Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Perform Differently on Pediatric Concussion Assessment.

OBJECTIVE: To compare Child Sport Concussion Assessment Tool Fifth Edition (Child SCAT5) performance between uninjured children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and precisely matched controls without ADHD. STUDY DESIGN: A nested case-control study was conducted within a cohort of middle school athletes (age 11-12 years) who completed preseason testing. Students with ADHD were individually matched to students without ADHD based on age, sex, language spoken at home, number of prior concussions, sport, and school they attended. The final sample included 54 students (27 with A

Leg Movement Activity During Sleep in Adults With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Objectives: To conduct a first detailed analysis of the pattern of leg movement (LM) activity during sleep in adult subjects with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) compared to healthy controls. Methods: Fifteen ADHD patients and 18 control subjects underwent an in-lab polysomnographic sleep study. The periodic character of LMs was evaluated with established markers of "periodicity," i.e., the periodicity index, intermovement intervals, and time distribution of LM during sleep, in addition to standard parameters such as the periodic leg movement during sleep index (PLMSI) and the

No objectively measured sleep disturbances in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The main goal of this study was to gain more insight into sleep disturbances in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, using objective measures of sleep quality and quantity. The evidence for sleep problems in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder thus far is inconsistent, which might be explained by confounding influences of comorbid internalizing and externalizing problems and low socio-economic status. We therefore investigated the mediating and moderating role of these factors in the association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and sleep pr

Rapid Naming in Brazilian Students with Dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The effective development of reading and writing skills requires the concerted action of several abilities, one of which is phonological processing. One of the main components of phonological processing is rapid automatized naming (RAN)-the ability to identify and recognize a given item by the activation and concomitant articulation of its name. OBJECTIVE: To assess the RAN performance of schoolchildren with dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared with their peers. METHODS: In total, 70 schoolchildren aged between 8 and 11 years participated in the

Transdermal therapy for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder with the methylphenidate patch (MTS).

Transdermal technology is currently approved in the US for the administration of more than 20 medications. This current review describes the clinical research pertaining to the use of a methylphenidate patch in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents. PubMed searches were conducted using the search term 'methylphenidate transdermal system', and were limited to clinical trials. No limits were set for dates of publication. A total of 21 citations were identified. Studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of the methylphenidate transdermal sys

[Effectiveness of neuropsychological training in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)].

Recently published studies on the effects of neuropsychological training in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) reflect our present knowledge about the pathogenesis of the disorder. This review article collects the results of published treatment studies drawn from a MEDLINE search. Because of the restricted number of available studies we considered randomized studies as well as studies with a lower evidence level, including case reports. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the study samples, we restrict our interpretation of the study results to the application of vari

Risk of serious cardiovascular problems with medications for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity. The proportion of patients diagnosed with ADHD receiving pharmacological treatments has increased enormously in recent years. Despite the well established efficacy and the good safety and tolerability profile, there is concern about the potential for rare but serious cardiovascular adverse events, as well as sudden cardiac death, with pharmacotherapies used for treating ADHD in children, adolescents and adults. The prese

[Cardiovascular risks and management during Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder treatment with methylphenidate].

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common of the pediatric neuropsychiatric disorders. Methylphenidate is an important element of therapeutic strategies for ADHD. Clinicians are interested in the safety of methylphenidate. Because this drug raises heart rate and blood pressure, concerns have been raised about its cardiovascular safety. Concerns were based on case reports of sudden cardiac death in methylphenidate users, plausible pharmacological pathways involving well-established stimulant effects on heart rate and blood pressure. Until recently, data were limi

Psychiatric comorbidities in adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and their siblings.

OBJECTIVE: Despite high psychiatric comorbidities in adolescents with clinical diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), little is known about psychiatric comorbidities in their siblings. We investigated the psychiatric comorbid conditions in adolescents with ADHD, their siblings, and healthy control subjects from their school. METHOD: The sample included 136 adolescent probands with ADHD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), diagnostic criteria; 136 siblings (47 affected and 89 unaffected) and 136 age- and sex-mat

Motor examination in children with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity Disorder and Asperger Syndrome.

AIM: Evaluating whether motor skills could differentiate drug-naive subjects with two neurodevelopmental disorders: Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Asperger Syndrome (AS). METHODS: Thirty-six boys (12 with ADHD, 12 with AS and 12 with typical development) aged 8-12 were evaluated using the Physical and Neurological Examination for Subtle Signs. Three primary outcome variables were obtained as follows: (i) total speed of timed activities, (ii) total overflow and (iii) total dysrhythmia. RESULTS: Children with AS performed more slowly than those with ADHD and healthy childr

The treatment of fetishism in an adolescent with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Fetishism is characterized by recurrent, intense sexual fantasy or behavior involving the use of nonliving objects, such as women's undergarments, over a period of at least six months. This disorder occurs mostly in males and usually begins in adolescence. The neurobiological etiologies of fetishism remain unclear, and studies on treatment were limited. We present a 14- year-old boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with fetishistic behavior who was treated successfully with 36 mg extended-release methylphenidate daily and 4 months of cognitive-rational emotive psychotherapy.

Morphological abnormalities of the thalamus in youths with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The role of the thalamus in the genesis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains poorly understood. The authors used anatomical MRI to examine the morphology of the thalamus in youths with ADHD and healthy comparison youths. METHOD: The authors examined 46 youths with ADHD and 59 comparison youths 8-18 years of age in a cross-sectional case-control study. Conventional volumes and measures of surface morphology of the thalamus served as the main outcome measures. RESULTS: A mixed-effects model comparing whole thalamic volumes revealed no significant differences be

Social competence and friendship formation in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Friendship formation (making friends, keeping friends, and having successful interactions with peers and adults) constitutes a critical developmental-social milestone for adolescents. This process can be especially challenging for adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, whose attentional problems may negatively affect their social skills (verbal and nonverbal language) and who fail to appreciate the complexity and nuances of adolescent communication. They often do not respond to feedback cues. They may be perceived as "immature," lacking empathy, and loners and losers, they

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with obstructive sleep apnea: a treatment outcome study.

BACKGROUND: Children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth edition (DSM-IV) criteria, may also have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but it is unclear whether treating OSA has similar results as methylphenidate (MPH), a commonly used treatment for ADHD. METHODS: This study enrolled 66 school-age children, referred for and diagnosed with ADHD, and 20 healthy controls. Polysomnography (PSG) performed after ADHD diagnosis showed the presence of mild OSA. After otolaryngological evaluation, parents and

Neural substrates of decision making in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The characteristics of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) include abnormalities in reward responsivity that may interfere with decision making. The study examined reward responsivity in ADHD by comparing the neural correlates of decision making in adults with childhood-onset ADHD and in healthy adults. METHOD: The neural correlates of performance on a decision-making task and a control task were compared in 10 adults with ADHD and 12 age-matched healthy volunteers by using [(15)O]H(2)O positron emission tomography. The decision-making task tested the ability to weigh s

A survey of voiding dysfunction in children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

PURPOSE: Physicians treating attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have long had the clinical impression that these children suffer disproportionately from voiding dysfunction and incontinence. However, no data exist to confirm this suspicion. In an attempt to investigate this clinical finding, we administered a survey asking about any functional bladder symptoms to a group of children with ADHD and a control group without ADHD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Survey (DVSS) was administered to a group of children being treated for rigorously diagnosed ADHD a

Major life activity and health outcomes associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

People with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are affected by the disorder throughout their lifetimes. Children with ADHD often have comorbid oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder in addition to having developmental and social problems. The persistence of ADHD into adolescence and young adulthood varies according to who is being interviewed and the criteria used to define the disorder. For those adolescents and adults in whom ADHD does persist, educational difficulties continue, and problems in the areas of employment, driving, and sexual relationships emerge. ADHD i

Time perception and reproduction in young adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 104) were compared with a control group (n = 64) on time estimation and reproduction tasks. Results were unaffected by ADHD subtype or gender. The ADHD group provided larger time estimations than the control group, particularly at long intervals. This became nonsignificant after controlling for IQ. The ADHD group made shorter reproductions than did the control group (15- and 60-s intervals) and greater reproduction errors (12-, 45-, 60-s durations). These differences remained after controlling for IQ and comorbid oppositional defi

High midbrain [18F]DOPA accumulation in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly prevalent childhood psychiatric disorder characterized by impaired attention, excessive motor activity, and impulsivity. Despite extensive investigation of the neuropathophysiology of ADHD by a wide array of methodologies, the neurobiochemical substrate of this disorder is still unknown. Converging evidence, however, suggests a primary role of the dopaminergic system. METHOD: This study examined the integrity of presynaptic dopaminergic function in children with ADHD through use of positron emission tomography and the trac

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among adults with severe and profound mental retardation.

The present study investigated the incidence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in a sample of 86 adults with severe to profound mental retardation. Participants were evaluated by supervisory staff using the diagnostic criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) and Conners' (1990) Hyperactivity Index. Using the most conservative measure, 15% of the sample met the diagnostic criteria. This measure was not influenced by the subjects' chronological age, adaptive age, IQ, or gender.
