The western barred bandicoot, Perameles bougainville, is an endangered Australian marsupial species. Routine histology of liver samples collected at necropsy from 19 of 20 (95%) western barred bandicoots revealed the sporadic to common occurrence of abnormal hepatocyte nuclei characterized by margination of chromatin and concomitant central pallor. Some abnormal hepatocyte nuclei were mildly to markedly enlarged and irregularly shaped. Periodic acid-Schiff reagent stained 131 of 142 (92%) of these abnormal hepatocyte nuclei. Positive staining was completely eliminated by diastase pretreatment.

The mobilities of coenzyme A and coenzyme A derivatives of cholate, chenodeoxycholate, deoxycholate, lithocholate, and their 5 alpha analogs were studied in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. With a C18 Radial-PAK A cartridge (10-micron particles) and a solvent mixture of 2-propanol/10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0, 140:360), separation of the chenodeoxycholyl and deoxycholyl coenzyme A derivatives was not observed. An increase in ionic strength of the buffer to 50 mM afforded separation, which was markedly augmented with a C18 Radial-PAK A cartridge with 5-micron particles.

We compare the adsorption behavior of high density lipoproteins (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) on "fibrogenic" and "nonfibrogenic" mineral dusts. The adsorption tests with bovine lipoprotein concentrate and human serum produced the following results: 1) All seven examined fibrogenic dusts (SiO2 DQ12, SiO2 F600, silica, graphite, TiC, kaolin, talc) adsorbed significantly more high density lipoproteins (HDL), than the five examined nonfibrogenic (inert) dusts (TiO2, SnO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Fe3O4). We have developed an improved method for packaging adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors with a replication-defective adenovirus-AAV (Ad-AAV) hybrid virus. The AAV vector encoding human acid alpha-glucosidase (hGAA) was cloned into an E1, polymerase/preterminal protein-deleted adenovirus, such that it is packaged as an Ad vector. Specimens of lung adenocarcinoma (AdCa) from Russian nuclear workers (n = 54) exposed to alpha particles and gamma rays and from individuals non-exposed to radiation (n = 21) were examined using immunohistochemistry. The effects of an oral p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor and polyethylene particles separately and together on tissue differentiation in the bone harvest chamber (BHC) in rabbits over a 3-week treatment period were investigated. Although aseptic loosening of the prosthesis is a long-term complication after total joint replacement, the detailed mechanism of osteolysis remains unknown. We examined 82 samples from 40 patients with aseptic loosened hip prostheses histologically, and compared the distribution of particles, macrophages/histiocytes, and foreign body giant cells in the retrieved tissue from capsules and around prostheses. Furthermore, to investigate the mechanism of osteolysis, we cultured tissue from a patient with massive osteolysis and examined the effects of the conditioned medium on osteoblasts in vitro.
