A reliable method for Golgi staining of retina and brain slices.

Although the classical Golgi method is a powerful means for structural analysis of the brain, it is generally considered to be an unpredictable technique making anatomists wary of using it. Often, even when successful staining has occurred, deposits of silver chromate crystals on the surface of the tissue obscure examination. This paper describes a simple procedure for Golgi impregnation of retina and brain slices so that good, even staining is obtained and crystal formation is avoided. The most outstanding feature of the method is the consistency of results. This consistency is due to two fac…

[Felix Platter (1536-1614) as ophthalmologist].

Felix Platter, physician and anatomist, had a keen interest in ophthalmology, too. By his wife, he was related to a family of surgeons; this may have brought him into closer contact with eye diseases and their cure. Platter was the first physician to attribute the sensory power of the eye to the retina and a purely optical function to the lens (humor crystallinus). The present author mentions two original observations of his: the symptomatology of posterior vitreous detachment (observed in his own myopic left eye) and a case of blindness due to compression of the optic nerves by a cranial tumo

Clinical significance and measurement of the length of the right main bronchus.

It is important for surgeons, pathologists, anesthetists and anatomists to know the length of the right main bronchus. It extends from the carina of the trachea to the origin of the right upper lobe bronchus, but an exact method for measuring it has never been described. Using bronchography, the authors measured the length of the right main bronchus in 24 patients. The posteroanterior projection taken at a standard distance (1.8 m) from the patient was used to minimize distortion due to the technique; if present, the distortion would not be more than 5% and would be an increase rather than a d…

A Morphological Study of Assimilation of Atlas Vertebrae and their Clinical Implications in Indian Population.

BACKGROUND: Atlas is the first cervical vertebra. Rarely, does the atlas vertebra fuse with the occipital bone, and this occipitalization of the atlas is known as the assimilation of the atlas. Congenital fusion of the atlas with the occipital bone is the common denominator of a galaxy of skull defects, several examples of bony distortion of the foramen magnum were reported by early anatomists. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A total of 210 dry skulls of unknown sex and age from Dr. Rajendra Gode Medical College, Amravati, Department of Anatomy, and various other medical, Dental, and Ayurveda colleges …

Recognition of such variants is relevant for anatomists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and skull base surgeons.

Concomitant Sphenopterygoid Canal and Duplicated Foramen Rotundum Detected on Computed Tomography Scan.

The middle cranial fossa exhibits an interesting typical and variant anatomy. Accessory foramina frequently or rarely exists and transmits e … nly in a few case reports in the current literature, while their coexistence has not been reported. Anatomists and clinicians should remember that rare variant foramina can transmit emissary veins, such as the ones presented in the current imaging case.

Cystic duct and Heister's "valves".

The anatomy and physiology of the cystic duct have been relatively neglected by anatomists and the function of the spiral mucosal folds or "valves" of Heister, first described in 1732, remains obscure. The gross and microscopic anatomy of the cystic duct is reviewed together with results from laboratory investigations into the function of the cystic duct and its spirally arranged folds. The duct and spiral folds contain muscle fibers responsive to pharmacologic, hormonal, and neural stimuli. There is, however, no convincing evidence of a discrete muscular sphincter within the duct. Although th…

[Apropos of a case of solitary left coronary artery].

The single coronary artery stems from the coronary ostium in one of the aortic Valsalva sinuses: no other coronary artery is present. On its own, it vascularized the whole myocardium. It is a very rare condition--0.36% according to anatomists. Anatomical study by injection-corrosion on 200 hearts at Dakar Medical Faculty's anatomical laboratory revealed only one case of single, left-hand coronary artery. It had come from a 45 year old adult killed in an accident, who, up to that time, had suffered no cardio-vascular pathology. The post-mortem showed no associated abnormality. This observation …

Cadaveric Study of Thread Carpal Tunnel Release Using Newly Developed Thread, With a Histologic Perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the usefulness and feasibility of modified thread carpal tunnel release (TCTR) by comparing the results of using pre-existing commercial thread with those of a newly developed thread (Smartwire-01). METHODS: A total of 17 cadaveric wrists were used in the study. The modified TCTR method was practiced by two different experts. Pre-existing commercial surgical dissecting thread (Loop&ShearTM) was used for five wrists and the newly developed Smartwire-01 was used for twelve wrists. The gross and microanatomy of the specimens were evaluated by a blinded anatomist. RESULTS:

An unusual variation of axillary artery: a case report.

An unusual unilateral variation was observed in branching pattern and course of branches of the axillary artery of the left upper limb in an … icance in various clinical procedures performed by the vascular surgeons, radiologists and clinical anatomists. Moreover, the injuries of the brachial plexus are quite common and require exploration and repair. During such repair surgeries the abnormal arterial branch may be a matter of definite concern if its presence is not kept in mind.

The case of the Marquis de Causan (1804): an early account of visual loss associated with spinal cord inflammation.

The recent discovery of disease specific and pathogenic autoantibodies in neuromyelitis optica (NMO, Devic's disease) has revived the interest in this intriguing yet often devastating condition. While the history of classic multiple sclerosis has been studied extensively, only very little is known so far about the early history of NMO. Here we discuss a now forgotten report by the famous French anatomist and pathologist Antoine Portal (1742-1832), first physician to Louis XVIII and founding and lifelong president of the Académie Nationale de Médecine. Portal's report, which fascinated some of

An anatomical study of an electric organ and its nerve supply in the electric ray (Torpedinidae Narke japonica).

Despite anatomist's great interest in the electric organ (EO) of the electric ray, its detailed morphology remains unclear. In order to understand more completely the architecture of the EO and the branchial organ, it is necessary to examine detailed relationships regarding the origin, course and distribution of nerves innervating the EO. We thus carried out a macroscopic and microscopic anatomical study, focusing on issues, using the 18 sides of nine electric rays. The following results were obtained: (i) the EO was innervated exclusively by the facial, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves; (ii)

[Vesalius and the anatomy of the female genital tract].

Some of Vesalius' books allow us to clarify his knowledge of the anatomy of the female genital tract. We distinguish chronologically his Tabulae anatomicae sex (1538), the Fabrica (1543), the Letter on Chynaroot (1546), the Fabrica II (1555) and his letter to Falloppio (1564). The whole of these writings gives us an overview of the evolution of the insight concerning this important chapter of human anatomy. Anno 1538, Vesalius is in several matters Galen's pupil. Let us consider his pictures of the tractus genitalis of man and woman, which unmistakably follow the galenic theory of sexual isomo
