A retrospective study was designed to define the independent determinants of late results in 282 consecutive patients operated on for mitral stenosis between 1978 and 1985. A total of 25 variables were investigated by multivariate discriminant analysis for their possible influence on symptomatic outcome, subsequent reoperation, postoperative thromboembolism, and death. A retrospective study was performed to compare local treatment approaches for 108 treated breasts in 105 patients with Stage I or II breast cancer. Medical and surgical advances have improved the outlook for infants with symptomatic coarctation of the aorta. To help predict the clinical course of individual patients and to aid in individualizing their treatment, a 10-year experience with this condition was reviewed. PURPOSE: To determine the long-term efficacy and cosmetic results of accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) by reviewing our institution's experience.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 199 patients with early-stage breast cancer were treated prospectively with adjuvant APBI after lumpectomy using interstitial brachytherapy. All patients had negative margins, 82% had Stage I disease, median tumor size was 1.1 cm, and 12% had positive lymph nodes. The median follow-up for surviving patients was 8.6 years. INTRODUCTION: Living donation in adult liver transplantation (LDLTx) is an important resource because of the waiting list growth. We started a living donor program to overcome the shortage of cadaveric sources.
PATIENTS: From May 2001 to May 2003, 36 patients underwent LDLTx: 27 received a right lobe, 8 received a left lobe, and 1 received segments II and III.

Actuarial analysis of survival after first-stage palliative reconstructive operation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome has revealed a high out-of-hospital attrition rate over the first 18 months to 2 years postoperatively. Eighty-five patients operated on before January 1976 have survived at least 30 days after insertion of a valved external conduit by the venous ventricle (usually the right) and the pulmonary arteries as a part of the repair of their congenital heart disease.
