Parasitation of sea trout (Salmo trutta trutta L.) from the spawning ground and German coastal waters off Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Baltic Sea.

A total of 52 sea trouts, Salmo trutta trutta, were studied for parasites, originating from German freshwater streams and coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. While 35 specimens were caught mainly close to the shoreline in the Baltic Sea, 17 were sampled during their spawning migration in Warnow River and other neighboring rivers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A total of 12 different metazoan parasite species were found in sea trout originating from the Baltic Sea, including five digeneans, two cestodes, three nematodes, and two acanthocephalans. Marine and freshwater species were found. In th

Parasites of juvenile brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) from Hunt Creek, Michigan.

Four parasite species (Crepidostomum cooperi, Cystidicoloides ephemeridarum, Acanthocephalus dirus, Salmincola edwardsii) infected 215 juvenile brook trout (105 young-of-year; 110, 1-yr-old) from Hunt Creek, Michigan, in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Prevalences of these species in 2004 (main study year) varied from 29 to 37%. Crepidostomnum cooperi had the highest mean intensity and mean abundance, followed by C. ephemeridarum. The number of fish infected with each parasite species was significantly higher in 1-yr-old fish than in young-of-year fish. Also, the mean intensities and mean abundances of

The pathoparasitology of the alimentary tract and pancreas of nonhuman primates: a review.

A review of the literature concerning the gross and histologic lesions associated with protozoal and metazoal parasitism in the alimentary tract and pancreas of nonhuman primates is presented. In addition, the natural history, morphology, life cycle, methods for diagnosis, and potential for zoonotic disease are reviewed briefly for each parasite discussed. The parasite species reviewed in detail are those most common or most likely to produce lesions in the alimentary tract and pancreas of the nonhuman primate host. All parasites, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic, in each major group (protozo

[Parasitic calcifications: elements for diagnostic (author's transl)].

Among the radiologic calcifications, those of parasitic etiology are rather commonly found. They are heterotopic dystrophic calcifications, their late apparition in the evolution of the parasitic disease is not subordinate to any metabolic dysfunction. The authors describe the morphologic and the topographic criteria of different parasitic calcifications except the fungic ones and protozoaire. Moreover they state for each parasite some epidemiological, biological and clinical facts which can be helpful for the diagnosis.

Richness and diversity of helminth communities in the Japanese grenadier anchovy, Coilia nasus, during its anadromous migration in the Yangtze River, China.

To determine the relationship between the species richness, diversity of helminth communities, and migration distance during upward migration from coast to freshwater, helminth communities in the anadromous fish Coilia nasus were investigated along the coast of the East China Sea, the Yangtze Estuary, and 3 localities on the Yangtze River. Six helminth species were found in 224 C. nasus . Changes in salinity usually reduced the survival time of parasites, and thus the number of helminth species and their abundance. Except for the 2 dominant helminths, the acanthocephalan Acanthosentis cheni an

Persistence of a recurrent group of intestinal helminth species in a coyote population from southern Texas.

The persistence and interrelationships of a recurrent group of intestinal helminth species in a coyote population from southern Texas were determined; data were collected at 4-yr intervals (1979, 1983, and 1987). The a priori expectation was that a defined recurrent group of helminth species persisted over time and that the respective helminth species were stable in terms of their abundances. The Fager index and subsequent recurrent group analysis indicated a small group of taxonomically unrelated recurring species of helminths that always demonstrated affinities with each other and occasional

Parasite fauna of Antarctic Macrourus whitsoni (Gadiformes: Macrouridae) in comparison with closely related macrourids.

BACKGROUND: The extreme, isolated environment within the Antarctic Convergence has fuelled the evolution of a highly endemic fauna with unique adaptations. One species known from this area is the Whitson's grenadier Macrourus whitsoni (Regan, 1913). While closely related species occurring in the Northern Hemisphere were targets of a variety of studies, knowledge on M. whitsoni is scarce, including not only its ecology but also its parasite fauna. Parasites, an often overlooked but important component of every ecosystem, can provide important insights into host ecology, including feeding habits

Parasitic infections, hematological and biochemical parameters suggest appropriate health status of wild coati populations in anthropic Atlantic Forest remnants.

Coatis are hosts of a great diversity of parasites, that due to anthropic pressures in forest fragments, like changes in landscapes and ecosystems, can influence the dynamics and physiological responses to those parasite infections, affecting the animal's health and fitness. This is the first study about health parameters and parasitic infections of wild coati (Nasua nasua) populations in the Atlantic Forest (Pernambuco Center of Endemism). The following hypotheses were evaluated: (i) infections and co-infections by gastrointestinal parasites and ectoparasites can generate changes in the healt

Do different parasite species interact in their effects on host fitness? A case study on parasites of the amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis.

There is a gap in our understanding of the relative and interactive effects of different parasite species on the same host population. Here we examine the effects of the acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus galaxii, an unidentified cyclophyllidean cestode, and the trematodes Coitocaecum parvum and Microphallus sp. on several fitness components of the amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis, using a combination of infection surveys and both survival and behavioural trials. In addition to significant relationships between specific parasites and measures of amphipod survival, maturity, mating success and be

Gastrointestinal helminths of Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) from Stranger Point, 25 de Mayo/King George Island, Antarctica.

The aim of this work is to contribute to the knowledge of gastrointestinal parasites of the Gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) from 25 de Mayo/King George Island (South Shetlands, Antarctica). Gastrointestinal tracts of 37 fresh dead individuals (21 chicks, 10 juveniles, and 6 adults) were collected from December 2006 to February 2012 and examined for macroparasites. Four adult parasite species were found: one Cestoda species (Parorchites zederi), two Nematoda species (Stegophorus macronectes and Tetrameres wetzeli), and one Acanthocephalan (Corynosoma shackletoni). Two species of immature acan

Piscidins in the intestine of European perch, Perca fluviatilis, naturally infected with an enteric worm.

This study set out to determine how an enteric parasite, the thorny-headed worm Acanthocephalus lucii, affected the expression of antimicrobial peptides (piscidins) in its host population, the European perch (Perca fluviatilis) collected from Lake Piediluco in Central Italy. A total of 87 perch were examined; 44 (50.5%) were infected with A. lucii (1-18 worms fish(-1)). Pathological changes and immune response were assessed using histological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical techniques. The acanthocephalans only penetrated the surficial zone of the intestinal wall and induced only slig

Monsters of the sea serpent: parasites of an oarfish, Regalecus russellii.

Examination of a small portion of the viscera of an oarfish ( Regalecus russellii ) recovered from Santa Catalina Island, southern California, revealed numerous tetraphyllidean tapeworm plerocercoids, Clistobothrium cf. montaukensis; 2 juvenile nematodes, Contracaecum sp.; and a fragment of an adult acanthocephalan, family Arhythmacanthidae. This suggests that the fish was relatively heavily parasitized. The presence of larval and juvenile worms suggests that oarfish are preyed upon by deep-swimming predators such as the shortfin mako shark, Isurus oxyrinchus , known to be a definitive host fo

Population structure and dynamics of Gammarus fossarum (Amphipoda) upstream and downstream from effluents of sewage treatment plants.

Two streams in Germany (Körsch and Lockwitzbach), each with two sampling sites above and below a sewage treatment plant (STP) discharging effluent, were investigated. Sampling sites were characterized, and exposure monitoring for chemicals with known or assumed endocrine disrupting potential was carried out. Both the population structure and the population dynamics of Gammarus fossarum were examined. The physicochemical parameters measured at the sampling sites of the Lockwitzbach and Körsch streams were found not to reach levels having an acute toxic impact on the development of gammarids. Th

Temporal changes in the prevalence of parasites in two Oregon estuary-dwelling fishes.

The parasite faunas of juvenile English sole (Parophrys vetulus) in 1971-1972 and staghorn sculpin (Leptocottus armatus) in 1971 from Yaquina Bay, Oregon, were compared with faunas found in the same estuary in 1997-2000 (English sole) and 1999-2000 (staghorn sculpin). The 7 most commonly occurring parasites in 1971 were compared with the same species observed during the same month and sampling sites in 1997-2000. Multivariate community analysis of juvenile English sole parasites supported the suggestion that the 1971 parasite data were representative of the early-1970s time period. Four of the

Prevalence, Distribution, and Risk Factors Associated With Macracanthorhynchus ingens Infections In Raccoons From Ontario, Canada.

Macracanthorhynchus ingens is an acanthocephalan parasite commonly found in raccoons ( Procyon lotor) in the United States. Little is known, however, about the prevalence and distribution of M. ingens in raccoons in Canada. Our objective was to investigate the prevalence, distribution, and risk factors associated with M. ingens infection in raccoons in southern Ontario, Canada. Raccoon carcasses submitted to the Ontario/Nunavut region of the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative for post mortem from June 2016 to January 2017 (n = 380) were examined for the presence of gastrointestinal helminths

A New Species of the Acanthocephalan Genus Filisoma (Cavisomidae) from Perciform Fishes in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

BACKGROUND: Twelve species of Filisoma Van Cleave, 1928 are recognized parasitizing tropical and subtropical fish. Four of these species were described from kyphosid fish and it has been suggested that a co-speciation may have occurred among species of Kyphosus Lacepède, 1801 and Filisoma, which could provide valuable information about the evolution history of this host-parasite system. PURPOSE: During a survey of the helminth fauna of Kyphosus sectatrix (Linnaeus, 1758) and Kyphosus incisor (Cuvier, 1831) (Kyphosidae Jordan, 1887) off Rio de Janeiro coast, a new species of Filisoma was found
