The morphology of prehatching embryos of Caecilia orientalis (Amphibia: Gymnophiona: Caeciliidae).

The state of development of advanced embryos of the direct-developing Ecuadorian caecilian Caecilia orientalis (Caeciliidae: Gymnophiona: Amphibia) was examined. Because it is established that development is correlated with reproductive modes in a number of features, we included comparison with taxa that represent the major reproductive modes and all of the modern normal tables and ossification sequences. The embryos of C. orientalis most closely resemble those of stage 47/48 Gegeneophis ramaswamii, an Indian caeciliid, and stage 47/48 Hypogeophis rostratus, a Seychellian caeciliid, both direc

A new genus and species of nicothoid copepod (Crustacea: Copepoda: Siphonostomatoida) parasitic on the mysid Siriella okadai Ii from off Japan.

Neomysidion rahotsu, a new genus and species of the siphonostomatoid family Nicothoidae Dana, 1849, is described from the marsupium of the mysid Siriella okadai Ii in the shallow waters of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. This is the first record of nicothoids parasitic on mysids in Asian waters. The new genus is closely related to the three other mysid-infesting nicothoid genera, Aspidoecia Giard & Bonnier, 1889, Mysidion Hansen, 1897 and Hansenulus Heron & Damkaer, 1986, but is distinguishable by: the trunk of adult females being remarkably transformed at maturity; the male cephalosome covered

Morphology of the terminal abdominal segments in females of Triatominae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Triatominae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Reduviidae) includes 151 extant species that are all potential vectors of Chagas disease. The relationships among these species have been recently studied based on molecular and cytogenetical approaches, and although the morphology of these insects is fairly described, wide comparative studies and cladistics analysis based on this feature are lacking. A comparative study of the terminal abdominal segments in females of 26 species of Triatominae was performed in order to evaluate their importance for the distinction of genera and species, and obtain characters t

[Organization of the osseous nasal septum and its homologues. IV-C. Alar bone composed of sub-nasal and septal bones. Nasal septum and axial palate complex (represented by artiodactyla and leporidae)].

The aim of this investigation was the study of the development changes of the osseous nasal septum and para-sphenoid systems in adult pigs, domestic cattle and the comparison with the control skull-group of 10 deer and 15 hares. The methodology was described elsewhere. In paired-hoof mammals was found that the alar bone is biomechanically composed system. It represents four segments: three of septum bone and one as subnasal bone. In examined mammals the degree of integration of sphenoid septum and alar bone ones was various. In fishes, amphibians, birds and paired-hoof mammals there are the ax

Comparative Evaluation of Bone Anatomy for Ramal Implant Placement and Proximity to the Inferior Alveolar Canal in Different Facial Divergence to Assess the Ideal Site of Placement: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study.

Objective The objective of this study is to determine the optimal location for placing the Ramal implant and assess the maximum transverse width of the ramal bone and the proximity of the implant to the inferior alveolar canal (IAC) through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Materials and methods The CBCT scans of 30 patients were utilized in this study and its proximity to the IAC at different vertical heights (3, 5, and 7 mm) and four angles of insertion (0°, 10°, 15°, and 20°). The maximum transverse width of the ramus and the proximity to the IAC from the site of insertion were me

Comparing endoscopic ultrasound-guided antegrade treatment and balloon endoscopy-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in the management of bile duct stones in patients with surgically altered anatomy: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided antegrade treatment (EUS-AG) and balloon endoscopy-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (BE-ERCP) have emerged as useful procedures for managing bile duct stones (BDS) in patients with surgically altered anatomy. However, the comparison between these two procedures has not been well studied. The aim of our study was to compare the clinical outcomes of EUS-AG and BE-ERCP for managing BDS in patients with surgically altered anatomy. METHODS: The database was retrospectively evaluated at two tertiary care centers to identify patients wi

New postcranial fossils of Australopithecus afarensis from Hadar, Ethiopia (1990-2007).

Renewed fieldwork at Hadar, Ethiopia, from 1990 to 2007, by a team based at the Institute of Human Origins, Arizona State University, resulted in the recovery of 49 new postcranial fossils attributed to Australopithecus afarensis. These fossils include elements from both the upper and lower limbs as well as the axial skeleton, and increase the sample size of previously known elements for A. afarensis. The expanded Hadar sample provides evidence of multiple new individuals that are intermediate in size between the smallest and largest individuals previously documented, and so support the hypoth

Congenital orthopaedic limp deformities in Corpus Hippocraticum.

During the fifth century BC in ancient Greece during the eve of orthopaedics, the Hippocratic School of Medicine diagnosed a series of congenital limb deformities. Congenital dislocation of the arm, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, tarsotibial joint, apex leg, as well as talipes valgus (clubfoot), congenital clavicle fractures, and thumb malfunction were all discussed by Hippocrates and his followers. Ancient Greek medico-philosophers, fond of a "perfect" human body, proposed an immediate non-interventional approach, while archaic orthotics and specialized footwear were suggested. The Hippocratic meth

A revised metric for quantifying body shape in vertebrates.

Vertebrates exhibit tremendous diversity in body shape, though quantifying this variation has been challenging. In the past, researchers have used simplified metrics that either describe overall shape but reveal little about its anatomical basis or that characterize only a subset of the morphological features that contribute to shape variation. Here, we present a revised metric of body shape, the vertebrate shape index (VSI), which combines the four primary morphological components that lead to shape diversity in vertebrates: head shape, length of the second major body axis (depth or width), a

Age-Related and Degenerative Changes in the Osseous Anatomy, Alignment, and Range of Motion of the Cervical Spine: A Comparative Study of Radiographic Data From 1016 Patients With Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy and 1230 Asymptomatic Subjects.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective comparative study. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish cervical spine morphometry, alignment, and range of motion (ROM) and to clarify the impact of these age-related and degenerative changes. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There are no studies that have evaluated differences in the results of cervical spine radiographs between a large series of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients and healthy subjects. METHODS: We enrolled 1016 consecutive CSM patients who underwent laminoplasty. CSM patients were also divided based on each decade of life between the

Towards the resolution of a long-standing evolutionary question: muscle identity and attachments are mainly related to topological position and not to primordium or homeotic identity of digits.

Signaling for limb bone development usually precedes that for muscle development, such that cartilage is generally present before muscle formation. It remains obscure, however, if: (i) tetrapods share a general, predictable spatial correlation between bones and muscles; and, if that is the case, if (ii) such a correlation would reflect an obligatory association between the signaling involved in skeletal and muscle morphogenesis. We address these issues here by using the results of a multidisciplinary analysis of the appendicular muscles of all major tetrapod groups integrating dissections, mus

Evolutionary and ontogenetic changes of the anatomical organization and modularity in the skull of archosaurs.

Comparative anatomy studies of the skull of archosaurs provide insights on the mechanisms of evolution for the morphologically and functionally diverse species of crocodiles and birds. One of the key attributes of skull evolution is the anatomical changes associated with the physical arrangement of cranial bones. Here, we compare the changes in anatomical organization and modularity of the skull of extinct and extant archosaurs using an Anatomical Network Analysis approach. We show that the number of bones, their topological arrangement, and modular organization can discriminate birds from non

The pancreas from Aristotle to Galen.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The first description of the pancreas in literature is found in Aristotle's Historia Animalium, but it is modified by "so-called". Therefore, the origin is pursued more extensively. METHODS: The Greek-English Lexicon recommends three treatises as a possible original source. These three and Galen's other papers are investigated. In 2005, Sachs et al. suggested an origin of the pancreas might have derived from the intestinal divination using the avian pancreas. This report is evaluated. RESULTS: The avian pancreas which is the intraperitoneal organ, might have been well kno
