Performance of a CO2 sorbent for indoor air cleaning applications: Effects of environmental conditions, sorbent aging, and adsorption of co-occurring formaldehyde.

Indoor air cleaning systems that incorporate CO2 sorbent materials enable HVAC load shifting and efficiency improvements. This study developed a bench-scale experimental system to evaluate the performance of a sorbent under controlled operation conditions. A thermostatic holder containing 3.15 g sorbent was connected to a manifold that delivered CO2 -enriched air at a known temperature and relative humidity (RH). The air stream was also enriched with 0.8-2.1 ppm formaldehyde. The CO2 concentration was monitored in real-time upstream and downstream of the sorbent, and integrated formaldehyde sa

Effect of Air Exposure Time Under Room-Temperature Conditions on the Performance of Chemical Heat Blankets Intended for Use in Prehospital Accidental Hypothermia.

IntroductionAccidental hypothermia increases mortality in patients with traumatic injury, making hypothermia management essential in prehospital trauma care. Chemical heat blankets are commonly used for this purpose. These blankets require time to get warm, with agitation often used to accelerate the exothermic reaction. Many search and rescue teams use chemical heat blankets, but optimal activation of the blankets remains uncertain. This study investigated how varying oxygen exposure durations affect the thermal performance of these blankets to guide their optimal use in search and rescue sce

Air pollution and meteorological conditions significantly contribute to the worsening of allergic conjunctivitis: a regional 20-city, 5-year study in Northeast China.

This study is the first to explore the potential associations among allergic conjunctivitis (AC), air pollution, and meteorological conditions in Northeast China. Data of meteorology, ambient atmospheric pollutants, and the incidence of allergic conjunctivitis (IAC) in prefecture-level cities between the years 2014 and 2018 are analyzed. The results show an increasing trend in the AC of average growth rate per annum 7.6%, with the highest incidence in the provincial capitals. The IAC is positively correlated with atmospheric pollutants (i.e., PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO2, NO2, and O3) and meteorologic

[Using Multiple Linear Regression Method to Evaluate the Impact of Meteorological Conditions and Control Measures on Air Quality in Beijing During APEC 2014].

Meteorological conditions have important impact on the diffusion and transport of air pollutants, thus separating and quantifying the impact of meteorological factors is a prerequisite for evaluation of air pollution control measures. Using observation data on SO2, NO, NO2, NOx, CO, PM2.5, PM1, and PM10 as well as meteorological factors at the Chaoyang site, an urban site in Beijing, we evaluated the impact of meteorological conditions and control measures on air quality in Beijing during APEC 2014 (from 15 October to 30 November, 2014) by the multiple linear regression method. The simulation

Multifactorial Analysis Identifies Conditions for Robust HCoV-OC43 Replication in Primary Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells Cultured at Air-Liquid Interface.

Air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures recapitulate key features of the airway epithelium by driving basal cell differentiation into ciliated, club, and goblet cells and by generating a functional mucus barrier, thereby representing a highly relevant model of the human respiratory tract. Using a reduced factorial Design of Experiments (DoE) methodology, we simultaneously investigated the effects of seven variables on human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43) replication in air-liquid interface (ALI)-cultured primary human bronchial epithelial cells (pHBECs) to identify robust conditions that support inf

Large eddy simulation of sneeze plumes and particles in a poorly ventilated outdoor air condition: A case study of the University of Houston main campus.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many previous studies using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have focused on the dynamics of air masses, which are believed to be the carriers of respiratory diseases, in enclosed indoor environments. Although outdoor air may seem to provide smaller exposure risks, it may not necessarily offer adequate ventilation that varies with different micro-climate settings. To comprehensively assess the fluid dynamics in outdoor environments and the efficiency of outdoor ventilation, we simulated the outdoor transmission of a sneeze plume in "hot spots" or

Efficient suilysin-mediated invasion and apoptosis in porcine respiratory epithelial cells after streptococcal infection under air-liquid interface conditions.

Streptococci may colonize the epithelium in the airways and other entry sites. While local infection often remains asymptomatic, severe or even fatal diseases occur when streptococci become invasive and spread to different sites in the infected host. We have established porcine respiratory air-liquid interface cultures (ALI) from the porcine lung to analyze the interaction of streptococci with their primary target cells. As representative of the streptococcal family we chose Streptococcus suis (S. suis) that is not only a major swine respiratory pathogen but can also infect humans. Suilysin, a

A pilot study using scripted ventilation conditions to identify key factors affecting indoor pollutant concentration and air exchange rate in a residence.

A pilot study was conducted using an occupied, single-family test house in Columbus, OH, to determine whether a script-based protocol could be used to obtain data useful in identifying the key factors affecting air-exchange rate (AER) and the relationship between indoor and outdoor concentrations of selected traffic-related air pollutants. The test script called for hourly changes to elements of the test house considered likely to influence air flow and AER, including the position (open or closed) of each window and door and the operation (on/off) of the furnace, air conditioner, and ceiling f

City-level meteorological conditions modify the relationships between exposure to multiple air pollutants and the risk of pediatric hand, foot, and mouth disease in the Sichuan Basin, China.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have examined the effects of city-level meteorological conditions on the associations between meteorological factors and hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) risk. However, evidence that city-level meteorological conditions modify air pollutant-HFMD associations is lacking. METHODS: For each of the 17 cities in the Sichuan Basin, we obtained estimates of the relationship between exposures to multiple air pollutants and childhood HFMD risk by using a unified distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM). Multivariate meta-regression models were used to identify the effects

Characteristics of roadside air pollution in Korean metropolitan city (Daegu) over last 5 to 6 years: temporal variations, standard exceedances, and dependence on meteorological conditions.

The present study performed a roadside data analysis to provide baseline data for exploring associations between environmental exposure to four gaseous pollutants and health effects on residents living near roadways. The yearly roadside concentrations of CO and SO2 showed a well-defined decreasing trend, whereas those of NO2 and O3 exhibited the reverse trend. In most cases, the diurnal trends of the roadside concentrations were well-defined for all seasons, plus the daytime concentrations were higher than the nighttime concentrations. In contrast to the other target pollutants, the daytime O3

Waiting to inhale: An exploratory review of conditions that may predispose to pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure in persons exposed to household air pollution in low- and middle-income countries.

The health effects of exposure to household air pollution are gaining international attention. While the bulk of the known mortality estimates due to these exposures are derived from respiratory conditions, there is growing evidence of adverse cardiovascular health effects. Pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure are common conditions in low- and middle-income countries whose etiology may be related to common exposures in these regions such as schistosomiasis, human immunodeficiency virus, tuberculosis infections and other causes. While little is known of the interplay between exposure
