Unwanted astigmatism in lenses with a concentric variation in sagittal power.

A concentric variation in sagittal power, Fs, with zonal radius, y, has been used in some designs of varifocal and aphakic spectacle lenses. It is shown theoretically, using a paraxial approximation, that a gradient dFs/dy in sagittal power leads to the introduction of an amount y.dFs/dy of unwanted astigmatism. The validity of this result is illustrated experimentally.

Histopathologic examination of a globe containing an intraocular implant.

A patient had both cataracts removed and a Copeland pseudophakos was implanted in one eye. Both globes were retained at autopsy for histopathologic study. The globe containing the implant did not show evidence of acute or chronic inflammation of the anterior segment, nor did it display signs suggesting secondary glaucoma. Some erosion of the iris pigment epithelium was present. In general, the globe appeared to tolerate the implant.

Enhancement of the sensitivity of the peripheral visual field of aphakic eyes by a soft contact lens correction.

Goldman perimetric field examination was done on 42 glaucomatous eyes, with aphakic spectacles and a soft lens correction. There was a 79% +/- 20% SD overall average enhancement of field size with the soft lens, but the difference varied linearly as a direct function of the initial spectacle field size. There appears to be a significant advantage to the patient in the use of soft lens correction for serial peripheral field measurements.

[Artificial lens implantations of Medallion - lenses (author's transl)].

Description of the surgical technique of artificial lens implantations extra- and intracapsularly. Only the original Medallion -lens for flexible suture fixation and the "slotted" Medallion - lens for steel suture fixation will be described with brief mention of Platina clip lens for extra-capsular surgery, the Small incision lens, the Three loop lens and the Boomerang lens.

Stereoscopic acuity measurement in aphakia.

We performed a variety of tests to assess binocular function on monocular aphakic patients wearing contact lenses, monocular pseudophakic patients, bilateral spectacle-wearing aphakic patients, bilateral aphakic contact lens wearers, and bilateral pseudophakic patients. Stereoscopic acuity levels at distance and near when visual acuity was at least 6/12 (20/40) provided the most useful data. Pseudophakic patients and contact lens wearers performed equally well and outperformed spectacle wearers. Implant patients did not have superior stereoscopic acuity.

Refractive growth variability in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study.

PURPOSE: Prediction of refraction after cataract surgery in children is limited by the variance in rate of refractive growth (RRG3). This study compared RRG3 in aphakic and pseudophakic eyes with their fellow, normal eyes in the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study. SETTING: Twelve clinical sites in the United States. DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial. METHODS: Infants randomized to unilateral cataract extraction had RRG3 calculated based on biometric data (axial length and keratometry) at cataract surgery and at 10 years of age, for both the normal and cataract eyes. Subjects were included if co
