Torsemide is commonly used to relieve edema during the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) with arsenic trioxide (ATO). We explored the effect of torsemide on the plasma concentrations of inorganic arsenic (iAs), monomethylarsonic acid (MMAV) and dimethyarsinic acid (DMAV) in APL patients treated with ATO and clarified its molecular mechanism in rats and cells. The study included 146 APL patients treated with ATO. 60(41.1 %) of these 146 patients were co-administered with torsemide. The treatment of torsemide increased plasma concentrations of iAs (P < 0.05) and DMAV (P < 0.05) in …

There is global concern that rice grains and foods can contain harmful amounts of arsenic (As), motivating breeders to produce cultivars that restrict As accumulation in grains to protect human health. Arsenic is also toxic to plants, with straighthead disorder (StHD), causing panicle sterility, being observed in rice. The genetic variation in StHD resistance suggests that plants have evolved mechanisms that reduce As toxicity, possibly via regulation of As uptake, transport, or detoxification/sequestration. Because these mechanisms could also underlie the wide (3- to 100-fold) differences in …

The presence of arsenic in natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons is of great concern for oil companies. In addition to health risks due to its toxicity as well as environmental issues, arsenic is responsible for irreversible poisoning of catalysts and clogging of pipes via the accumulation of As-containing precipitates. To address these problems and to better design treatment units, robust methods for the analysis of arsenic and its compounds in oil streams are required. In addition, the use of feedstocks as a novel source of energy is becoming increasingly important. Most biomasses used as feed…

Cryptococcal meningitis is the most common central nervous system infection in the world today. It occurs primarily, but not exclusively, in immunocompromised individuals and despite substantial improvement in management of clinical events like AIDS, the numbers of cases of cryptococcosis remain very high. Unfortunately, despite several antifungal agents available for treatment, morbidity and mortality rates remain high with this fungal infection. In this Review, we will describe the treatments and strategies for success, identify the failures, and provide insights into the future developments

The purpose of this article is to review the detail concentration of arsenic in some species of mushrooms as well as organic and inorganic forms of arsenic in the substrates where wild and cultivated edible mushrooms grow. We also briefly review the molecular forms of arsenic in mushrooms. There is still a lack of experimental data from the environment for a variety of species from different habitats and for different levels of geogenic arsenic in soil. This information will be useful for mushrooms consumers, nutritionists, and food regulatory agencies by describing ways to minimize arsenic co…

Parasitoid wasps are among the most diverse insects on earth with many species causing major mortality in host populations. Parasitoids introduce a variety of factors into hosts to promote parasitism, including symbiotic viruses, venom, teratocytes and wasp larvae. Polydnavirus-carrying wasps use viruses to globally suppress host immunity and prevent rejection of developing parasites. Although prior results provide detailed insights into the genes viruses deliver to hosts, little is known about other products. RNAseq and proteomics were used to characterize the proteins secreted by venom gland

Manganese oxides reduce arsenic (As) toxicity by promoting aqueous-phase As(III) oxidation and immobilization in natural aquatic ecosystems. In anaerobic water-sediment systems, arsenic exists both in a free state in the liquid phase and in an adsorbed state on iron (Fe) minerals. However, the influence of different manganese oxides on the fate of As in this system remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, we constructed an anaerobic microbial As(V) reduction environment and investigated the effects of three different manganese oxides on the fate of both aqueous-phase and goethite-adsorbed As…

A huge amount of soil is excavated by tunnel and road construction projects in urban, coastal, and mountainous regions. These projects enable the effective use of underground spaces, and generally, the excavated soil is expected to be reused after treatment, which is required due to the potential release of geogenic arsenic from the soil. The present study investigated the level of water-soluble arsenic and arsenic phases in excavated soil in order to identify how arsenic is immobilized by soluble calcium and insoluble components in steel slag. The soluble calcium was found to suppress the lev…

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a significant global public health challenge, with environmental toxins potentially contributing to its prevalence. In Taiwan, where arsenic (As) contamination is endemic in certain areas, assessing its impact on renal health is crucial due to the country's high rates of unexplained CKD. This cross-sectional study assessed associations between urinary As species and early renal impairment biomarkers-the microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) and β2-microglobulin (B2MG)-in 248 young Taiwanese adults (aged 20-29 years). We measured urinary As species (including…

Soil particle sizes and mineral phases play a major role in the migration of arsenic (As) in mine. In this study, soil As fractionation and mineralogical composition in different particle sizes soil at naturally mineralized and anthropogenically disturbed zones from an abandoned mine were comprehensively studied. The results showed that soil As contents in anthropogenically disturbed mining zone (MZ), processing zone (PZ), and smelting zone (SZ) were increased with decreasing of soil particle sizes. The contents of As in the fine soil particles (0.45-2 μm) reached to 850-4800 mg·kg-1, which ma…

Poorly-soluble phosphate rock (PR) and CaCO3 can enhance arsenic accumulation in calcicolous As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata, but their mechanisms under soil conditions remain unclear. P. vittata was grown for two months in As-contaminated soil (100 mg kg-1) receiving 2.0 g kg-1 Ca as PR, CaCO3, or soluble CaCl2. Plant nutrients, rhizosphere chemistry and bacterial communities, and As-metabolism genes were examined. Compared with CaCO3, PR increased frond As and P by 35% and 28% to 3128 and 3158 mg kg-1, while CaCO3 produced slightly greater biomass and 10-15% higher rhizosphere available A…

Inorganic arsenic exposure has been linked to the development of several health conditions, including adverse birth outcomes; and around 150 million of people worldwide are exposed to levels above the WHO suggested limit of 10 μg/L. A recent risk assessment in pregnant women of Tacna, of this same population performed by our group, found that 70.25% were exposed to arsenic concentrations in drinking water ≥25 μg/L. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between prenatal total urinary arsenic (U-tAs) and inorganic arsenic (U-iAs) with adverse birth outcomes. A total of 147 pregnan…

BACKGROUND: Arsenic (As) is an extremely hazardous trace metalloid frequently found in water bodies, where it poses substantial threats to all living organisms, including fish. Its removal has therefore become a significant global challenge.
METHODS: We explored the adsorptive capacity of a copper 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate metal-organic framework supported on rice husk-derived activated carbon (Cu-BDC@AC) nanocomposite toward As toxicity in Oreochromis niloticus. Fish were exposed to As (5 mg/L), the nanocomposite (NP, 1 mg/L), or both (As + NP) via water for 3 weeks. Serum biochemical paramet…

Environmental pollution caused by arsenic or its compounds is called arsenic pollution. Arsenic pollution mainly comes from people's mining and smelting of arsenic compounds. In addition, the widespread use of arsenic compounds, such as the use and production of arsenic-containing pesticides, is also a source of arsenic contamination. Arsenic contamination leads to an increased risk of arsenic exposure, and the multi-organ toxicity induced by arsenic exposure is a global health problem. As a non-mammalian vertebrate with high nutrient levels, chickens readily absorb and accumulate arsenic from…
