Cognitive ability in childhood predicts adolescent structural and functional brain development: A longitudinal study.

General cognitive ability in childhood has been linked to differences in brain structure and connectivity in numerous studies. However, longitudinal examinations of links between early cognitive ability and multimodal brain development are limited. Leveraging longitudinal data from 10,495 participants of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, we examined whether childhood cognitive ability was associated with differences in longitudinal development of gray and white matter structure and resting state functional connectivity (rsFC). Linear mixed-effects models tested associations bet

Outgroup friendships and social influence in the development of adolescent attitudes toward secondary outgroups.

Having outgroup friends not only improves attitudes toward the (primary) outgroup but potentially also toward other (secondary) outgroups. This "secondary transfer effect" is attributed to the generalization of intergroup contact, but it may also reflect social influence as friends shape each other's outgroup attitudes. In three studies (two empirical and one simulation), we applied stochastic actor-oriented models to longitudinal network data representing friendships between adolescents. Across Studies 1 (n = 812) and 2 (n = 2,559), we found no evidence that having more primary outgroup frien

Editorial: Transdiagnostic approaches to child and adolescent mental health-Integrating development, dimensions, and mechanisms.

Co-occurrence of child and adolescent neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions is the rule rather than the exception, yet translating this insight into shared frameworks and clinical practice remains challenging. In this Editorial, we are pleased to introduce the 26 papers included in the 2026 Special Issue of JCPP Advances. This Special Issue aimed to advance our understanding of transdiagnostic mechanisms, dimensions, and practices in child and adolescent mental health, and includes original articles, reviews, commentaries, and an editorial perspective. Collectively, these articles il

Development of an Intervention for Managing Adolescent Anxiety Using Community-Based Participatory Methods: Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Youth of color who live in urban communities face disproportionate anxiety levels due to systemic inequities, including exposure to violence, economic instability, and neighborhood disadvantage. Despite increased need, these communities often lack accessible mental health interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study presents a protocol for an anxiety prevention intervention developed through a community-based participatory approach that is tailored to urban youth of color using community-based participatory research methods. METHODS: The intervention, co-developed with a community partne

Early Life Adversity Predicts Reduced Hippocampal Volume in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

PURPOSE: Cross-sectional studies in adults have demonstrated associations between early life adversity (ELA) and reduced hippocampal volume, but the timing of these effects is not clear. The present study sought to examine whether ELA predicts changes in hippocampal volume over time in a large sample of early adolescents. METHODS: The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study provides a large dataset of tabulated neuroimaging, youth-reported adverse experiences, and parent-reported financial adversity from a sample of children around the United States. Linear mixed effects modeling was use

Lower androgen levels promote abnormal cartilage development in female patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a disease characterized by changes in the three-dimensional structure of the spine. Studies have shown that the development of AIS might be associated with genetic, biomechanics, endocrine factors and abnormal bone or cartilage development. METHODS: Blood samples collected from 301 female patients (161 females with AIS and 140 females without AIS) were used for genotyping. Forty-eight serum samples from 161 females with AIS and 40 serum samples from 140 females without AIS were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). We al

Exposure to domestic violence and identity development among adolescent university students in South Africa.

This study examined the relationship between exposure to domestic violence and identity development in a sample of 108 undergraduate students with an average age of 18.7 yr. from University of Limpopo in South Africa. There were more women (n = 64; 58.7%) in the study than men (n = 45; 41.3%). Participants were classified into high and low domestic violence exposure groups on the basis of a median split in physical violence scores from the Child Exposure to Domestic Violence Scale (CEDV). Exposure was then compared with identity development as measured by the Ochse and Plug Erikson scale. The

Preventing the development of body issues in adolescent girls through intervention with their mothers.

The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of the Healthy Girls Project, an ecologically based, targeted prevention program aimed at discouraging the development of body-related problems in middle-school girls via an intervention directly and only with their mothers. Participants were 31 seventh- and eighth-grade girls and their mothers. The empirically based intervention comprised a series of 4 weekly workshops that had both interactive psychoeducational components and behavioral components (e.g., homework to do with daughters, modeling activities). The study design was experimental,

A review of positive youth development programs that promote adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

PURPOSE: Positive youth development (PYD) may be a promising strategy for promoting adolescent health. A systematic review of the published data was conducted to identify and describe PYD programs that improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health. METHODS: Eight databases were searched for articles about PYD programs published between 1985 and 2007. Programs included met the following criteria: fostered at least one of 12 PYD goals in multiple socialization domains (i.e., family, school, community) or addressed two or more goals in at least one socialization domain; allocated at least ha

Translating models of antisocial behavioral development into efficacious intervention policy to prevent adolescent violence.

Adolescent chronic antisocial behavior is costly but concentrated in a relatively small number of individuals. The search for effective preventive interventions draws from empirical findings of three kinds of gene-by-environment interactions: (1) parenting behaviors mute the impact of genes; (2) genes alter the impact of traumatic environmental experiences such as physical abuse and peer social rejection; and (3) individuals and environments influence each other in a dynamic developmental cascade. Thus, environmental interventions that focus on high-risk youth may prove effective. The Fast Tra

Prenatal and adolescent exposure to tobacco smoke modulates the development of white matter microstructure.

Prenatal exposure to maternal smoking has been linked to cognitive and auditory processing deficits in offspring. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that exposure to nicotine disrupts neurodevelopment during gestation and adolescence, possibly by disrupting the trophic effects of acetylcholine. Given recent clinical and preclinical work suggesting that neurocircuits that support auditory processing may be particularly vulnerable to developmental disruption by nicotine, we examined white matter microstructure in 67 adolescent smokers and nonsmokers with and without prenatal exposure to mater

Reversing sex steroid deficiency and optimizing skeletal development in the adolescent with gonadal failure.

During puberty, the acquisition of skeletal mass and areal bone mineral density (BMD) mainly reflects an increase in bone size (length and perimeters) and not true volumetric BMD. Sexual dimorphism in bone mass and areal BMD is also explained by differences in bone size (longer and wider bones in males) and not by differences in volumetric BMD. Androgens stimulate skeletal growth by activation of the androgen receptor, whereas estrogens (following aromatization of androgens and stimulation of estrogen receptors) have a biphasic effect on skeletal growth during puberty. Recent evidence from cli
