A large vascular leiomyoma or an infected sebaceous cyst of the chest? A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular leiomyoma is a rare tumour of smooth muscle origin. It has been reported in many anatomical sites, but it usually affects limbs. It's recurrence rate is slow but it's quite difficult to make diagnosis. CASE REPORT: The study describes the case of a 53-year-old man, with a subcutaneous, large vascular leiomyoma of the right clavicular region. The patient had a painful, slow-growing mass, measuring more than 20 mm. The mass had a relatively homogeneous, hypoechoic-echo texture, with a small amount of posterior acoustic enhancement. No diagnosis was made and the patient un

Radiological localizing techniques in adrenal tumors.

The characterisation of adrenal lesions is a common radiological dilemma. Incidental adrenal lesions are commonly detected with computed tomography (CT), and lesion characterisation is critical. The prevalence of incidental adrenal lesions has been reported to be 2.3% at autopsy and 0.5-2% with abdominal CT. Such lesions are likely to be seen with increasing frequency given the expanding use of radiological imaging in clinical practice. Although the majority of adrenal lesions are benign, in patients with an extra-adrenal primary cancer the probability of an adrenal mass being a metastasis is

Expression of endomucin, a novel endothelial sialomucin, in normal and diseased human skin.

Endomucin is an endothelial sialomucin that was recently identified with the help of monoclonal antibodies raised against mouse endothelial cells. Cloning of human endomucin allowed us to generate monoclonal antibodies against soluble recombinant forms of human endomucin. In this study, we investigated the expression of this novel molecule in human skin under different conditions, using the monoclonal antibodies. In normal human skin, endomucin was detected for the monoclonal antibody L6H10 by immunoblotting, and immunohistologic analysis of wax-embedded sections revealed that this glycoprotei

Lipomatous hemangiopericytoma. A histologic, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of a unique variant of hemangiopericytoma.

We report three cases of a unique, previously undescribed soft tissue tumor composed of mature adipocytes and hemangiopericytomatous areas, for which we propose the term lipomatous hemangiopericytoma. The tumors occurred in adults and were located in the sinonasal area, the soft tissue of the shoulder, and the retroperitoneum. The tumors ranged in size from 4 to 10 cm in greatest diameter and grossly were solid and ranged from tan to yellow. Histologically, they were composed of a variable admixture of benign lipomatous and hemangiopericytomatous components. Immunohistochemically, they stained

Posterior mediastinal angiomyxolipoma with spinal canal extension.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyxolipoma is a benign tumor considered as a variant of lipoma and that occurs mainly in the subcutis. The mediastinal location hasn't been previously reported. AIM: To describe the radiological features of this tumor in its posterior mediastinal location and to confront them to the pathological features. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 49-year-old woman who was admitted for chest wall pain and neurologic disturbance of her two lower limbs. The chest X-ray showed a posterior mediastinal opacity. On CT examination, this mass contained some small areas of fat and enhanced

Telocytes/CD34+ Stromal Cells in Pathologically Affected White Adipose Tissue.

We studied telocytes/CD34+ stromal cells (TCs/CD34+SCs) in pathologically affected white adipose tissue after briefly examining them in normal fat. To this aim, we reviewed pathological processes, including original contributions, in which TCs/CD34+SCs are conserved, increased, and lost, or acquire a specific arrangement. The pathologic processes in which TCs/CD34+SCs are studied in adipose tissue include inflammation and repair through granulation tissue, iatrogenic insulin-amyloid type amyloidosis, non-adipose tissue components (nerve fascicles and fibres in neuromas and hyperplastic neuroge

Oncocytic lipoadenoma of submandibular gland: a case report.

Lipomatous tumours of salivary glands are very uncommonly diagnosed and reported tumours. Majority of these tumours present as painless masses which grow slowly over many years. On the histological grounds, they can be subclassified into "monophasic" (lipoma component only) and "biphasic" (lipoma component+epithelial component) tumours. A handful of biphasic tumours contain oncocytic component and they have been omitted from the WHO classification of salivary gland tumours so far and this has remained a matter of persistent confusion and controversy over many years. Other rare variants of mono

Male breast disease: pictorial review with radiologic-pathologic correlation.

The male breast is susceptible to many of the same pathologic processes as the female breast. Many of these conditions have mammographic, ultrasonographic (US), and magnetic resonance imaging findings that allow differentiation between clearly benign conditions and those that require biopsy. Gynecomastia is the most common abnormality of the male breast and has characteristic imaging features that usually allow differentiation from malignancy. Mammography is the initial imaging modality for a clinically suspicious mass. A palpable mass that is occult or incompletely imaged at mammography manda

Fat-containing soft-tissue masses in children.

The diagnosis of soft-tissue masses in children can be difficult because of the frequently nonspecific clinical and imaging characteristics of these lesions. However key findings on imaging can aid in diagnosis. The identification of macroscopic fat within a soft-tissue mass narrows the differential diagnosis considerably and suggests a high likelihood of a benign etiology in children. Fat can be difficult to detect with sonography because of the variable appearance of fat using this modality. Fat is easier to recognize using MRI, particularly with the aid of fat-suppression techniques. Althou

Lumbar nerve root compression due to extradural, intraforaminal lipoma. An underdiagnosed entity?

Intraspinal extradural lipomas, not associated with spinal dysraphism, are rare lesions. True adult lipomas have to be distinguished from angiolipomas and from epidural lipomatosis. The authors report a unique case of a patient with unilateral lumbar nerve root compression caused by extradural, intraforaminal, true adult lipoma. A 62-year-old woman suffered severe left L-5 radiculopathy that progressively worsened during the 12 months prior to presentation. She did not experience improvement with conservative therapy. An MR imaging study of the lumbar spine revealed shifting of the left L-5 ne

Differential expression of connective tissue growth factor gene in cutaneous fibrohistiocytic and vascular tumors.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a member of a family of immediate early gene products that may play an important role during tissue regeneration, wound repair and skin fibrosis. In this study, CTGF gene expression in mesenchymal tumors was investigated by in situ hybridization and CD34 antigen expression was studied by means of immunohistochemical staining. CTGF mRNA was expressed in fibroblasts of all nine dermatofibromas examined, but five of seven dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) or two cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma were negative for its expression. In contrast, CD

The soft-tissue tumours induced in Syrian hamsters by herpes simplex virus type 1 and a chemical promoter.

Adult male Syrian hamsters were inoculated subcutaneously with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1, 10(6) PFU) or ultraviolet-inactivated HSV-1. One week later 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA, 2 x 20 nmol weekly) was topically applied to the dorsal skin at the site of virus inoculation for 6 months. Control animals received HSV-1 only or topical treatment with TPA in acetone or acetone alone. Small tumour nodules developed in the HSV-1 group close to the site of virus inoculation 10-15 months after the beginning of the experiment. The neoplasms were classified as angiolipomas, chondro

Distinctive morphology of renal cell carcinomas in tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis complex results from mutations in 1 of 2 interacting gene products, hamartin or tuberin. The syndrome is characterized by hamartomas and neoplastic lesions, including angiomyolipomas of the kidney and other organs. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in tuberous sclerosis remains relatively poorly characterized because historical studies were confounded by the inclusion of epithelioid angiomyolipomas. The authors present a patient with tuberous sclerosis and bilateral renal lesions, including multiple minute angiomyolipomas, cortical cysts, and 4 separate RCCs of unclassified type. T

Leiomyosarcoma With Dedifferentiation Mimicking a Benign Neoplasm.

Superficial leiomyosarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that typically presents as a firm, painful nodule in adults older than 50 years. We report a unique case of a 35-year-old woman with a slow-growing, mobile, subcutaneous nodule on the upper arm, initially presumed to be a benign lesion, most likely an angiolipoma. After excisional biopsy, histopathologic evaluation revealed an intermediate-grade leiomyosarcoma with focal dedifferentiation, demonstrating an abrupt transition from well-differentiated leiomyosarcoma to a high-grade, immunophenotypically undifferentiated sarcoma. Immunohisto

Benign Lipomatous Soft Tissue Tumors in Nigerians: An Analysis of the Clinical and Morphological Features of a Common but Important Entity.

Introduction Benign lipomatous tumors are soft tissue tumors that exhibit a predominant adipocytic phenotype. Lipomas are the archetype and are the most common benign soft tissue tumors in adults but relatively uncommon in children. Their sex incidence is equivocal. They sometimes occur in combination with other mesenchymal elements, giving rise to variants including fibrolipoma, angiolipoma, myolipoma, spindle cell lipoma, chondroid lipoma, osteolipoma, and chondrolipoma. Their clinical significance is mainly due to the cosmetic disfigurement of patients and the differential diagnosis of mali

Intravenous Lobular Capillary Hemangioma: A Case Report and Proposal for New Cutaneous Tender Tumor Differential Diagnosis Acronym.

Here, we report a case of a 70-year-old female who presented with a slowly enlarging tender nodule on the right forearm for several months. Physical examination showed a faintly blue-tinged freely mobile subcutaneous nodule. Excision was complicated by greater than expected bleeding and revealed an unexpected intravenous mass. Histopathology demonstrated capillary lobules separated by fibrous septae within a vein, consistent with intravenous lobular capillary hemangioma (IVLCH). IVLCH is a rare benign capillary proliferation of unclear etiology. Excision is typically curative and relieves any

Spectrum of Fat-containing Soft-Tissue Masses at MR Imaging: The Common, the Uncommon, the Characteristic, and the Sometimes Confusing.

Fat-containing tumors are the most common soft-tissue tumors encountered clinically. The vast majority of fat-containing soft-tissue masses are benign. Lipomas are the most common benign fat-containing masses and demonstrate a characteristic appearance at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Less common benign soft-tissue masses include lipoblastoma, angiolipoma, spindle cell lipoma/pleomorphic lipoma, myolipoma, chondroid lipoma, lipomatosis of nerve, lipomatosis, hibernoma, and fat necrosis. Well-differentiated liposarcomas (WDLPSs)/atypical lipomatous tumors (ALTs) are locally aggressive soft-t

A case of angiomyolipoma of the renal sinus.

The case of a 63-year-old woman with a relatively rapidly growing angiomyolipoma (AML) originating from the right renal sinus is presented. The tumor had enlarged to more than fivefold in volume (7.4 × 6.7 × 10.1 cm) in the 7 years following its detection (5.6 × 3.4 × 4.6 cm) and had significantly pushed aside the duodenum and the inferior vena cava. The tumor was surgically resected together with the right kidney, and pathological examination revealed AML originating from the renal sinus. An AML involving or originating from the renal sinus is exceedingly rare; only 14 cases have been reporte
