular damage induced by radiation and explore effective strategies to alleviate radiation-induced testis injury, C57BL/6 mice were irradiated with 8.0 Gy of X-ray irradiation. Testis and epididymis were collected at days 1, 3, and 7 after rad

Imaging of trauma in the pregnant patient.

The pregnant trauma patient presents an important and challenging encounter for the clinical team and radiologist. In this article, we present several key aspects of the imaging workup of pregnant trauma patients, beginning with a review of the modalities that are used in this setting. Ultrasonography plays an important role in initial evaluation of the fetus but a limited role in evaluation of maternal injuries. Given that conventional radiography and computed tomography are the "workhorse" modalities for evaluation of pregnant trauma patients, radiologists must pay particular attention to ra

Preliminary study on the anti-apoptotic mechanism of Astragaloside IV on radiation-induced brain cells.

With multiple targets and low cytotoxicity, natural medicines can be used as potential neuroprotective agents. The increase in oxidative stress levels and inflammatory responses in the brain caused by radiation affects cognitive function and neuronal structure, and ultimately leads to abnormal changes in neurogenesis, differentiation, and apoptosis. Astragaloside Ⅳ (AS-Ⅳ), one of the main active constituents of astragalus, is known for its antioxidant, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, anti-infarction, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and wound healing, angiogenesis, and other protective effect

A non-human primate model of radiation-induced cachexia.

Cachexia, or muscle wasting, is a serious health threat to victims of radiological accidents or patients receiving radiotherapy. Here, we propose a non-human primate (NHP) radiation-induced cachexia model based on clinical and molecular pathology findings. NHP exposed to potentially lethal partial-body irradiation developed symptoms of cachexia such as body weight loss in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Severe body weight loss as high as 20-25% was observed which was refractory to nutritional intervention. Radiographic imaging indicated that cachectic NHP lost as much as 50% of skeletal mus
