Katz described a design for a postcataract spectacle lens with two aspheric surfaces. Previously, von Rohr and Jeffree had patented designs with similar optical properties, but using steeper lens forms than the Katz design. These three design studies are compared with two aspheric spectacle lenses that have been produced commercially in order to demonstrate the differences in calculated aberrations and their significance on the practicality of a lens design.

The current modality for correcting unilateral aphakia is by the use of daily wear hard and soft contact lenses and by the use of intraocular lens implants. The use of the Cooper Permalens soft contact lens as an extended wear lens for correction of aphakia was investigated in 177 eyes. The relative merits of the extended wear lens are discussed with emphasis on fit, visual function, and contact lens-related problems.

Hard contact lens correction of aphakia is best performed with a single cut lens by a trial lens fitting. Lenticular design may be necessary. Continuous wear over age 70 may be necessary to achieve success and acceptance in more than 30% of aphakic wearers. Soft lenses are usually not practical in the author's experience. The increased use of intraocular lenses is decreasing the need for aphakic contact lenses. Merits of the hard contact lens in aphakia are discussed as a practical approach to the correction of vision by the ophthalmologist, and indications for single cut lenses and lenticular…

The calculation of magnification differences is treated well in a number of texts, 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 but the formulas are not always presented in their most convenient form. Because of this, many complex schemes have been illustrated 2 and many different versions have been published. 3, 4, 5. The purpose of this paper is to present the pertinent equations in a simplified manner and to illustrate them by a specific example, namely, the case of monocular aphakia.

Four possibilities are offered to provide a good correction for aphakic individuals: no correction at all; spectacles; more than 60% adopt this solution, the contact lens which has optical, functional and aesthetic advantages. The intra-ocular lens (the best solution, but it is, not without complications). Since 1956 we have followed up 588 unilateral aphakians. Tolerance of contact lenses after one year is excellent: 61% wear the contact lenses 10-12 hrs. per day, 18% wear them 6-8 hrs. per day and 21% lost courage. There is a parallel between binocular vision and tolerance, which decreased o…

PURPOSE: To study the incidence of aphakia after cataract surgery, the surgical complications that can lead to it, and the visual outcome.
SETTING: Six community-run eye clinics participating in the Swedish National Cataract Register.
METHODS: Data on cataract extractions were collected prospectively from 1997 through 2001. The data also covered the type of surgery and type of intraocular lens, including a "no lens implanted" option. All data were stored in a database. These data were supplemented with data on the intended type of surgery, type of complications, possible second surgery, and …

BACKGROUND: We report the results of the secondary implantation of retroiridally fixated irisclaw-lenses (Artisan(R)) to correct aphakia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included all eyes that had undergone outpatient implantation of an Artisan IOL by the senior author (MK) between July 2004 and January 2008. We analysed 48 eyes of 46 patients (27 female, 19 male) aged 17 to 87 years. Underlying conditions were: aphakia after congenital cataract or trauma (19 eyes), late luxation of a posterior chamber IOL (16 eyes), intraoperative zonulolysis during cataract surgery that did n…

The article shows a comparative study between two groups of 50 patients operated for cataract in 1990 and 1995. In both of these groups aphakia was corrected with aerian lenses. The study was made to demonstrate the visual problems due to strong convergent lenses, to shows the difficult adaptation to this kind of spectacles and to determine the degree of dissatisfaction of the spectacles wear aphak.
