[Prevalence of aggressive periodontitis in adolescents and young adults from Vale do Paraíba].

The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of localized and generalized aggressive periodontitis, as well as of incidental attachment loss, in a population of adolescents and young adults aging between 15 and 25 years (19.4 +/- 3.44) from Vale do Paraíba - SP, who searched for general dental care at the Department of Dentistry, University of Taubaté, São Paulo. Six hundred patients, 244 male and 356 female subjects, were included in the studied sample. The periodontal status of this population was evaluated by measuring the depth of periodontal pockets, as well as attachment

Local versus systemic adjunctive antibiotic therapy in 28 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Although the use of systemic antibiotics has been studied in patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (formerly rapidly progressive periodontitis), the use of adjunctive tetracycline fibers in these patients has not been reported. The purpose of the present study was to compare the clinical response of local versus systemic antibiotic treatment as adjuncts to scaling and root planing in patients with GAgP. METHODS: After initial therapy and full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP), 30 patients were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 antibiotic treatment groups. Probing depth (

Endodontic infection caused by localized aggressive periodontitis: a case report and bacteriologic evaluation.

A rare case of a periodontally induced endodontic lesion in a systemically healthy subject of 28 years is described. The patient, having presented with severe attachment loss on the palatal and distal aspects of his maxillary right second premolar, was diagnosed with localized aggressive periodontitis. He had never received periodontal treatment. The tooth was nonvital and showed all signs of symptomatic apical periodontitis. It was also free of any restoration. All clinical findings clearly suggested that the endodontic problem was caused by the aggressive periodontal disease. Bacteriologic s

Estimation of salivary tumor necrosis factor-alpha in chronic and aggressive periodontitis patients.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a chronic bacterial infection characterized by persistent inflammation, connective tissue breakdown and alveolar bone destruction mediated by pro-inflammatory mediators. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is an important pro-inflammatory mediator that produced causes destruction of periodontal tissues. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to estimate the salivary TNF-α in chronic and aggressive periodontitis and control participants and further correlate the levels with clinical parameter such as gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), probing pocket depth (PPD)

Artificial neural networks for the diagnosis of aggressive periodontitis trained by immunologic parameters.

There is neither a single clinical, microbiological, histopathological or genetic test, nor combinations of them, to discriminate aggressive periodontitis (AgP) from chronic periodontitis (CP) patients. We aimed to estimate probability density functions of clinical and immunologic datasets derived from periodontitis patients and construct artificial neural networks (ANNs) to correctly classify patients into AgP or CP class. The fit of probability distributions on the datasets was tested by the Akaike information criterion (AIC). ANNs were trained by cross entropy (CE) values estimated between

Influence of IL-6 haplotypes on clinical and inflammatory response in aggressive periodontitis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the inflammatory response in aggressive periodontitis (AgP) patients after periodontal therapy and associate these changes to subjects' interleukin-6 (IL-6) genetic variants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve non-smoking UK Caucasian patients with AgP were selected based on their IL6 haplotypes (six haplotype positive and six haplotype negative based on polymorphisms rs 2069827 and rs 2069825) and underwent full mouth non-surgical periodontal therapy, followed by open flap surgery. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and peripheral blood samples we

Proteome analysis of proteins related to aggressive periodontitis combined with neutrophil chemotaxis dysfunction.

AIM: Some patients suffering from aggressive periodontitis (Ag-P) also display neutrophil chemotaxis dysfunction. In this study, we attempted to identify the proteins involved in Ag-P associated with neutrophil chemotaxis dysfunction using proteome analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A two-dimensional fluorescence difference gel electrophoresis system was used to detect differences in protein expression between neutrophils from four patients suffering from Ag-P combined with neutrophil chemotaxis dysfunction and those from four controls. Moreover, the mRNA levels of the proteins identified by the

Increased systemic elastase and C-reactive protein in aggressive periodontitis (CLOI-D-00160R2).

The inflammatory mediators, serum elastase and C-reactive protein (CRP), are associated with an increased risk for coronary heart disease. Thus, the aim of this study is to compare systemic inflammatory mediators in periodontally healthy controls (C), patients with untreated aggressive (AgP) and chronic (ChP) periodontitis. C [periodontal pocket probing depth (PPD)  <3.6 or <5 mm without bleeding (BOP), BOP < 10%], ChP (PDD ≥ 3.6 mm and probing attachment loss ≥5 mm at >30% of sites; age >35 years), and AgP (clinically healthy; PDD ≥ 3.6 mm at >30% of sites, bone loss ≥50% at ≥2 teeth; age ≤35

Immunohistochemical analysis of inflammatory infiltrate in aggressive and chronic periodontitis: a comparative study.

This immunohistochemical study evaluated the inflammatory infiltrate with its cluster differentiation markers (CD 4, CD 8, CD 20, and CD 68) in aggressive and chronic periodontitis gingival tissues in order to identify the specific cell distribution. Twenty-seven human gingival biopsies were obtained and analyzed. Fourteen patients were suffering from chronic periodontitis and six from aggressive periodontitis; seven patients with healthy gingiva were included as the control group. The specimens were immunohistochemically stained for anti-CD 4 (T helper cells), anti-CD 8 (T cytotoxic/suppresso

A 3' UTR transition within DEFB1 is associated with chronic and aggressive periodontitis.

Periodontal diseases are complex inflammatory diseases and affect up to 20% of the worldwide population. An unbalanced reaction of the immune system toward microbial pathogens is considered as the key factor in the development of periodontitis. Defensins have a strong antimicrobial function and are important contributors of the immune system toward maintaining health. Here, we present the first systematic association study of DEFB1. Using a haplotype-tagging single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) approach, including described promoter SNPs of DEFB1, we investigated the associations of the select

Quantitative measures of aggressive periodontitis show substantial heritability and consistency with traditional diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) research nearly always classifies subjects into traditional discrete categories of localized or generalized, based upon degree of attachment loss (AL) and types of affected teeth. Since AL is continuous and quantitative, however, useful information is lost. We developed quantitative measures of AgP, compared these to traditional methods, and estimated heritabilities in families. METHODS: We examined 237 healthy, 169 localized AgP, and 204 generalized AgP subjects. We used the site of maximum AL of each tooth to calculate means for each subject for di

Evaluation of human leukocyte N-formylpeptide receptor (FPR1) SNPs in aggressive periodontitis patients.

OBJECTIVES: Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a peripheral vascular disorder that frequently occurs in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Although therapeutic heating seems reasonable given that RP is elicited by cold stimuli, the effects of heating are still unclear. We examined the effects of heating applied on various body parts in SSc patients with RP of fingers. METHODS: Fourteen SSc patients heated their neck, elbows, and wrists with disposable heating pads for 1 week each. The visual analogue scale (VAS) for RP during each heating period was compared with that of each 1-week pre-treatment interval.

Lactoferrin iron levels are reduced in saliva of patients with localized aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) is associated with localized aggressive periodontal disease in juveniles (LAgP). Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding salivary protein that has been shown to kill Aa in its iron-free form (apo) and reduce binding to host cells in its iron-saturated form (halo). However, recent in vitro studies show that LF does not kill clinical isolates of Aa, and LF with reduced levels of bound iron does not interfere with its attachment. These findings suggest that colonization of Aa may occur more readily in an environment containing LF with low iron lev

Three case reports of aggressive periodontitis associated with Porphyromonas gingivalis in younger patients.

The terms 'early onset periodontitis' (EOP) and 'juvenile periodontitis' (JP) were replaced by that of 'aggressive periodontitis' in a recent international workshop for the classification of periodontal diseases and conditions. The chief etiologic agent for aggressive periodontitis is considered to be Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in localized juvenile periodontitis. Porphyromonas gingivalis is also mentioned as the etiologic agent of the aggressive periodontitis, although to date its role remains questionable. This communication describes three cases of aggressive periodontitis found t

Polymorphisms of TLR4 but not CD14 are associated with a decreased risk of aggressive periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: To study whether there is an association between the frequency of functional polymorphisms in the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and cluster differentiation 14 (CD14) genes and periodontitis. METHODOLOGY: Genotyping for the TLR4 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) Asp299Gly, Thr399Ile and the CD14 SNPs -159 and -1359 was completed for subjects with periodontal disease compared with control subjects. Two disease populations were investigated: 73 subjects with aggressive periodontitis (AgP; 28 males, 45 females) and 95 males with chronic periodontitis (CP). The TLR4 and CD14 polymorp

Aggressive periodontal destruction and herpes zoster in a suspected AIDS patient.

An unusual case of spontaneous and rapidly destructive lesions involving the periodontal structures is described in a 54 year old, bi-sexual patients suspected of having AIDS. Concomitant with the periodontal breakdown, the patient developed a severe case of Herpes Zoster involving the area of the face innervated by the 5th cranial nerve. The dermal lesions involved the face, nose, eyes and scalp. Similar lesions were noted on the gingival and palatal mucosa on the same side of the jaw as the skin lesions. The differences between this type of periodontal destruction and more conventional forms
