The Elephant in the Room: Reckoning With Collegiality and Authorship in Academic Pharmacy.

Collaborative projects help faculty produce scholarship while balancing teaching, research, and service responsibilities. However, faculty's assumptions about contributions and authorship definitions can lead to confusion and disappointment in collaborative scholarship. Lapses in communication can cause delays, uneven workloads, and perceptions of unfairness. Inconsistent application of authorship criteria and a lack of transparency in authorship order may further create frustration and disengagement for future projects, particularly, when their contributions affect promotion and tenure. To pr

Psychosocial Factors Explaining Academic Dropout among Scholarship Students at a Public University in Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Student dropout in higher education is one of the most concerning issues on the agendas of countries, and it remains a challenge for the higher education system. This is reflected in cases where, despite the benefits and support provided by the state, students decide to give up their scholarships for various reasons. These reasons include economic, social, psychological, organizational, and interaction-related factors, as well as internal and external factors, all of which highlight the inefficiency of the higher education system. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of social

Investigating Undergraduate Student Perceptions of Classroom Inclusion-Emergence of the Student Perceptions of Instructor Practices-Inclusion/Exclusion (SPIP-I/E) Framework.

While assertions are common about what fosters inclusive undergraduate STEM classrooms, few studies have systematically investigated student perspectives. Additionally, it is unclear how students broadly perceive active learning practices in relation to inclusion. As such, we purposefully investigated student perceptions of classroom inclusion across courses in a biology department enriched with evidence-based teaching and situated in an urban, public institution. Student perceptions were investigated using open-ended prompts on a department-wide, end-of-term assessment. Results revealed that

Sustaining collegiate recovery programs: a literature review and SWOT analysis.

Substance use disorder and behavioral addictions remain significant concerns within higher education, yet little research has examined Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs) from an organizational perspective. This narrative literature review synthesized 71 peer reviewed studies to examine the internal and external organizational factors influencing the long term sustainability of CRPs using a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) framework. Following a comprehensive literature search, findings were analyzed using deductive thematic synthesis to identify recurring organizationa

Photocatalytic stannylation of white phosphorus.

Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) are highly important chemicals, finding numerous applications in both academia and industry. Herein we describe a simple photocatalytic method for the stannylation of white phosphorus (P4) using a cheap, commercially-available distannane, (Bu3Sn)2, and anthraquinone as a simple photocatalyst. Subsequent 'one pot' transformation of the resulting stannylated monophosphine intermediate (Bu3Sn)3P provides direct, convenient and versatile access to valuable OPCs such as acylated phosphines and tetraalkylphosphonium salts.

Adaptive Leadership and Independent Opinions: Lessons From the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme.

Malaysia was slow to begin its COVID-19 immunization program for various reasons. However, it is one of the fastest developing countries to vaccinate 80% of its adult population. Nontraditional health leadership played a large role in the implementation of the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (NCIP). Independent opinions from academia also helped the NCIP and may be useful as a way of pushing forward recommendations that may otherwise be difficult to make.

Bridging the Valley of Death of therapeutics for neurodegeneration.

Neurodegenerative diseases are the sixth leading cause of death in the US. The market for disease-modifying drugs is enormous, but no drug exists. Academic scientists are increasingly pursuing the discovery and development of therapeutics. Their progress could potentially reduce the risk of failure sufficiently to warrant greater industry investment and movement of leads into clinical trials. Here we consider the many obstacles to the development of therapeutics for neurodegenerative disease within academia, with a special focus on organizational issues.

The National MD-PhD Program Outcomes Study: career paths followed by Black and Hispanic graduates.

Previous studies on attrition from MD-PhD programs have shown that students who self-identify as Black are more likely to withdraw before graduating than Hispanic students and students not from groups underrepresented in medicine (non-UIM). Here, we analyzed data collected for the National MD-PhD Program Outcomes Study, a national effort to track the careers of over 10,000 individuals who have graduated from MD-PhD programs over the past 60 years. On average, Black trainees took slightly longer to graduate, were less likely to choose careers in academia, and were more likely to enter nonacadem…

A countermeasure development pipeline.

We have developed an integrated pipeline for countermeasure discovery that, under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health Countermeasures Against Chemical Threats network, is one of the few efforts within academia that by design spans the spectrum from discovery to phase I. The successful implementation of this approach for cyanide would enable efficient proof-of-concept studies that would lay the foundation for a generalizable strategy for parallel mechanistic studies and accelerated countermeasure development in the face of new and emerging chemical threats.

From shortage to solutions: Strategies to reduce burnout in nursing faculty.

The United States is experiencing an increasing demand for health care services driven by an aging population, resulting in unprecedented pressure on the nursing workforce. Simultaneously, nursing academia is challenged by faculty shortages, decreased wages, policy changes, declining enrollment, increased work demands, and faculty burnout. These challenges adversely impact the stability of the nursing academic workforce and the profession's ability to educate the next generation of nurses. In acknowledging that burnout is a systemic problem that must be fixed by academic leadership, this artic…

Optimizing the lighting environment in college teaching buildings in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan region based on hybrid lighting patterns.

With the rapid expansion of higher education campuses in China, teaching buildings have become major contributors to lighting-related energy consumption. Most university teaching buildings adopt interior corridor layouts, in which classrooms rely primarily on single-sided daylighting, often resulting in insufficient daylight availability, particularly in north-facing spaces. Improving the lighting performance of interior corridor-type teaching buildings is therefore critical for enhancing energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. In this study, an evaluation framework for indoor ligh

Academic partnerships with clinical nurse scientist mentors improve the Doctor of Nursing Practice student experience.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree has become firmly established as the terminal practice degree for advanced practice registered nurses in the United States. A defining component of the DNP curriculum requires students to implement a scholarly project that addresses a clinical problem and improves patient or system outcomes. This article describes the development and implementation of a structured clinical-academic partnership between a university-based DNP nurse anesthesia program and a pediatric health care organization in the southeastern United States. Central to this collaborati

Impacts of Sharing an Instructor's Religious Identity on Students in a Large-Enrollment Introductory Biology Course.

Stereotypes about scientists narrow how students relate to them and influence how students see themselves in science. However, sharing identities and interests of contemporary scientists enables students to see aspects of their possible selves in that role. Previous work has demonstrated positive impacts of scientist role models on students who share marginalized identities in society and STEM, though less work has addressed whether the same positive effect would occur if the shared identity is more common in a broader societal context. We address this question by exploring the impact of an in

Medical education from a succession perspective: what can the apprenticeship model bring to competency-based education?

This Scholarly Perspective frames workplace-based training in medical education as a succession concept and explores how the benefits of the traditional apprenticeship model can integrate with modern competency-based medical education. In 2024, the author broadened the construct of medical competence into 3 semi-hierarchical layers: canonical, contextual, and personalized. Canonical competence (the canon that all professionals should know) relates to knowledge and skills that meet generalized, context-independent standards, assessed with methods of high psychometric quality. Personalized compe
