We report a case of axillary artery aneurysm with brachial artery embolism in a 60-year-old man who had walked with the assistance of axillary crutches all of his life since poliomyelitis during infancy had left him with lower limb paralysis. We performed bypass grafting from the axillary to brachial artery with exclusion of the aneurysm. An axillary artery aneurysm is rare, but potentially lethal for the upper extremity; therefore, surgical treatment should be considered.

Severe aortic stenosis typically presents with reduced exercise tolerance, exertional chest pains, or syncope. We report on a case of a young female on therapeutic anticoagulation and a history of nephrotic syndrome, who presented with subacute limb ischaemia resulting from axillary artery thrombus. Urgent echocardiogram demonstrated a bicuspid aortic valve with critical stenosis, and she underwent surgical aortic valve replacement. Her presenting symptoms resolved after three months of warfarin therapy. This case highlights the importance of systemic evaluation of unexplained arterial thrombo

The axillary artery is the continuation of the subclavian artery in the upper limb on both the sides of the human body. The axillary artery gives off six branches along with two terminal branches, but manifests various branching patterns, knowledge of which is useful for clinicians. A formalin fixed donated cadaver was used and the axillary region was dissected according to Cunningham's Manual of Practical Anatomy. This case report describes a unilateral common trunk arising from the second part of the axillary artery, giving off lateral thoracic, posterior circumflex humeral, circumflex scapu

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist devices are increasingly used for circulatory support in patients with cardiogenic shock or severe left ventricular dysfunction. However, their use is associated with complications, most notably vascular complications.
CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 63-year-old woman who developed a right axillary artery thrombus following removal of an Impella 5.5 left ventricular assist device after recovering from cardiogenic shock. The patient underwent emergent mechanical thrombectomy and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty with stent placement, successfully r

Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder of connective tissue which has many clinical symptoms and whose prognosis depends on associated cardiovascular complications, dominated by proximal aortic disorders. Peripheral arterial aneurysms are rare during Marfan syndrome and are exceptionally indicative of the disease. We report the case of a large aneurysm of the axillary-subclavian artery in pre-rupture revealing a new case of Marfan syndrome. Treatment consisted in surgical repair by resection of the aneurysm and performing a venous bypass graft; the postoperative course was uneventfu

BACKGROUND: Axillary artery injuries can be associated with both proximal humeral fractures (Naouli et al., 2016; Ng et al., 2016) [1,2] as well as shoulder dislocations (Leclerc et al., 2017; Karnes et al., 2016) [3,4]. We report a rare case of an isolated axillary artery truncation following blunt trauma without any associated fracture or dislocation.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old male presented to the emergency department for evaluation after falling on his outstretched right arm. The patient was found to have an absent right radial pulse with decreased sensation to the right arm. Point of ca

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to review and compare our experience with 3 upper extremity access techniques (percutaneous single-sheath brachial, multi-sheath brachial cutdown, and axillary cutdown with conduit construction) in the setting of complex endovascular repair of paravisceral aneurysms.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of a prospectively collected endovascular aneurysm repair database. All patients who underwent parallel stent grafting or fenestrated repair with upper extremity arterial access were included. End points included the following: (1) local access com

We treated a patient with acute aortic dissection, which affected the innominate and carotid arteries. Although the true lumen was adequately wide and cerebral malperfusion deemed unlikely, extracorporeal circulation through the femoral artery caused right cerebral malperfusion, and addition of right axillary artery perfusion was ineffective. Several minutes after innominate artery snaring, cerebral blood flow was suddenly restored and the clinical outcome was favorable. Axillary artery perfusion is occasionally unreliable and inevitably demands careful cerebral flow monitoring. A dead-end fal

Traumatic arteriovenous fistula between the axillary artery and vein may present a difficult problem in treatment. There are few reports demonstrating the endovascular repair of this challenge. Herein, we present such a case of endovascular repair of traumatic arteriovenous fistula between the axillary artery and vein with false aneurysm formation. The patient was discharged 11 days after successful operation. Oral clopidogrel and aspirin were administered for 18 months. At one year follow-up, the patient was in good condition and showed no evidence of neurological deficit in the left upper li

OBJECTIVES: Neuroprotection is of paramount interest in cardiac surgery. Right axillary artery cannulation is well established in aortic surgery because it significantly improves survival and outcome, but malperfusion of the right brain after direct cannulation has been reported. Anatomically, 4 vessel segments are potentially amenable for cannulation of the subclavian and axillary arteries. Clinical studies vary widely in dissection sites and cannulation techniques. We investigated critical flow dynamics in the right brain caused by arterial inflow after direct cannulation and specified cannu

We report the first case of a purely isolated axillary artery dissection because of focal blunt trauma to the axilla. A 42-year-old man presented to our outpatient orthopedic clinic 7 days after a fall during a hockey game whereby another player's skate blade struck the patient directly in the axilla without disrupting the skin. The patient denied having any symptoms of shoulder dislocation but experienced some pain and numbness, which subsided rapidly. Then he developed a cool hand with exertional claudication. Physical examination revealed absent radial and brachial pulses. Computed tomograp

Axillary artery pseudoaneurysms are rare. We report on a 30-year-old patient with a 6.5-cm post-traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the left axillary artery two months after a knife stab wound of the shoulder. The patient showed axillary fullness and signs of severe brachial plexus compression. A surgical repair was undertaken. The aneurysm was excluded and a saphenous vein interposition was performed. The early and late postoperative periods were uneventful. This is probably not only the largest axillary artery pseudoaneurysm ever reported, but also the first secondary to a stab wound.

Large-vessel involvement is increasingly recognized in giant cell arteritis (GCA) and frequently occurs with an unspecific systemic inflammatory syndrome or fever of unknown origin. We describe the case of a 68-year-old woman with a history of polymyalgia rheumatica who presented with progressive weight loss, unexplained anemia, and a marked humoral inflammatory response. Diagnosis of large-vessel GCA was facilitated by axillary artery auscultation, revealing a bilateral axillary artery bruit. The diagnosis was confirmed by color duplex sonography and temporal artery biopsy. In elderly patient

Although proximal humeral fractures are common diagnosis in emergency, cases of axillary artery injuries are rare. Authors present a patient, who underwent high energy trauma during a traffic accident like a pedestrian. Comminuted proximal humeral fracture was complicated with an occlusion of the third part of the axillary artery. There was necessary an urgent surgery, ostesynthesis with locking plate and reconstruction of the axillary artery by interposition of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) graft. Postoperative course was uncomplicated, patient had no symptoms of ischaemia of extre

Axillary artery perfusion is an attractive alternative to reduce the frequency of atheroembolism in extensive atherosclerotic aorta and aortic aneurysms. This study was conducted to evaluate the flow dynamics of axillary artery perfusion. Transparent glass models of a normal aortic arch and an aortic arch aneurysm were used to evaluate hydrodynamic properties. Streamline analysis and distribution of the shear stress was evaluated using a particle image velocity method. In the normal aortic arch model, rapid flow of 80 cm/s from the right axillary artery ran out from the brachiocephalic artery

A case of bullet embolus from a pulmonary vein to the right axillary artery is reported. Though bullet embolization is unusual, it should be considered in any patient who has sustained a gunshot wound and does not have an exit wound, and whose plain films demonstrate a bullet far from the suspected path of the projectile.

Vascular injury is a rare complication of anterior dislocation of the shoulder joint. Two cases, both in elderly persons (65 and 74 years) were treated in our Department during a 5-year period. Atherosclerotic changes of the axillary artery and previous shoulder dislocation are predisposing factors for such injury.

Various shoulder injuries can give rise to axillary artery complications. Two such cases were admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital late last year. Both were young adult males, who had developed axillary artery thrombosis secondary to shoulder injuries. The following is a short discussion on the common types of shoulder injuries, how they result in axillary artery compromise and a short section on their management and treatment.
