This article reviews current research in amphibian and reptilian cytochromes P450, important to the overall understanding of xenobiotic metabolism in the ecosystem and the evolution of P450s. Amphibians and reptilians contain the normal mixed function oxidase system (MFO). In general the MFO content and activities are less than those found in mammals, but only a few of the known activities have been examined in these vertebrate classes. Research to date has focused on two families of cytochromes P450, CYP1 and 2. The isoforms examined catalyze the classic activities but there have been notable

The carbonic acid-base balance and the concentrations of Na and Cl were studied in 3 fluids, plasmatic, pericardial and peritoneal, sampled from 2 species of amphibians: Pleurodeles waltl and Xenopus laevis. In Pleurodeles the pericardial and peritoneal fluids are in a state of marked metabolic alkalosis, the carbonate alkalinity being up to 10 times higher in the serosal fluids than in the plasma, whereas PCO2's are very close in the 3 fluids. The Cl concentration is markedly lower in the serosal fluids than in the plasma. In Xenopus, the metabolic alkalosis of the serosal fluids also exists,

The adrenal gland is an essential component of the body stress response; it is formed by two portions: a steroidogenic and a chromaffin tissue. Despite the anatomy of adrenal gland is different among classes of vertebrates, the hormones produced are almost the same. During stress, these hormones contribute to body homeostasis and maintenance of ion balance. The adrenal gland is very sensitive to toxic compounds, many of which behave like endocrine-disruptor chemicals (EDCs). They contribute to alter the endocrine system in wildlife and humans and are considered as possible responsible of the d

Mycobacteriosis is a serious disease across many animal species. Approximately more than 120 species are currently recognized in the genus Mycobacterium. This article describes the zoonotic potential of mycobacteria and mycobacteriosis in fish, amphibians, rodents, rabbits, and ferrets. It considers clinical signs; histology; molecular methods of identification, such as polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing; routes of infection; and disease progression. Studying the disease in animals may aid in understanding the pathogenesis of mycobacterial infections in humans and identify better the

Both tympanic and nontympanic pathways of sound reception are utilized by anuran amphibians. The relationship between body size and the acoustic responsiveness of various body surfaces that may serve as pathways for sound reception in anurans was analyzed. The motion of the different surfaces (tympanum, lateral body wall, lateral head surface, and dorsal shoulder surface) produced by sound was measured with a laser vibrometer in anuran species. The frequency response and amplitude levels of motion of these body surfaces clearly were linked with size. In all animals, nontympanic surfaces were m

Urbanization is a major driver of biodiversity loss by transforming ecosystems and imposing novel selective pressures that reshape not only species but also their interspecific interactions. In urban environments, predation pressure is often altered, leading to shifts in antipredator strategies, and parasitism varies with changes in environmental quality and the introduction of novel hosts or vectors. Understanding how these processes are modified by urbanization is particularly urgent for amphibians, the most threatened group of vertebrates, as urban-driven changes may have profound consequen

Pathogens inflict various costs onto their hosts from sublethal changes in physiology and behavior to intense pathology and mortality. The timing of host immune responses and concomitant changes in behavior may be jointly underpinned by an increase in glucocorticoid hormones. The temporal and causal links between these interrelated responses to infection remain equivocal in many host-pathogen systems. Here, using a fungal pathogen implicated in global amphibian declines, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), we examined sublethal consequences of infection in the Cuban tree frog (Osteopilus sept

Macrophage (Mϕ)-lineage cells are integral to the immune defences of all vertebrates, including amphibians. Across vertebrates, Mϕ differentiation and functionality depend on activation of the colony stimulating factor-1 (CSF1) receptor by CSF1 and interluekin-34 (IL34) cytokines. Our findings to date indicate that amphibian (Xenopus laevis) Mϕs differentiated with CSF1 and IL34 are morphologically, transcriptionally and functionally distinct. Notably, mammalian Mϕs share common progenitor population(s) with dendritic cells (DCs), which rely on fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand (FLT3L) for dif

The amphibian metamorphosis assay (AMA) is a key in vivo endocrine screen to investigate chemicals with potential thyroid activity. The test guidelines and associated guidance consider that treatment-related effects on thyroid gland histomorphology automatically result in the assay being considered positive for thyroid activity, independent of the direction of change or conflicting results in the other biological endpoints. An AMA study was conducted with five different feeding rations equivalent to 50%, 30%, 20%, 10%, and 5% of the recommended feeding rate. Biological endpoints relating to gr

The global amphibian declines are compounded by infections with members of the Ranavirus genus such as Frog Virus 3 (FV3). Premetamorphic anuran amphibians are believed to be significantly more susceptible to FV3 while this pathogen targets the kidneys of both pre- and postmetamorphic animals. Paradoxically, FV3-challenged Xenopus laevis tadpoles exhibit lower kidney viral loads than adult frogs. Presently, we demonstrate that X. laevis tadpoles are intrinsically more resistant to FV3 kidney infections than cohort-matched metamorphic and postmetamorphic froglets and that this resistance appear

PURPOSE: The diversity of larval digenetic trematodes can provide information on one or more intermediate hosts prior to maturation into the definitive host; on host activity and distribution; and in some cases, on environmental perturbations. In this context, the goal of the present study was to analyse the trematode larvae found in adult amphibians collected from the Argentinian Chaco Region. Few studies have been reported on the systematics of larval digeneans in amphibians.
METHODS: A total of 167 specimens of frogs (Leptodactylus macrosternum, Leptodactylus latinasus, Lepidobatrachus lae

Symbiotic interactions can determine the evolutionary trajectories of host species, influencing genetic variation through selection and changes in demography. In the context of strong selective pressures such as those imposed by infectious diseases, symbionts providing defences could contribute to increase host fitness upon pathogen emergence. Here, we generated genome-wide data of an amphibian species to find evidence of evolutionary pressures driven by two skin symbionts: a batrachochytrid fungal pathogen and an antifungal bacterium. Using demographic modelling, we found evidence of decrease

Professor Hans H. Ussing (1911-2000) was one of the founding members of the field of epithelial cell biology. He is most famous for the electrophysiological technique that he developed to measure electrogenic ion flux across epithelial tissues. Ussing-style electrophysiology has been applied to multiple tissues and has informed fields as diverse as amphibian biology and medicine. In the latter, this technique has contributed to a basic understanding of maladies such as hypertension, polycystic kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, and diarrheal diseases to mention but a few. In addition to this val

Lucilia (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a genus of blowflies comprised largely of saprophagous and facultative parasites of livestock. Lucilia bufonivora, however, exhibits a unique form of obligate parasitism of amphibians, typically affecting wild hosts. The evolutionary route by which amphibian myiasis arose, however, is not well understood due to the low phylogenetic resolution in existing nuclear DNA phylogenies. Furthermore, the timing of when specificity for amphibian hosts arose in L. bufonivora is also unknown. In addition, this species was recently reported for the first time in North Am

It is well-known that the metamorphosis process in amphibians is dependent on thyroid hormones. Laboratory studies have shown that several environmental contaminants can affect the function of thyroid hormones leading to alterations in the amphibian metamorphosis. The basic idea of the present study was to elucidate if the amphibian metamorphosis might be a useful tool as biomarker for effect-based environmental monitoring, examining wild tadpoles for potential thyroid hormone disruption. A laboratory test was performed to identify the responses from exposure to 6-propylthiouracil (PTU), which

The amphibian sacculus (AS) is an end organ that specializes in the detection of low-frequency auditory and vestibular signals. In this paper, we propose a model for the AS in the form of an array of phase oscillators with long-range coupling, subject to a steady load that suppresses spontaneous oscillations. The array is exposed to significant levels of frequency dispersion and intrinsic noise. We show that such an array can be a sensitive and robust subthreshold detector of low-frequency stimuli, though without significant frequency selectivity. The effects of intrinsic noise and frequency d

Leaf litter subsidies are important resources for aquatic consumers like tadpoles and snails, causing bottom-up effects on wetland ecosystems. Recent studies have shown that variation in litter nutritional quality can be as important as litter quantity in driving these bottom-up effects. Resource subsidies likely also have indirect and trait-mediated effects on predation and parasitism, but these potential effects remain largely unexplored. We generated predictions for differential effects of litter nutrition and secondary polyphenolic compounds on tadpole (Lithobates sylvatica) exposure and s

Many amphibians have declined globally due to introduction of the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Hundreds of species, many in well-protected habitats, remain as small populations at risk of extinction. Currently the only proven conservation strategy is to maintain species in captivity to be reintroduced at a later date. However, methods to abate the disease in the wild are urgently needed so that reintroduced and wild animals can survive in the presence of Bd. Vaccination has been widely suggested as a potential strategy to improve survival. We used captive-bred offspri

From 1999 to 2006, we sampled > 1200 amphibians for the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) at 30 sites in the southeastern USA. Using histological techniques or PCR assays, we detected chytrid infection in 10 species of aquatic-breeding amphibians in 6 states. The prevalence of chytrid infection was 17.8% for samples of postmetamorphic amphibians examined using skin swab-PCR assays (n = 202 samples from 12 species at 4 sites). In this subset of samples, anurans had a much higher prevalence of infection than caudates (39.2% vs. 5.5%, respectively). Mean prevalence in ranid frog
