[Epidemiologic survey and serodiagnosis of contagious agalactia of small ruminants in Eastern Algeria].

Contagious agalactia is largely present all over the world and affects most of the African countries. It plays an important economic role in terms of subsequent milk and meat losses. One third of the 15 millions of sheep living in Algeria is present in the Eastern regions. A survey was conducted in order to confirm the existence of the disease and to evaluate the prevalence. A total of 372 sera and 80 milk samples was collected from suspected herds i.e. herds presenting either mastitis and arthritis symptoms or mastitis and keratitis symptoms. It was possible using several serological tests to…

[An anademy of ictero-hemorrhagic leptospirosis in a military group in Algeria (author's transl].

Seven cases of L.I.H. are noted simultaneously in a military group in the suburbs of Algier. It is an anademic by contamination at the same point, without interhuman infection. Only two of these cases have clinical symptoms to permit diagnosis of the others by research of specific antibodies (Immunodiagnosis). Anicteric forms are very frequent. This explains probably failure of diagnosis when epidemiological conditions are realized. This unawareness of leptospiroses is unfortunately a general phenomenon in the world.

Tracing SARS-CoV-2 Evolution in Algeria: Insights from 2020 to 2023.

Genomic surveillance is a cornerstone of pandemic response; it has helped guide public health interventions worldwide. However, North Africa stands between limited surveillance resources and efforts to address the data gap in this strategic geographic region that links sub-Saharan Africa and Europe. In this study, we present the first comprehensive evolutionary investigation of Algerian SARS-CoV-2 genomes, revealing their phylogeny, continuous phylogeography within the country, mutation analysis, and a super-spreading event through haplotype network analysis. We characterized the genetic diver…

Genetic Diversity of Taenia hydatigena (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) in Small Ruminants from Algeria.

PURPOSE: Taenia hydatigena is a globally distributed cestode causing cysticercosis in livestock, particularly in small ruminants. In North Africa, data on its distribution and prevalence are scarce, with no prior studies addressing its molecular epidemiology. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of T. hydatigena in sheep and goats from Algeria. METHODS: A total of 1,002 animals (939 sheep and 63 goats) were examined for the presence of T. hydatigena cysts at the municipal slaughterhouse of Djelfa province between October 2021 and July 2022. Sixty-nine isolates w…

Enterobacterales Producing ESBLs and AmpC in Fresh Vegetables from Tebessa City, Algeria.

This study aimed to evaluate the contamination levels of fresh products by ESBLs-producing Enterobacterales (ESBLs-E) or AmpC-producing Enterobacterales and characterize ESBLs genes. A total of 132 samples (67 vegetables and 65 fruits) were collected from markets in Tebessa, eastern Algeria. Among the samples, 16 third-generation cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales isolates were identified with a prevalence of 19.40% in vegetable samples, while there was no positive finding in fruit samples. Isolates showed resistance to most β-lactams, and all of them displayed multidrug resistance. Phen…

Enterobacter cloacae Complex and CTX-M Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases in Algeria.

We evaluated the β-lactam resistance phenotypes of clinical and environmental strains of the Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) isolated from three Algerian hospitals. The first combination of API 20E, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and hsp60 genetic clustering methodologies were carried out for the identification of ECC strains. Our research showed that API 20E and MALDI TOF MS are satisfactory in genus identification of ECC strains, but sequence-based methods are then necessary to discriminate the species and subspecies levels. Am…

Genetic diversity of Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto infecting humans in western Algeria.

Human cystic echinococcosis is a zoonosis due to the flat worm Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. The disease remains a major public health problem in Northern Africa. Molecular typing enables a better understanding of the parasite circulation from animals to humans. In this study, we investigated the genotypic diversity of 46 Echinococcus granulosus isolates collected from humans in the western part of Algeria by the mean of partial sequences of 4 mitochondrial loci, namely cox1a, cox1b, nd3, and atp6. Nucleotide polymorphism ranges from 0.6 (nd3) to 2.7% (cox1a). Eight alleles had not been …

[Infantile visceral leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum zymodeme MON-24 in Algeria].

In Algeria, visceral leishmaniasis is caused principally by Leishmania infantum MON-1, a common agent of the disease on the edges of the mediterranean basin. Other zymodemes (MON-34 and MON-80) of the same complex have also been isolated from immunologically competent patients. In the present study, the authors report the presence of Leishmania infantum MON-24, the main agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in northern Algeria, in five children with visceral leishmaniasis.

[Human urinary myiasis caused by Fannia canicularis (Diptera, Muscidae) larvae in Algeria].

BACKGROUND: Human urinary myiasis is caused by fly larvae which complete their entire cycle in the human body. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old woman living in a village near Sidi Bel Abbes (Algeria) developed a parasite syndrome caused by Fannia canicularis larvae. About twenty larvae specimens were collected during her hospitalization. Larvae were emitted for 2 weeks after a 6-day treatment with cefotaxime for urinary tract infection. DISCUSSION: Urogenital myiasis is almost always subsequent to conditions of poor personal hygiene. In this case authentic larvae infestation was evidenced. The dia…

Morphological and molecular characterization of ixodid tick vectors in Algeria, North Africa.

Ticks are hematophagous ectoparasites of veterinary and medical importance, serving as vectors for a wide array of pathogens that affect livestock, wildlife, and humans. Given their role in pathogen dissemination, this study aimed to provide an updated molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of hard tick species in Algeria using two mitochondrial markers: Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (Cox1) and the 12S rRNA gene. We analyzed fourteen tick species from the archival collection of the Pasteur Institute of Algeria, originally collected from various provinces across the country. Thes…

Classification of bottled waters marketed and consumed in Algeria through statistical approaches.

The main objective of this work consists of classifying 30 brands of water bottled and marketed in Algeria, based on their physicochemical compositions and their comparison with some foreign brands recognized in their countries or on a world scale. Relevant to this, descriptive statistics, as well as hierarchical ascendant classification (HAC) and principal component analysis (PCA), were used to analyse the data. The results of this study highlighted a similarity between some Algerian brands and other foreign brands of water in terms of mineral content. Moreover, the results obtained by using …
