Helicobacter spp. in wild mice (Peromyscus leucopus) found in laboratory animal facilities.

Wild rodents are a potential source for pathogen introduction into laboratory animal research facilities. A study was designed to assess wild mice found at our institution by infectious disease surveillance. Wild white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were captured with live capture traps placed in areas in which wild mice had been reported in several animal facilities. Captured animals were euthanized by inhalation of CO(2), blood was collected by cardiocentesis (n = 10), and necropsy was performed (n = 8). Serum samples were negative for antibodies to mouse parvovirus (types 1 and 2), mouse

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Possible transmission to humans by consumption of wild animal brains.

Although the natural mode of spread of the agent responsible for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is unknown, several reports suggest oral transmission through consumption of contaminated food or brain. This report summarizes four cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in which a history of eating the brains of wild goat or squirrel was obtained. These cases support the hypothesis of possible acquisition of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease by ingestion of the agent from a presumptive reservoir in the central nervous system of wild animals.

From Barns to Bushes: Exploring the ECOFF-Based Non-Wild-Type Status of Campylobacter spp. in Pets, Livestock, Synanthropic Birds and Wild Animals in Northwestern Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to both humans and animals. Zoonotic bacteria, such as Campylobacter, contribute to human infections and the spread of AMR, particularly through livestock, pets and wildlife. We investigated the prevalence, distribution and EUCAST ECOFF-based wild-type (WT) vs. non-wild-type (NWT) phenotypes in Campylobacter spp. isolated from different animal species in northwestern Italy, between 2014 and 2023. METHODS: Stool samples from owned dogs, livestock, wildlife and synanthropic birds were collected for Campylobacter isolation.

Gastrointestinal parasites of captive and free-ranging wild animals in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Wild animals are hosts for many species of parasites which act as opportunistic or primary agents of disease. This study investigated the presence of endoparasites in the gastrointestinal tracts of wild animals from the State of Mato Grosso do Sul in the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, and Pantanal biomes. From October 2022 to June 2024, fecal samples were collected from wild animals at two locations: Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CRAS) in Campo Grande and the Paragem Municipal Natural Park (PNMP) in Dourados. A total of 109 fecal samples were collected: 96 from CRAS and 13 from PNMP and technique

CD4 binding site immunogens elicit heterologous anti-HIV-1 neutralizing antibodies in transgenic and wild-type animals.

Passive transfer of broadly neutralizing anti-HIV-1 antibodies (bNAbs) protects against infection, and therefore, eliciting bNAbs by vaccination is a major goal of HIV-1 vaccine efforts. bNAbs that target the CD4 binding site (CD4bs) on HIV-1 Env are among the most broadly active, but to date, responses elicited against this epitope in vaccinated animals have lacked potency and breadth. We hypothesized that CD4bs bNAbs resembling the antibody IOMA might be easier to elicit than other CD4bs antibodies that exhibit higher somatic mutation rates, a difficult-to-achieve mechanism to accommodate En

Aspergillus and aspergilloses in wild and domestic animals: a global health concern with parallels to human disease.

The importance of aspergillosis in humans and various animal species has increased over the last decades. Aspergillus species are found worldwide in humans and in almost all domestic animals and birds as well as in many wild species, causing a wide range of diseases from localized infections to fatal disseminated diseases, as well as allergic responses to inhaled conidia. Some prevalent forms of animal aspergillosis are invasive fatal infections in sea fan corals, stonebrood mummification in honey bees, pulmonary and air sac infection in birds, mycotic abortion and mammary gland infections in

Rabies in Greece; historical perspectives in view of the current re-emergence in wild and domestic animals.

Greece has been rabies free since 1987 while no human cases have been seen since 1970. The re-emergence of rabies in Northern Greece during 2012-2013 in wild and domestic animals prompted a systematic review of historical evidence of the presence of the disease in the country from ancient years till the present. Historical data is presented along with efforts to prevent disease in animals and humans especially during the high prevalent periods in the country in the mid-20th century. These efforts serve as a guide to current extensive efforts to prevent spread especially in the wild and domesti

Viruses other than arenaviruses from West African wild mammals. Factors affecting transmission to man and domestic animals.

At least thirty-seven different viruses have been isolated from wild mammals in West Africa since 1962. Some of these, including Lassa virus, are already known to cause serious human morbidity and mortality. Crimean haemorrhagic fever-Congo virus, Dugbe virus, Mokola virus, and a smallpox-like agent from a gerbil in Dahomey are briefly discussed. An account of social and ecologic factors affecting man, domestic animals, and their interaction with wild mammals is given.

The health threat of wild animals by Rank I ARGs from habitat soils: Metagenomic and metabolomic evidence.

Human disturbance (HD) leads to the enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a threat to the health of wild animals. However, not all ARGs necessarily endanger wild animals' health. Therefore, this study used the golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) as a sentinel species, and employed metagenomics to investigate the impact of high-risk ARGs (Rank Ⅰ ARGs) from habitats on wild animals' health. Subsequently, we studied the expression of metabolites within the metabolic network harboring homologous functional genes based on metabolomics. The results indicated that o

The contribution of bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) in the investigation of crimes against domestic and wild animals.

Crimes against domestic and wild animals represent a growing global concern that introduces unique investigative challenges. Although Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) is a well-established discipline in human-centric forensics, its potential within veterinary medicine remains significantly underutilized. To bridge this critical gap, this review moves from foundational theory to the practical application of BPA in animal-related contexts. First, the article establishes the scientific validity of this application by demonstrating that fluid dynamic differences between human and animal blood are

Longitudinal study of wild koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) reveals chlamydial disease progression in two thirds of infected animals.

Chlamydial disease threatens many of Australia's koala populations, and yet our understanding of chlamydial epidemiology and disease dynamics in koalas is limited by a lack of comprehensive, longitudinal population studies. To address this, we utilised longitudinal samples from a large-scale population study of wild koalas in south-east Queensland, to follow chlamydial infections over time and to investigate some of the drivers of disease progression. Our findings show, firstly, that almost two thirds of chlamydial infections progressed to disease, challenging the notion that chlamydial infect
