[Transient global amnesia and vascular risk factors].

INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome determined by an episode of less than 24 hours consisting of temporo-spatial disorientation with retrograde and anterograde amnesia followed by complete recovery. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the presence or absence of vascular risk factors (VRF) in patients with TGA is associated with different clinical data and/or examination findings. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was made of two groups of 13 and 12 patients with TGA, who presented with and without VRF, respectively. The following variables were determin

Persistent memory impairment following transient global amnesia.

A controlled neuropsychological study of 41 patients tested at 6 months after attacks of transient global amnesia (TGA) revealed no evidence of general intellectual, immediate (short-term) memory or nonverbal memory impairment. The patient group's performance was, however, significantly worse than that of the control's on measures of verbal memory notably immediate, 30-minute and 24-hour delayed paragraph recall. In addition, tests of public and personal remote memory revealed significant impairment of naming and recognition of famous faces, and of dating famous events without evidence of a te

Transient global amnesia. When memory temporarily disappears.

Transient global amnesia is a benign condition of sudden onset that resolves spontaneously. Retrograde amnesia prevents recall of events antedating the episode by hours to years, and anterograde amnesia produces the characteristic features of inability to learn new material and repetitious questioning. Laboratory investigation of these patients is generally unrewarding. Transient global amnesia is easily distinguished from amnesia caused by head trauma or transient ischemic attack, confusional state, and functional amnesia. Although transient global amnesia is most likely caused by transient i

Cranial CT scan in transient global amnesia.

The occurrence of cerebral infarction in patients with transient global amnesia (n = 43) was evaluated by CT scan and compared to that of patients with transient ischemic attacks (TIA) (n = 58) and with no neurological disease (n = 52). Significant differences were demonstrated between TGA and TIA patients in relation to the control group, but no differences were found between patients with TGA and TIA. Our study suggests a vascular mechanism for TGA and that TGA could be considered a low risk TIA in most cases.

Transient global amnesia: a case-control study.

The clinical findings and laboratory results from 18 patients with clear-cut transient global amnesia (TGA) were compared with the results from 90 nonischemic neurological control patients using case-control analysis. A prior episode of cerebral ischemia, generally in the posterior circulation, was the most significant risk factor for TGA. Other risk factors for cerebrovascular disease were more prominent in the TGA group, but this association became less significant when cerebral ischemia was controlled for. Migraine, epilepsy, and psychiatric disorders were not significantly associated with

Long-term prognosis in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is generally believed to be a transient ischemic attack affecting short-term memory centers. A recent three-year follow-up found a high incidence of subsequent dementia and stroke in patients with TGA. We studied the course (average, 46 months) of 32 patients with TGA and found a low rate of recurrence (12.5%), dementia (6%), or transient ischemic attacks (3%). Transient global amnesia would appear to carry a more benign prognosis than classical transient ischemic attacks.

Brain stem dysfunction in transient global amnesia.

A patient with transient global amnesia also had transient bilateral gaze nystagmus which was detected both by conventional bedside examination and upon electronystagmographic recording. The nystagmus was absent one week later indicating recovery of the temporary brain stem deficit. The recording of objective evidence of brain stem dysfunction in the form of gaze nystagmus in a patient who had transient global amnesia, suggests that both were due to a transient ischemic attack involving the cerebral blood supply in the vertebrobasilar distribution.

[Amnestic episode (transient global amnesia) (author's transl)].

The appearance of the amnestic episode is discussed by presentation of 4 own cases and by means of literature. The amnestic episode is a mental disorder, which exclusively affects short-term memory with a sudden onset and a duration of some hours, seldom up to several days, and often it is connected with a retrograde amnesia. The latter disappears in all cases, but there remains a permanent lack of memory for the time of the episode. Recidivism is rare. Internal, neurological and neurophysiological findings during and after the amnestic episode regularly are normal, at least certainly without

Transient global amnesia: an extensive case report.

A case of transient global amnesia was studied in detail. Of note was a temporally extensive, although quite patchy, retrograde amnesia during the event for information recallable at other times. While a consolidation block can explain the anterograde amnesia in transient global amnesia, the profound retrograde amnesia requires an additional block in the retrieval of old, established memories.

Recovery of function processes in human amnesia: evidence from transient global amnesia.

There are few clues as to the processes that underlie recovery of function from human amnesia. Evidence is offered from the perspective of a study of recovery of function during an episode of transient global amnesia (TGA) that occurred as a complication of a cerebral angiographic procedure being carried out in a neurosciences centre, and where there was therefore a unique opportunity to examine acute changes in memory function. This allowed us to conduct the first quantitative study where shrinkage of anterograde and retrograde memory loss was plotted at four separate intervals throughout the
