Subcortical and Cortical Electrophysiological Measures in Children With Speech-in-Noise Deficits Associated With Auditory Processing Disorders.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the subcortical and cortical auditory evoked potentials for speech stimuli in children with speech-in-noise (SIN) deficits associated with auditory processing disorder (APD) without any reading or language deficits. METHOD: The study included 20 children in the age range of 9-13 years. Ten children were recruited to the APD group; they had below-normal scores on the speech-perception-in-noise test and were diagnosed as having APD. The remaining 10 were typically developing (TD) children and were recruited to the TD group. Speech-evoked subcortical

Assessment of cochlear electrophysiology in typically developing children and children with auditory processing disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Children with auditory processing disorder (APD) are reported to have abnormal auditory brainstem responses (ABR) but little is understood about their cochlear integrity. Poor cochlear integrity can affect neural responses. In this study, cochlear and auditory brainstem integrity was investigated in children with APD. METHOD: Twenty children with APD, sixteen typically developing children and twenty adults participated in this study. Click evoked electrocochleography (ECochG) and ABRs were recorded from all the participants. Cochlear responses were analyzed using a) latency and amp

Auditory processing disorders: relationship to cognitive processes and underlying auditory neural integrity.

BACKGROUND: Auditory processing disorder (APD) in children has been reported and discussed in the clinical and research literature for many years yet there remains poor agreement on diagnostic criteria, the relationship between APD and cognitive skills, and the importance of assessing underlying neural integrity. PURPOSE: The present study used a repeated measures design to examine the relationship between a clinical APD diagnosis achieved with behavioral tests used in many clinics, cognitive abilities measured with standardized tests of intelligence, academic achievement, language, phonology

[Context influence on the perception of dysphonia: when the knowledge of the patient's clinical state can modify the results of perceptual voice quality assessment].

Two experiments were conducted to examine how knowledge of the patient's clinical state affects the results of perceptual voice quality assessment performed by specialists in voice therapy. This study involved 53 patients with a dysphonia. For each speaker, we selected a pair of recordings made in different circumstances. These pairs of voices were presented to seven listeners (ENT surgeons or speech therapists). The task was to perceptually compare the severity of the dysphonia between the 2 recordings of the pair. Stimuli were presented first in a blind test, then several weeks later with ac

Auditory hypersensitivity and processing deficits in a rat model of fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X (FX) syndrome is one of the leading inherited causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A majority of FX and ASD patients exhibit sensory hypersensitivity, including auditory hypersensitivity or hyperacusis, a condition in which everyday sounds are perceived as much louder than normal. Auditory processing deficits in FX and ASD also afford the opportunity to develop objective and quantifiable outcome measures that are likely to translate between humans and animal models due to the well-conserved nature of the auditory system and well-developed behavioral read-outs of sound perception

Congenital amusia persists in the developing brain after daily music listening.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects about 3% of the adult population. Adults experiencing this musical disorder in the absence of macroscopically visible brain injury are described as cases of congenital amusia under the assumption that the musical deficits have been present from birth. Here, we show that this disorder can be expressed in the developing brain. We found that (10-13 year-old) children exhibit a marked deficit in the detection of fine-grained pitch differences in both musical and acoustical context in comparison to their normally developing peers compa

Comparison of Pitch Strength With Perceptual and Other Acoustic Metric Outcome Measures Following Medialization Laryngoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnoses of voice disorders, as well as treatment outcomes, are often tracked using visual (eg, stroboscopic images), auditory (eg, perceptual ratings), objective (eg, from acoustic or aerodynamic signals), and patient report (eg, Voice Handicap Index and Voice-Related Quality of Life) measures. However, many of these measures are known to have low to moderate sensitivity and specificity for detecting changes in vocal characteristics, including vocal quality. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare changes in estimated pitch strength (PS) with other convention

Pseudohallucination and Pilocytic Astrocytoma in the Pons.

BACKGROUND: The pons, a critical structure located in the brainstem, plays a multifaceted role in various neurological functions, and any disruption to its integrity can lead to profound and diverse clinical manifestations. Recent reports have highlighted the association between pontine lesions and conditions such as emotional incontinence, rage, auditory hallucinations, and visual disturbances. We refer to a novel case that causes false hallucinations. We discuss a patient with a tumor in the pons exhibiting a rare constellation of symptoms that included unstable auditory, visual, and percept

Auditory temporal acuity in normally achieving and learning-disabled college students.

Recent research has suggested that deficits in several metalinguistic/phonological abilities, such as short-term verbal memory and phoneme segmentation, may be etiologic factors in specific reading disability, and it has been speculated that these weaknesses may result from a more fundamental deficit in the processing of temporal, auditory stimuli. This study examined the auditory temporal processing skills of reading-disabled, math-disabled, and normally achieving college students. The math-disabled group was included to control for the possibility that poor temporal processing is a "marker"

Beyond motor: a systematic review of multisensory integration deficits in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily characterized by motor symptoms, but non-motor issues, including sensory, perceptual, and cognitive impairment, common, significantly impacting daily functioning. Multisensory integration (MSI), the brain's ability to combine sensory information, is crucial for effective navigation and interaction with the world. In PD, disruptions in MSI can lead to various functional difficulties. This systematic review, conducted by PRISMA guidelines, analyses 40 studies with 2070 participants to investigate MSI in PD. The findings indicate significant deficits in MSI,

A cognitive model of perceptual anomalies: The role of source monitoring, top-down influence and inhibitory processes for hallucinations in schizophrenia spectrum disorders and hallucinatory-like experiences in the general population.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models emphasise that source monitoring, top-down processes, and inhibitory control are mechanisms of perceptual anomalies, particularly auditory hallucinations (AHs) and hallucinatory-like experiences (HLEs). Nonetheless, limited research integrates clinical and non-clinical perceptual anomalies to examine these cognitive mechanisms and the connections between them. The present study aimed to investigate the role of three cognitive processes within the perceptual anomalies continuum. Moreover, the study examines the relationship between perceptual anomalies, cognitive pr

[Clinical symptomatology of epileptic seizures of temporal origin].

Many discrepancies still exist in the description of clinical symptoms and signs attributable to a paroxysmal disorganization of temporal structures. They result from various methodological appraisals of clinical, electrophysiological and neuroradiological data concerning partial epilepsies. However a study of anatomo-electroclinical correlations in temporal seizures yield an easy pattern when the methods of elaboration, the criteria of validity and their meaning are strictly defined. An analysis of temporal seizures, recorded, filmed and described clinically in 300 patients having had a pre-s

Neural mechanisms underlying visual and auditory processing impairments in schizophrenia: insight into the etiology and implications for tailoring preventive and therapeutic interventions.

Schizophrenia is a complex and devastating neuropsychiatric disorder with an unknown etiology. Patients with schizophrenia have a high prevalence of visual disturbances, commonly accompanied by auditory impairments. In recent review articles, the perceptual deficits of visual and auditory sensory processing have been downplayed. However, visual and auditory impairments are associated with hallucinations, which is characteristic of schizophrenia across all cultures. Despite decades of research, the common neural mechanisms underlying hallucinations remain largely unknown. In recent years, neuro

More power to them--statistically, that is: a commentary on Studdert-Kennedy, Mody, and Brady's criticism of a critique.

The power analysis discussed above establishes that it was most unlikely that Mody et al. (1997) could make a meaningful test of the Tallal hypothesis because of inadequate n and failure to specify the effect size. Note that this is a best-case scenario, because the power analysis assumes that the analysis of variance assumptions were within reasonable boundaries (e.g., as specified by Norton's study). This was clearly not the case. In summary, the Mody et al. study fails to meet minimal scientific criteria and makes no meaningful contribution to the literature.

Prevalence and classification of hallucinations in multiple sensory modalities in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Auditory hallucinations are experienced by 60-80% of all patients diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. However, in this patient group, the prevalence of hallucinations in multiple sensory modalities, i.e. multimodal hallucinations (MMHs), is unknown. AIMS: To assess the prevalence of MMHs in patients diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder, data were analyzed from 750 patients who participated in the Dutch Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis (GROUP) study. METHOD: We drew on the section of the CASH (Comprehensive Assessment of Symptoms and History) that pr

Brief Report: Typical Auditory-Motor and Enhanced Visual-Motor Temporal Synchronization in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The perception of subsecond durations in adults with autism spectrum disorder (hereafter 'autism'; n = 25 Experiment 1, n = 21 Experiment 2) and matched typical adults (n = 24 Experiment 1, n = 22 Experiment 2) was examined by requiring participants to perform an action in time with auditory (Experiment 1) or visual (Experiment 2) events. Individuals with autism performed comparably to typical participants in the auditory task and exhibited less temporal error relative to their typical counterparts in the visual task. These findings suggest that perception of subsecond intervals is intact in a
