Adaptive immune cell reactivity to polycaprolactone, alginate, chitosan, and zein nanofibers.

This study explores how nanofiber chemical composition influences human immune cell responses, a key factor in the body's defense against foreign substances. Nanofiber mats composed of polycaprolactone (PCL), alginate (ALG), chitosan (CS), and zein were incubated with both unstimulated and phytohemagglutinin-L-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), as well as immature and mature monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs). We evaluated viability, metabolic activity, and cytokine release of PBMCs while in MoDCs, we assessed surface marker expression, phagocytic capacity, and alloge

Mimicking natural biomineralization enabling biodegradable and highly lipophobic alginate hydrogels.

Microorganisms can induce biomineralization of inorganic ions to form a lipophobic layer on the surface of cave rocks. Mimicking this, we developed and propose a protocol that produces a highly lipophobic hybrid layer of CaCO3 nanoparticles on hydrogel surfaces. This lipophobic layer endows hydrogels with an oil contact angle of 162°, causing oil droplets placed on the surface to bead up and roll off immediately. The lipophobic surface effectively resists staining from lipophilic dyes, and does not adhere to double-sided tapes. A lipophobic layer on hydrogel tubes effectively prevents the adhe

Intestinal delivery of encapsulated bacteriocin peptides in cross-linked alginate microcapsules.

Oral delivery of larger bioactive peptides (>20 amino acids) to the small intestine remains a challenge due to their sensitivity to proteolytic degradation and chemical denaturation during gastrointestinal transit. In this study, we investigated the capacity of crosslinked alginate microcapsules (CLAMs) formed by spray drying to protect Plantaricin EF (PlnEF) (C-EF) in gastric conditions and to dissolve and release PlnEF in the small intestine. PlnEF is an unmodified, two-peptide (PlnE: 33 amino acids; PlnF: 34 amino acids) bacteriocin produced by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum with antimicrobi

Alginate microparticles containing silver@hydroxyapatite functionalized calcium carbonate composites.

This paper focuses on the preparation and characterization of antibacterial alginate microparticles containing silver@hydroxyapatite functionalized calcium carbonate composites for tissue engineering. Microparticles were prepared by cross-linking a silver@composite sodium alginate dispersion with CaCl2. This method showed a very good silver efficiency loading and the presence of silver chloride nanoparticles was detected. Silver free microparticles, containing hydroxyapatite functionalized calcium carbonates and neat alginate microparticles were prepared as well. All microparticles were charac

Development of alginate-collagen interpenetrating network for osteoarthritic cartilage by in situ softening.

This study presents an alginate-collagen interpenetrating network (IPN) matrix of incorporating collagen fibrils into an alginate hydrogel by physical mixing and controlled gelation. The resulting matrix closely mimics the physiological and pathological stiffness range of the chondrocyte pericellular matrix (PCM). Chondrocytes were cultured within three-dimensional (3D) alginate-collagen IPN matrices with varying stiffness, namely Firm, Medium, and Soft. Alginate lyase was introduced to study the effects of the changes in stiffness of the Firm on chondrocyte response by in situ softening. The

The Protective Effects of Water-Soluble Alginic Acid on the N-Terminal of Thymopentin.

Thymopentin (TP5) has exhibited strong antitumor and immunomodulatory effects in vivo. However, the polypeptide is rapidly degraded by protease and aminopeptidase within a minute at the N-terminal of TP5, resulting in severe limitations for further practical applications. In this study, the protective effects of water-soluble alginic acid (WSAA) on the N-terminal of TP5 were investigated by establishing an H22 tumor-bearing mice model and determining thymus, spleen, and liver indices, immune cells activities, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-2, and IL-4 levels, and cell cycle distributions. The results demons

Enhanced antidepressant effects of BDNF-quercetin alginate nanogels for depression therapy.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) with neuronic development and function is a promising therapeutic agent for treating depressive disorder, according to the neurotrophin hypothesis. However, the delivery of BDNF into the brain is not easy as these large protein molecules cannot efficiently cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and easily suffer oxidative damage in vivo. Therefore, the quercetin-based alginate nanogels (quercetin nanogels) loaded with BDNF have been developed, which could efficiently bypass the BBB via the nose-to-brain pathway and protect BDNF from oxidative d

Immobilization of ZnIn2S4 on sodium alginate foam for efficient hexavalent chromium removal.

Photocatalytic technology has been extensively studied in the removal of toxic Cr(VI) from wastewater. However, common powdery photocatalysts suffer from poor recyclability and secondly pollution. Herein, the zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn2S4) particles were integrated onto the sodium alginate foam(SA) matrix through a facile way to obtain foam-shape catalyst. Diverse characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR), scanning electron microscope(SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) were employed to reveal the composite compositions, organic-i

The Effect of Temperature on the Mechanical Properties of Alginate Gels in Water/Alcohol Solutions.

Alginate organohydrogels prepared in water/alcohol mixtures play an important role in electronic and superconductor applications in low-temperature environments. The study deals with the preparation of Ca-alginate organohydrogels and the analysis of their equilibrium swelling and mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures. It is shown that the equilibrium degree of swelling at room temperature is noticeably affected by the concentration of co-solvents (methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol) in the mixtures and the number of carbon atoms in the co-solvent molecules. Mechanical properties are st

Alginate Conjugation Increases Toughness in Auricular Chondrocyte Seeded Collagen Hydrogels.

Current auricular cartilage replacements for pediatric microtia fail to address the need for long-term integration and neocartilage formation. While collagen hydrogels have been successful in fostering neocartilage formation, the toughness and extensibility of these materials do not match that of native tissue. This study used the N-terminal functionalization of collagen with alginate oligomers to improve toughness and extensibility through metal-ion complexation. Alginate conjugation was confirmed via FTIR spectroscopy. The retention of native collagen fibrillar structure, thermal gelation, a

Alginate hydrogels: A potential tissue engineering intervention for intervertebral disc degeneration.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is a major cause of low back pain and disability, affecting millions of people worldwide. Current treatments for IVD degeneration are limited to invasive surgery or pain management. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the use of biomaterials, such as alginate hydrogels, for the treatment of IVD degeneration. Alginate hydrogels are an example of such a biomaterial that is biocompatible and can be tailored to mimic the native extracellular matrix of the IVD. Derived from alginate, a naturally derived polysaccharide from brown seaweed that can be

Synthesis of sodium alginate/polyacrylamide photochromic hydrogels with quadruple crosslinked networks.

Photochromic hydrogels have great potential for inkless printing, smart display devices, anti-counterfeiting and encryption. However, the short information storage time limits their large-scale application. In this study, a sodium alginate/polyacrylamide photochromic hydrogel with ammonium molybdate as the color change factor was prepared. The addition of sodium alginate was beneficial to the improvement of the fracture stress and elongation at break. In particular, when the content of sodium alginate was 3%, the fracture stress increased from 20 kPa without sodium alginate to 62 kPa. Differen

Injectable metronidazole-eluting gelatin-alginate hydrogels for local treatment of periodontitis.

Infection of the periodontal pocket presents two major challenges for drug delivery: administration into the periodontal pocket and a high fluid clearance rate in the pocket. The current study aimed to develop and study a novel hydrogel system for delivery of the antibiotic drug metronidazole directly into the periodontal pocket via injection followed by in situ gelation. The natural polymers gelatin and alginate served as basic materials, and their crosslinking using a carbodiimide resulted in a dual hydrogel network. The study focused on the effects of the hydrogel's formulation parameters o

Investigating preparation and characterisation of diphtheria toxoid-loaded on sodium alginate nanoparticles.

This paper aims to investigate the preparation and characterisation of the alginate nanoparticles (NPs) as antigen delivery system loaded by diphtheria toxoid (DT). For this purpose, both the loading capacity (LC) and Loading efficiency (LE) of the alginate NPs burdened by DT are evaluated. Moreover, the effects of different concentrations of sodium alginate and calcium chloride on the NPs physicochemical characteristics are surveyed in addition to other physical conditions such as homogenization time and rate. To do so, the NPs are characterised using particle size and distribution, zeta pote

Effect of sterilization processes on alginate/gelatin inks for three-dimensional printing.

309Sterilization is a crucial step in the process of developing bioinks for tissue engineering applications. In this work, alginate/gelatin inks were subjected to three sterilization methods: ultraviolet (UV) radiation, filtration (FILT), and autoclaving (AUTO). In addition, to simulate the sterilization effect in a real environment, inks were formulated in two different media, specifically, Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). First, rheological tests were performed to evaluate the flow properties of the inks, and we observed that UV samples showed sh

Tunable alginate hydrogels as injectable drug delivery vehicles for optic neuropathy.

Many disease pathologies, particularly in the eye, are induced by oxidative stress. In particular, injury to the optic nerve (ON), or optic neuropathy, is one of the most common causes of vision loss. Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) occurs when the ON is damaged following blunt or penetrating trauma to either the head or eye. Currently, there is no effective treatment for TON, only management options, namely the systematic delivery of corticosteroids and surgical decompression of the optic nerve. Unfortunately, neither option alleviates the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which ar

Adsorption of Hexavalent Chromium by Sodium Alginate Fiber Biochar Loaded with Lanthanum.

Lanthanun oxide (La2O3) is a lanthanum chemical compound incorporates a sensible anionic complexing ability; however, it lacks stability at a low pH scale. Biochar fibers will give the benefit of their massive space and plethoric uses on the surface to support a metal chemical compound. Herein, wet spinning technology was used to load La3+ onto sodium alginate fiber, and to convert La3+ into La2O3 through carbonization. The La2O3-modified biochar (La-BC) fiber was characterized by SEM, XRD and XPS, etc. An adsorption experiment proved that La-BC showed an excellent adsorption capacity for chro
