Exploring the Influence of Maternal Behavioural Activation and Inhibition on Predicting Fetal Alcohol Exposure.

Background: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can cause adverse physical and neurocognitive fetal development. Numerous underlying mechanisms of PAE-risk have been hypothesized; however, these have predominantly focused on health-, interpersonal-, and social-related factors. Evidence suggests that stable personality traits, such as behavioral activation (BA) and behavioral inhibition (BI) may contribute toward risk of alcohol misuse. We posit that BA and BI may therefore increase risk of PAE. The potential of BA and BI to underpin both pre- and during-pregnancy alcohol use was thus explored in a

Bariatric surgery and alcohol and substance use: A case-control survey study.

PURPOSE: Studies suggest alcohol and/or other substance misuse may develop after bariatric surgery (BS), but findings are not consistent or conclusive. PROCEDURES: This cross-sectional online survey investigated alcohol and other substance use, via a modified version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, before and after bariatric surgery, compared to a non-bariatric surgery sample. Data were anonymously collected via Qualtrics from adults who reported alcohol or substance use (BS, n = 328; non-BS, n = 292). FINDINGS: Problematic alcohol, opioid, amphetamine, and cannabis use wer

A comparison of recovery benefits associated with participation in SMART Recovery, AA, both SMART and AA, or neither, following a new alcohol use disorder recovery attempt.

BACKGROUND: Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART Recovery or "SMART") is an internationally known "second-wave" addiction recovery mutual-help organization that has grown over several decades. Despite this, little is known empirically about who uses SMART and how they fare on important alcohol-specific outcomes over time relative to individuals using more established options such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), or indeed those who utilize both SMART and AA, or neither. Greater knowledge could deepen understanding of the clinical and public utility of SMART in its own right and inform cli…

Short-term outcomes in patients attending a primary care-based addiction shared care program.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate patient outcomes in an addiction shared care program that is managed by family physicians working in a primary care s … nt decline in the problematic use of cannabis or cocaine. Twenty-two patients (31%) participated in Alcoholics Anonymous or formal addiction treatment. CONCLUSION: Shared care is a promising new strategy for delivering addiction intervention. Further evaluation is warranted, with more complete follow-up and objective outcome measures.

Dual diagnosis in Spain.

Our aim is to describe the current situation regarding the diagnosis and treatment of addiction in a variety of settings in Spain. Four-hundred and twenty-seven physicians known to treat addicted patients in non-private settings were recruited and agreed to participate. A total of 2361 patients were interviewed (92.1%) and data were obtained concerning gender, age, work, educational level, civil status, addiction diagnosis, type of treatment and psychiatric comorbidit

Coffee, Alcohol, and Artificial Sweeteners Have Temporal Associations with Gastrointestinal Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Various dietary strategies for managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) target mechanisms such as brain-gut interactions, osmotic actions, microbial gas production, and local immune activity. These pathophysiological mechanisms are diverse, making it unclear which foods trigger IBS symptoms for a substantial proportion of patients. AIM: To identify associations between foods and gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS: From the mySymptoms smartphone app, we collected anonymized diaries of food intake and symptoms (abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and gas). We selected diaries that w

This study investigated the effects of the predictors of heavy and moderate alcohol drinking in Japan using nationally representative survey data. METHODS: Anonymous data from the 2013 Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions in Japan were used to compare the predictors of heavy and moderate drinkers with those who abstain. Anonymized data that are resampled from all the survey data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare were o

Alcohol Use, Demographics and Mental Health of Women Using a Digital Peer Support Program.

BACKGROUND: Risky alcohol use is rising among some groups of women. This trend is concerning given their vulnerability to alcohol-related harm arising from biological and socio-cultural factors. Stigma, caregiving responsibilities, and limited childcare often reduce access to traditional treatment. Concurrently, population-wide increases in psychological distress are driving demand for support services. Digital interventions for alcohol use like the Daybreak app may offer accessible, anonymous early intervention, helping to overcome barriers and meet unmet needs. METHODS: Data were analysed f

Bringing it home: community survey of HIV risks to primary sex partners of men and women in alcohol-serving establishments in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent sexual relationships facilitate the spread of HIV infection, and sex with non-primary partners may pose particularly high risks for HIV transmission to primary partners. OBJECTIVE: We examined the sexual and alcohol-related risks associated with sex partners outside of primary relationships among South African men and women in informal drinking establishments. METHODS: Men (n=4959) and women (n=2367) with primary sex partners residing in a Xhosa-speaking South African township completed anonymous surveys. Risk factors for self-reported alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the most common preventable cause of impaired fetal development. The amount of alcohol consumed by expectant mothers varies by country. Studies on the prevalence of alcohol use among pregnant women in Slovakia and the risk factors linked to alcohol consumption during pregnancy are scarce. Similarly lacking are the data regarding pregnant women's awareness of the negative consequences of alcohol use during pregnancy. METHODS: The study comprised women who gave birth at the 2nd Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics between July 1, 2023, and December
