Borata-alkene derivatives conveniently made by frustrated Lewis pair chemistry.

Two (aryl)PXY starting materials (aryl = mesityl or 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl; X,Y = Cl, Br) were reacted with lithiated conjugated enynes (derived from 2-methylbutenyne or 1-ethynylcyclohexene) to yield the respective (aryl)bis(enynyl)phosphanes. Their reaction with HB(C6F5)2 gave the heterocyclic five-membered zwitterionic borata-diene compounds containing the aryl group and one unchanged enynyl substituent at phosphorus. The borata-alkene products were thought to arise from a two step process of regioselective alkyne hydroboration followed by an internal phosphane attack on the boryldiene un

Copper-carbene complexes as catalysts in the synthesis of functionalized styrenes and aliphatic alkenes.

(NHC)-Cu (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes efficiently catalyzed the methylenation of a variety of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes and ketones in the presence of trimethylsilyldiazomethane, triphenylphosphine, and 2-propanol. The copper catalysts are not only inexpensive compared to rhodium complexes, but they also exhibit better functional group compatibility with aromatic aldehydes and ketones. Indeed very high yields were obtained for the formation of styrenes containing nitro, trifluoromethyl, amino, and ester groups, as well as for pyridine-, pyrrole-, and indole-substituted alken

Molecular simulation of adsorption and diffusion of chlorinated alkenes in ZSM-5 zeolites.

In this work, adsorption and diffusion of trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in ZSM-5-type zeolites were studied using molecular simulation methods. Grand canonical Monte Carlo technique was to calculate adsorption isotherms and heats of vaporization of TCE and PCE in zeolite. The results demonstrated that the Pnma-P2(1)2(1)2(1) symmetry transition of the zeolite framework has no significant effect on the TCE adsorption capacity of the silicalite, but it causes an increase of the PCE adsorption capacity. Simulations using a silicalite framework with Pnma symmetry showed that

Electrochemical Cyclization of Alkene with Bisnucleophile to Assemble Piperazine/1,4-Diazepane Scaffolds.

Piperazine and homopiperazine skeletons are widely recognized as privileged scaffolds for the construction of pharmaceuticals. Nevertheless, the facile synthesis of diverse carbon-substituted piperazine derivatives from readily available, structurally simple feedstock chemicals remains a formidable synthetic challenge. Herein, we disclose a modular electrochemical strategy for the efficient synthesis of functionalized piperazine and 1,4-diazepane derivatives. This protocol employs inexpensive and commercially available alkenes as the starting materials. Crucially, the well-designed reaction se

CIMS Detection of Hydroxymethyl Hydroperoxide: Insights into Alkene Ozonolysis in a Variety of Environments.

Hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide (HMHP, CH2OHOOH) is produced from the reaction of water vapor with CH2OO, which is the simplest Criegee intermediate and is produced by the reaction of ozone (O3) with a terminal alkene. After formation, HMHP is thought to have a considerable lifetime upward of 1 day due to its reaction with OH, which produces formic acid and formaldehyde. HMHP measurements can therefore provide meaningful insight into atmospheric oxidation processes, especially alkene oxidation. We demonstrate the ability of iodide adduct chemical ionization mass spectrometry (I-CIMS) to detect HMH

Synthesis of Arenesulfenyl Fluorides and Fluorosulfenylation of Alkenes, Alkynes, and α-Diazocarbonyl Compounds.

Sulfenyl fluorides are organic compounds of sulfur in formal oxidation state +2 with the formula R-S-F. Although the chloride, bromide, and iodide analogues have been extensively described in the literature, arenesulfenyl fluorides remain essentially unstudied. These structures have been implicated as putative intermediates in established processes to access polyfluorinated sulfur species; however, definitive and direct evidence of their existence has not been obtained, nor has a systematic understanding of their reactivity. Here, we report the synthesis, isolation, and spectroscopic character

SmI2-Catalyzed Coupling of Alkyl Housane Ketones and Alkenes in an Approach to Norbornanes.

Cross-coupling strategies involving strain release have gained significant recent attention for the construction of complex molecular frameworks, particularly in the context of preparing bioisosteres for medicinal chemistry. While the reactivity of cyclopropanes and bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs) has been extensively studied, higher homologues are emerging as valuable substrates for synthesis. For example, methods for the fragmentation and coupling of bicyclo[2.1.0]pentane, or housane, ketones show promise but are currently limited in substrate scope. Here, we describe a mild, atom-economical, s

Iodonitrene-Mediated Nitrogen Transfer to Alkenes for the Direct Synthesis of NH-Aziridines.

This work presents a novel and efficient method for the direct synthesis of NH-aziridines from a broad range of alkenes under mild conditions. The developed method uses aqueous ammonia and (diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PIDA) at 0 °C, offering a straightforward and atom-economical approach. Notably, this approach addresses the common challenge of chemoselectivity, effectively preventing the overoxidation of aziridines to nitriles. Mechanistic studies support the involvement of an in situ-generated iodonitrene as the key nitrogen-transfer intermediate. Overall, this method represents a significant adv

Enantioselective Alkoxycarbonyl-Lactonization of Alkenes via the Merger of Photoredox and Copper Catalysis.

The synthesis of ester derivatives represents one of the most significant and fundamental tasks in modern organic chemistry, and numerous methods have been developed in both academic and industrial contexts. Among these, alkoxycarbonyl radical-mediated functionalization strategies have emerged as a highly efficient and versatile tool for the synthesis of these compounds. Despite the significant advancements in recent years, the radical-induced enantioselective alkoxycarbonylation reaction remains largely unexplored. Herein, a highly enantioselective alkoxycarbonyl-lactonization of alkenes is r

Olefination of carbonyls with alkenes enabled by electrophotocatalytic generation of distonic radical cations.

The conversion of carbonyls to olefins is a transformation of great importance for complex molecule synthesis. Standard methods use stoichiometric reagents that have poor atom economy and require strongly basic conditions, which limit their functional group compatibility. An ideal solution would be to catalytically olefinate carbonyls under nonbasic conditions using simple and widely available alkenes, yet no such broadly applicable reaction is known. Here, we demonstrate a tandem electrochemical/electrophotocatalytic reaction to olefinate aldehydes and ketones with a broad range of unactivate

Transition Metal (Ni, Cu, Pd)-Catalyzed Alkene Dicarbofunctionalization Reactions.

Recently, alkene dicarbofunctionalization, i.e., the powerful organic synthesis method of alkene difunctionalization with two carbon sources, emerged as a formidable reaction with immense promise to synthesize complex molecules expeditiously from simple chemicals. This reaction is generally achieved with transition metals (TMs) through interception by carbon sources of an alkylmetal [β-H-C(sp3)-[M]] species, a key intermediate prone to undergo rapid β-H elimination. Related prior reports, since Paolo Chiusoli and Catellani's work in 1982 [ Tetrahedron Lett. 1982, 23, 4517], have used bicyclic

A bench-stable copper photocatalyst for the rapid hydrophosphination of activated and unactivated alkenes.

Cu(acac)2 (1) is a highly active catalyst for the hydrophosphination of alkenes. Photocatalytic conditions are critical, and provide high conversions with unactivated substrates that have never before been reported with an air-stable catalyst or at ambient temperature. The commercial availability, ease of use, and broad substrate scope of compound 1 make hydrophosphination more available to synthetic chemists.

Generation of Halomethyl Radicals by Halogen Atom Abstraction and Their Addition Reactions with Alkenes.

α-Aminoradicals undergo halogen atom abstraction to form halomethyl radicals in reactions initiated by the combination of tert-butyl hydroperoxide, aliphatic trialkylamine, halocarbon, and copper(I) iodide. The formation of the α-aminoradical circumvents preferential hydrogen atom transfer in favor of halogen atom transfer, thereby releasing the halomethyl radical for addition to alkenes. The resulting radical addition products add the tert-butylperoxy group to form α-peroxy-β,β-dichloropropylbenzene products that are convertible to their corresponding β,β-dichloro-alcohols and to novel pyridi

Vicinal Difunctionalization of Alkenes through a Multicomponent Reaction with the Insertion of Sulfur Dioxide.

A four-component reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, sulfur dioxide, alkenes, and hydroxylamines under mild conditions is accomplished. No catalyst or additive is needed for the vicinal difunctionalization of alkenes with the insertion of sulfur dioxide. Not only DABCO⋅(SO2 )2 (DABCO=1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) but also potassium metabisulfite (K2 S2 O5 ) is effective in this transformation. The multicomponent reaction proceeds efficiently at room temperature with broad substrate scope, leading to the corresponding products in good yields.

Synthesis of pyridyl-dihydrobenzooxaphosphole ligands and their application in asymmetric hydrogenation of unfunctionalized alkenes.

Synthesis of the electron-rich 2-substituted-6-(phenylsulfonyl)pyridines is presented. A series of air-stable, tunable, P-chiral pyridyl-dihydrobenzooxaphosphole ligands were designed and synthesized by a diastereoselective S(N)Ar substitution of the corresponding sulfonyl pyridines. The ligands were successfully applied in the Ir-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of unfunctionalized alkenes with good enantioselectivities.

Photoredox-Catalyzed Radical Heterocyclization of Heteroatom-Tethered Alkenes with α-Iodonium Diazo Compounds.

A photoredox-catalyzed radical heterocyclization of alkenoic acids and sulfonamides with α-iodonium diazo compounds is reported. The reaction delivers diazomethyl-containing lactones and pyrrolidines in good yields with full retention of the diazo group. The synthetic utility is demonstrated by a gram-scale synthesis and downstream derivatizations under mild, redox-neutral conditions. A plausible radical-polar crossover mechanism is proposed for this transformation.

Potassium Amide-Promoted Direct Synthesis of α-Aryl Nitriles from α-Aryl Alkenes.

The synthesis of organic nitriles remains heavily dependent on methodologies that often involve transition-metal catalysts or toxic cyanide reagents, limiting their sustainability. Here, we report a cyanide- and transition-metal-free chemical looping strategy that converts α-aryl alkenes and ammonia (NH3) into α-aryl nitriles using potassium amide (KNH2) as a reaction mediator. The reaction initially proceeds via the formation of α-aryl nitrile potassium salts. Subsequent treatment of the potassium salts with NH3 liberates nitriles and regenerates KNH2, thereby closing the chemical loop. Combi

Cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-selective hydrophosphonylation of unactivated alkenes enabled by phthalimidyl phosphite reagents.

Alkene hydrophosphonylation constitutes an indispensable tool for the synthesis of alkylphosphonates which have found widespread applications in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and materials science. Although numerous methods for alkene hydrophosphonylation have been reported, achieving Markovnikov selectivity with unactivated alkenes remains a formidable challenge. Herein we report the development of a class of phosphites featuring a unique N-O-P linkage, namely dialkyl phthalimidyl phosphites, which serve as efficient radical trapping reagents. Using dialkyl phthalimidyl phosphites as phospho

Tricationic Xanthylium-Catalyzed Oxyamination of Activated Alkenes Using O-Benzoylhydroxylamines As Bifunctional Reagents.

1,2-Amino alcohols are essential scaffolds in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical development, yet the direct catalytic synthesis of secondary alkylamino alcohol derivatives from alkene precursors remains a significant challenge. Although O-benzoylhydroxylamines are effective aminating reagents, the direct use of primary alkyl amino groups (RNH-X) in amination is still rare. Moreover, existing methods often suffer from poor atom economy due to the generation of stoichiometric byproducts. Herein, we report a tricationic xanthylium-based organophotoredox catalyst that enables primary O-benzoylh
