Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite with worldwide distribution. The accurate detection of this zoonotic agent in cats and other hosts has public health importance. Blood samples from 89 domestic cats were tested for antibodies to T. gondii using 2 commercial agglutination test kits, an indirect (IHAT; Toxo-HAI FUMOUZE; Fumouze Diagnostics) and a modified (MAT; Toxoscreen DA; bioMérieux) agglutination test. The results of three tests used for the rapid diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis (IM) were compared with those of Epstein-Barr virus-specific serology. The sensitivities ranged from 15 to 33% in children under 13 years of age and from 59 to 81% in patients over 13 years. The specificities ranged from 86 to 100% in both age groups. These tests have a poor sensitivity for the diagnosis of IM, particularly in children.

A prospective study using a Latex particle agglutination test for the detection of bacterial antigens in CSF has been carried out in 91 patients in Kamuzu Central Hospital, Malawi. An excretory-secretory (ES) antigen was extracted from supernatants of cell cultures infected with Toxoplasma gondii, purified and controlled according to current standards. In 638 volunteers, the correlation with fluorescent antibody was 94.2% and no false positive skin tests were noted. The skin test did not transform an originally negative serological test into a positive one.
