Morning surge in blood pressure and blood pressure variability in Asia: Evidence and statement from the HOPE Asia Network.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. To effectively prevent end-organ damage, maintain vascu … ces in hypertension and related cardiovascular disease rates have been reported between Western and Asian populations, including a higher rate of stroke, higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome, greater salt sensitivity and more common high morning and nocturnal BP readings in Asians. This highlights a need for BP management strategies that take into a …

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring profiles in Asia.

High blood pressure (BP) remains a major health problem globally, with a proportion of hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) increasing worldwide including in Asia region. Cardiovascular (CV), cerebral and kidney diseases related to hypertension were reported to be closely associated with morning surge and nocturnal hypertension-a subset of BP variability-which can be detected by out-of-office BP measurement. Ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) and Home BP monitoring (HBPM) have been recommended by major guidelines to be used in the evaluation of BP variability and outcomes' prediction of hype…

Asia Pacific road transportation emissions, 1900-2050.

Asia Pacific (AP) is the largest regional vehicle market and accounted for 48% of global sales in 2019. Air quality is a pressing issue in many AP countries and together with increased vehicle sales has led to intense scrutiny of vehicle emissions. The heterogeneity of socio-economic features and transportation patterns in AP countries has resulted in different emission levels and control policies. We present an assessment of the historical and future emissions of on-road transportation and strategies to tackle emission challenges. First, we collected historical country-level population, econo…

Japanese Encephalitis: Estimating Future Trends in Asia.

Limited surveillance programs and lack of diagnostic laboratory testing capacity in many low and middle income Asian countries have made it difficult to validate epidemiological patterns and anticipate future changes in disease risk. In this study, we consider the case of Japanese Encephalitis in Asia and examine how populations of human hosts and animal reservoirs are expected to change over the next three decades. Growth was modelled at the sub-national level for rural and urban areas to estimate where high-density, susceptible populations will potentially overlap with populations of the vir…

Can visceral leishmaniasis be eliminated from Asia?

Data on the burden of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Indian sub-continent are vital for elimination programme planners for estimating resource requirements, effective implementation and monitoring of elimination programme. In Indian sub-continent, about 200 million population is at risk of VL. Nearly 25,000-40,000 cases and 200-300 deaths are reported every year, but these are grossly underestimates. Recent well-designed multicentric studies identified VL burden of 21 cases/10,000 among sampled population in Indian sub-continent (Bangladesh, India and Nepal). This estimates 4,20,000 cases per

Community-acquired acute kidney injury in Asia.

Asia, the largest continent in the world, is heterogeneous in the ethnic, socioeconomic, and developmental status of its populations. A vast majority of it is poor with no adequate access to modern health care, making an accurate estimation of the nature and extent of acute kidney injury (AKI) difficult. Community-acquired AKI in otherwise healthy individuals is common, and the population developing AKI is younger compared with its counterparts in Europe or North America. The etiologic spectrum varies in different geographic regions of Asia depending on environmental, cultural, and socioeconom…

Hematologic disorders in children from southeast Asia.

The overall laboratory features of the common RBC disorders occurring in Southeast Asians is summarized in Table 4. These erythrocyte disorders will continue to be important public health issues, and it has been predicted that most new cases of thalassemia in the United States will occur in this population group. The fertility rate in Southeast Asian families is very high, with an average of more than five children delivered by each married woman. This number of children is consistent with perceptions of ideal family size, and, to date, no evidence suggests any change in the size of Southeast …

Disseminated Penicillium marneffei infection in southeast Asia.

Disseminated infection with the fungal pathogen Penicillium marneffei is, after extrapulmonary tuberculosis and cryptococcal meningitis, the third most common opportunistic infection in HIV disease in northern Thailand. We report the clinical, microbiological, and therapeutic features of a large series of HIV-infected adults with disseminated P marneffei infection. From August, 1987, to June, 1992, 92 patients with P marneffei infection confirmed by culture were seen at Chiang Mai University Hospital, of whom 86 were also infected with HIV. Clinical information was available for 80 of these pa

Moyamoya disease beyond Japan and East Asia.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) was first described in Japan and is primarily recognized in East Asia. Although rare, it is increasingly diagnosed in Western countries. A Western phenotype - characterized by a lower risk of hemorrhage - has been proposed in a previous review article in this journal. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review explores MMD from a Western perspective. RESULTS: Drawing partly on studies from a Danish MMD cohort, the author suggests that MMD exhibits similar features across different regions. Nordic national registries and well-maintained clinical records provide valua…

Postgraduate family medicine training in Southeast Asia.

Family medicine is a medical discipline that has been recognised globally for nearly six decades. Postgraduate family medicine training was introduced more recently in Southeast Asia. This article presents the characteristics of postgraduate family medicine training in eight Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The duration of training varies across countries and programmes within each country, ranging from 1 to 5 years. Completion of training leads to qualifications such as master's degree, diploma or certificate. Som…

Human trichinellosis in Southeast Asia, 2001-2021.

To present the situation of human trichinellosis in Southeast Asia in the last 20th years we analyzed outbreak data and seroprevalence studies from 2001 to 2021 for this region. We queried PubMed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) using keywords "Trichinella", "human" and "Southeast Asia". In addition, we described Trichinella species circulating in this region. In Southeast Asia, in communities eating pork, several cultural factors play important roles in the transmission of Trichinella to humans. The seroprevalences of Trichinella infection in humans are known for Laos and Vietnam to be 0-10.…
