The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Headache: Biomarkers and Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, the role of the autonomic nervous system in tension-type headache and migraine is reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS: A pathophysiological model for tension-type headache is proposed that is compatible with most physiological and behavioral literature. A treatment protocol is described that follows from this model. For migraine, incorporating autonomic factors into the pathophysiology offers rationales for behavioral interventions that have been shown to be useful in migraine treatment and a biofeedback protocol is proposed.

[A role of the autonomic nervous system in cerebro-cardiac disorders].

The authors consider anatomical/physiological characteristics and a role of different autonomic CNS regions, including insula cortex, amygdala complex, anterior cingulate cortex, ventral medial prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus and epiphysis, involved in the regulation of cardiovascular activity. The damage of these structures, e.g., due to the acute disturbance of cerebral blood circulation, led to arrhythmia, including fatal arrhythmia, in previously intact myocardium; systolic and diastolic dysfunction, ischemic changes considered in the frames of cerebro-cardial syndrome. On the cellular lev

Overview of the Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology of the Autonomic Nervous System.

Comprised of the sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and enteric nervous system, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) provides the neural control of all parts of the body except for skeletal muscles. The ANS has the major responsibility to ensure that the physiological integrity of cells, tissues, and organs throughout the entire body is maintained (homeostasis) in the face of perturbations exerted by both the external and internal environments. Many commonly prescribed drugs, over-the-counter drugs, toxins, and toxicants function by altering transmission within the ANS. …

Autonomous requirements of the Menkes disease protein in the nervous system.

Menkes disease is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder arising from a systemic copper deficiency caused by loss-of-function mutations in a ubiquitously expressed copper transporter, ATP7A. Although this disorder reveals an essential role for copper in the developing human nervous system, the role of ATP7A in the pathogenesis of signs and symptoms in affected patients, including severe mental retardation, ataxia, and excitotoxic seizures, remains unknown. To directly examine the role of ATP7A within the central nervous system, we generated Atp7a(Nes) mice, in which the Atp7a gene was specifically

Toxocara encephalitis presenting with autonomous nervous system involvement.

Human toxocariasis has been reported to cause a broad spectrum of neurological syndromes, including encephalitis, meningitis and meningo-radiculitis. Nevertheless, cerebral infection by Toxocara may go undiagnosed due to its rarity, elusive symptoms and lack of availability of appropriate testing. We report the case of a 54-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and paralytic ileus approximately 3 weeks after having eaten raw snails (a folk remedy for peptic ulcer). Three weeks later, marked eosinophilia ensued, associated with mental clouding, nystagmus, diplopia, peripheral limbs ata

Autonomous nervous system activity in women with detrusor overactivity.

PURPOSE: To identify autonomic dysfunction among patients with urinary incontinence (UI) with or without detrusor overactivity (DO), we measured and compared heart rate variability (HRV) in these groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied HRV in 12 female UI patients with DO (mean age, 57.3+/-11.0 years) and 53 female UI patients without DO (mean age, 56.8+/-9.8 years). HRV parameters were measured by SA-3000P(R). Heart rates, the time domain index, and the frequency domain index were compared. To compare time domain indexes, we used the standard deviation of the N-N interval (SDNN), the squar

Participation of autonomic nervous system in the pathogenesis of Chagas disease.

Evidences accumulated over the last decade give adequate proof for the existence of circulating antibodies in Chagas disease which binds to beta adrenergic and muscarinic cholinergic receptor of lymphocytes and myocardium. The interaction of the antibodies with lymphocytes and cardiac neurotransmitter receptors behaving as an agonist, triggers in the cells intracellular signal transductions that alter the physiological behaviour of this cells. These events converted the cells in pathologically active cells. Thus, antibodies activating beta adrenergic receptors of T helper (Th) lymphocytes incr

Role of the autonomic nervous system in the rabbit sphincter of Oddi.

In vivo myoelectrical activity and pressure of the SO have been studied in intact, vagotomized and splanchnicectomized rabbits. Preganglionic nerve sections made no significant differences compared to the control group. Acetylcholine (3-11 mu g/kg) and adrenaline (1-50 micrograms/kg) increased and decreased respectively the myoelectrical activity. Hyoscine (0.5 mg/kg) and verapamil (35 micrograms/kg/min.) but not pentolinium (2 mg/kg) inhibited the excitatory activity of ACh; phentolamine (3 mg/kg) but not propranolol (3 mg/kg) antagonized the inhibitory activity of adrenaline. It can be concl

[Block of the autonomic nervous system in the study of sinus function].

Blockade of the autonomic nervous system by injection of propranolol (0,2 mg/Kg) and atropine (0,04 mg/Kg) was carried out in a series of 48 patients classified in 3 groups:--Group I:sinus bradycardia (22 cases)--Group II:suspected tachycardia-bradycardia syndrome (14 cases)--Group III:suspected sinus node dysfunction (12 cases). Two parameters were studied after autonomic blockade: observed intrinsic sinus node frequency (OIF) and corrected "adjusted" sinus node recovery time (CASRT). The results were compared with those obtained during basal electrophysiological investigation. The OIF was ab…

On participation of the autonomic nervous system in the mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis.

With the view of studying the role of autonomic nervous system in chemical carcinogenesis mechanism in outbred white male rats, chronically treated with NDEA, there has been investigated the modifying effect of some neurotropic pharmacological drugs which cause either stimulation or inhibition of: 1. adrenergic processes (noradrenalin, isoproterenol, clonidine, pyrroxane and propranolol); 2. cholinergic processes (proserine and atropine); 3. the function of the central nervous system (CNS)--caffeine and ethanol. Pharmacological activation of alpha-adrenoreceptors or blocking of both beta-adren…

[Autonomous nervous system and bile ducts (author's transl)].

Storage, concentration and excretion of bile in the extrahepatic bile duct system are rather complicated processes being regulated by the autonomous nervous system. Groups of ganglionic cells and nerve fibers are located in the papilla, the neck of the gall bladder, and to a lesser degree in the wall of the gall bladder, that is to say in parts of the system which are important in regard to coordination of the excretory function. The number of ganglionic cells decreases in diseases which go along with functional disorders of the bile duct system. If the papilla Vateri and the duodenal musculat

The effect of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system on auditory fatigue.

Volunteers with normal hearing were tested for vegetative balance with the aid of vegetative reflexes and with the aid of the atropine test. The effect of white noise stimulated on hearing thresholds was then investigated together with their recovery. The vegetative system was affected experimentally by intravenous administration of atropine, and the beginning and recession of hearing fatigue was observed. Atropine caused a small change only. In a similarly arranged experiment, 1% pilocarpin administered subcutaneously in a dose of 1.4 minus 1.6 ml, resulted in increased hearing fatigue and re
