On the relation between seasonal synoptic circulation types and spatial air quality characteristics in Athens, Greece.

The impact of weather on air pollution was examined and evaluated for the city of Athens, Greece. We used an objectively defined synoptic classification scheme consisting of six summer and eight winter circulation types. This scheme was established using a combination of both factor and cluster analysis during 1954-1999. Surface and isobaric levels of 850 hPa data were used. Factor analysis combined with cluster analysis was used to derive circulation types based on surface meteorological data for the period 1954-1999 in Athens and on surface pressure grid data. The city was divided into three

Characterisation and evaluation of the emissions from the combustion of Orimulsion-400, coal and heavy fuel oil in a thermoelectric power plant.

An experimental campaign was carried out in a thermoelectric power plant in Southern Italy in order to evaluate the emissions released during the utilisation of three different fuels, Orimulsion-400, coal and heavy fuel oil (HFO) with high content of sulphur. Macropollutant concentrations in the exhaust gases were recorded by the continuous monitoring system and the Institute on Atmospheric Pollution of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) carried out samplings and analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and Polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDF),

On-road measurement of particle emission in the exhaust plume of a diesel passenger car.

Particle size distributions were measured under real world dilution conditions in the exhaust plume of a diesel passenger car closely followed by a mobile laboratory on a high speed test track. Under carefully controlled conditions the exhaust plume was continuously sampled and analyzed inside the mobile laboratory. Exhaust particle size distribution data were recorded together with exhaust gas concentrations, i.e., CO, CO2, and NO(x), and compared to data obtained from the same vehicle tested on a chassis dynamometer. Good agreement was found for the soot mode particles which occurred at a ge

Environmental justice and air quality in Santiago de Chile.

Objective The metropolitan region in Santiago, Chile has an air quality problem. However, the larger issue may lie in the inequities created by the distribution of the air pollution. Methods To assess the inequities created by the spatial differences in air pollution, the author analyzed fine particle pollution levels for 2008-2011 at monitoring stations throughout the region. The author also compared air quality data with socioeconomic data. Results The areas of the Santiago metropolitan region with the worst air quality have lower socioeconomic levels. Pollution in these areas reaches levels

Noninvasive Measurement of Tongue Pressure and Its Correlation with Swallowing and Respiration.

Tongue pressure plays a critical role in the oral and pharyngeal stages of swallowing, contributing considerably to bolus formation and manipulation as well as to safe transporting of food from the mouth to the stomach. Smooth swallowing relies not only on effective coordination of respiration and pharynx motions but also on sufficient tongue pressure. Conventional methods of measuring tongue pressure involve attaching a pressure sheet to the hard palate to monitor the force exerted by the tongue tip against the hard palate. In this study, an air bulb was inserted in the anterior oral cavity t

Changing the role of the air traffic controller: how will free flight affect memory for spatial events?

At present, air traffic controllers (ATCOs) exercise strict control over routing authority for aircraft movement in airspace. The onset of a free flight environment, however, may well result in a dramatic change to airspace jurisdictions, with aircraft movements for the large part being governed by aircrew, not ATCOs. The present study examined the impact of such changes on spatial memory for recent and non-recent locations of aircraft represented on a visual display. The experiment contrasted present conditions, in which permission for manoeuvres is granted by ATCOs, with potential free fligh

Berlin Heart EXCOR Ventricular Assist Device: Multilayer Membrane Rupture in a Pediatric Patient.

A 2-year-old child was implanted with an Berlin Heart EXCOR Ventricular Assist Device (Berlin Heart, Berlin, Germany) as a bridge to heart transplantation for idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. At postoperative day 296, a significant reduction of membrane movement was observed. The device was explanted and tested on a hydronumerical circulation simulator. Findings suggested that the integrity of the multilayered membrane had been compromised. This was confirmed by a computed tomography scan of the device. The computed tomography evidenced a detachment of the 3-layered membrane, with a thinner,

Brain Shift during Staged Deep Brain Stimulation for Movement Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a routine neurosurgical procedure utilized to treat various movement disorders including Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), and dystonia. Treatment efficacy is dependent on stereotactic accuracy of lead placement into the deep brain target of interest. However, brain shift attributed to pneumocephalus can introduce unpredictable inaccuracies during DBS lead placement. This study aimed to determine whether intracranial air is associated with brain shift in patients undergoing staged DBS surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 4

The relationship between ventilation and oxygen consumption in man is the same during both moderate exercise and shivering.

1. Four naïve subjects clothed in protective suits were immersed up to the neck in water on twenty-two occasions, the minimum skin temperature was 20 degrees C and the average skin temperature 26 degrees C. Subjects at first rested, initially demonstrating an increase in thermal muscular tone which did not lead to perceptible limb movements. Later, while resting, visible shivering with small unco-ordinated limb movements supervened. The subjects then exercised while still immersed by stationary cycling. 2. Steady-state minute oxygen consumption (VO2) and minute ventilation (VE) were measured o

Management of residual pleural space after lung resection: fully controllable paralysis of the diaphragm through continuous phrenic nerve block.

BACKGROUND: Residual pleural space after lung resection associated with air leak is a challenging issue, potentially causing serious complications. We report a new, postoperative technique to reduce the pleural space, inducing a controlled and reversible paralysis of the diaphragm. METHODS: Ten patients were enrolled (7 lobectomies, 2 bilobectomy, 1 wedge resection). Inclusion criteria were: digitally detected air flow >200 mL/min at post-op day 3, presence of empty pleural space at chest x-ray, absence of restrictive lung disease, absence of known arrhythmias. A 22G nerve-block catheter was

Absence of nasal air flow during pursed lips breathing. The soft palate mechanisms.

During pursed-lips (PL) breathing, even though expiratory air-flow resistance is probably higher than during nasal breathing, there is no air flow through the nose. This should imply an active mechanism that prevents air from escaping through the nares. In 6 patients with chronic obstructive lung disease (FEV1/FVC 34.5 +/- 11.8%; mean +/- 1 SD), nasal resistance averaged 2.6 +/- 0.5 cm H2O.L-1.s-1, whereas translabial resistance (during PL expiration) was 5.7 +/- 0.7 cm H2O.L-1.s-1 (p less than 0.005 by paired t test). Nasal air flow during PL expiration was zero. In all patients, cineradiogra

[Eleven-Cities skating marathon and the windchill factor].

The weather conditions during the 15th Eleven Cities ice skating marathon (200 kilometers) in Friesland (the Netherlands) on 4 January, 1997, were better than predicted. For measurement of the windchill factor the Steadman scale is preferred to the Siple and Passel scale. For ice skaters the windchill factor is lower than for the spectators, due to the drag effect.

Wind Tunnel Analysis of the Airflow through Insect-Proof Screens and Comparison of Their Effect When Installed in a Mediterranean Greenhouse.

The present work studies the effect of three insect-proof screens with different geometrical and aerodynamic characteristics on the air velocity and temperature inside a Mediterranean multi-span greenhouse with three roof vents and without crops, divided into two independent sectors. First, the insect-proof screens were characterised geometrically by analysing digital images and testing in a low velocity wind tunnel. The wind tunnel tests gave screen discharge coefficient values of Cd,φ of 0.207 for screen 1 (10 × 20 threads·cm(-2); porosity φ = 35.0%), 0.151 for screen 2 (13 × 30 threads·cm(-

[Numerical simulation study on effects of ambient temperature on airflow in the nasal cavity].

OBJECTIVE: To study the aerodynamics of the normal human nasal cavity under different ambient temperatures. METHODS: Based on CT scanning, a model of a healthy adult's nasal cavity was established using computational fluid dynamics software from Fluent. Airflow in this model was simulated and calculated at ambient temperatures of 0 °C, 24 °C, and 37 °C during periodic breathing. RESULTS: Ambient temperature only had an impact on the temperature in the nasal cavity during the inspiratory phase, and the temperature distribution was not symmetrical in the inspiratory acceleration and decelerati

Numerical and experimental studies of CCl4 destruction in a dump incinerator.

We undertook numerical and experimental studies to develop a better incineration method for the destruction of CCl4. A phenomenological model for the turbulent reaction of CCl4, including a flame inhibition feature, has been successfully incorporated into a commercial code, simulating the incineration processes of this compound. The gaseous flow solution was obtained using SIMPLEST, a derivative of Patankar's SIMPLE algorithm, with a k-epsilon turbulence model. A modified fast chemistry turbulent reaction model was developed to describe the flame inhibition due to the presence of CCl4, conside

Discharge profiles of abducens, accessory abducens, and orbicularis oculi motoneurons during reflex and conditioned blinks in alert cats.

The discharge profiles of identified abducens, accessory abducens, and orbicularis oculi motoneurons have been recorded extra- and intracellularly in alert behaving cats during spontaneous, reflexively evoked, and classically conditioned eyelid responses. The movement of the upper lid and the electromyographic activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle also were recorded. Animals were conditioned by short, weak air puffs or 350-ms tones as conditioned stimuli (CS) and long, strong air puffs as unconditioned stimulus (US) using both trace and delayed conditioning paradigms. Motoneurons were ident

Attachment discs of the diving bell spider Argyroneta aquatica.

To adhere their silk threads for the construction of webs and to fix the dragline, spiders produce attachment discs of piriform silk. Uniquely, the aquatic spider Argyroneta aquatica spends its entire life cycle underwater. Therefore, it has to glue its attachment discs to substrates underwater. Here we show that Argyroneta aquatica applies its thread anchors within an air layer around the spinnerets maintained by superhydrophobic setae. During spinning, symmetric movements of the spinnerets ensure retaining air in the contact area. The flat structure of the attachment discs is thought to faci

Physiologic and pathologic belching.

Accumulation of air in the stomach increases gastric volume, which activates receptors in the gastric wall. A reflex is initiated, leading to relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, upward movement of the air through the esophagus, and finally passage through the upper esophageal sphincter, during which an audible belch can sometimes be heard. Excessive belching is often reported in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and functional dyspepsia. Often other symptoms are predominant, and these should be treated first. Sometimes patients present with excessive belching as an isolat

[Laryngeal movements during wind instruments play].

Historically, the concern of wind instrumentalists has been diaphragm control and embouchure. Laryngeal movement during "blow" has been overlooked or neglected by wind musicians. It has been said that musical tone has to be produced by the resonances of the player's air column by opening his larynx during blow. In the present study, fiberscopic observations of the larynx during blow revealed that musical tones were played with adducted vocal cords. Narrowed glottis appeared to control the airflow of the blow. Persons who could not make musical tone blew with open glottis. Vibrato was also made
