Associations of cumulative violence and structural vulnerability with restless sleep among female sex workers in Baltimore, Maryland.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate correlates of restless sleep among street-based female sex workers (FSW) in the United States, an understudied population experiencing high rates of structural vulnerabilities (e.g., homelessness, food insecurity) and trauma. METHODS: Using data from a cohort of street-based cisgender FSW (n = 236; median age = 35 years, 68% non-Hispanic White), we examined cross-sectional associations of individual, interpersonal, and structural factors with frequent restless sleep over the past week (5-7 vs. <5 days). RESULTS: Participants reported a high prevalence of homelessnes

Correlates of non-medical prescription drug use among a cohort of injection drug users in Baltimore City.

Despite reports of increasing non-medical prescription drug use, relatively few studies have systematically evaluated the prevalence and correlates of non-medical prescription drug use, particularly in populations that might be especially vulnerable (e.g., injection drug users [IDUs]). We examined factors associated with non-medical prescription drug use among a community-based cohort of current and former IDUs in Baltimore (The ALIVE Study). We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from cohort participants that responded to a survey that included questions on non-medical prescription d…

Natural history of Diagnostic Interview Schedule/DSM-IV major depression. The Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Natural history can be characterized by incidence, recurrence, and duration of episodes. Research on the incidence of major depression is rare; studies of recurrence and duration are limited to clinical samples. METHODS: The Baltimore, Md, site of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program followed up its 1981 baseline cohort of 3481 respondents with an additional assessment in 1993 to 1996. Interviews were obtained from 1920 respondents (73% of the survivors). The Diagnostic Interview Schedule and the same survey procedures as in 1981 were used, augmented with a Life Chart Intervie…

A Longitudinal Analysis of Residential Mobility and Experience of Client Violence Among Women Who Exchange Sex in Baltimore.

Residential mobility remains an underexplored yet critical construct that may influence the risk of violence among women who exchange sex. This study examined the longitudinal relationship between residential mobility and experience of client-perpetrated physical or sexual violence among women who exchange sex in Baltimore, Maryland. Participants were at least at 18 years of age, were cisgender women, reported having engaged in transactional sex three or more times within the last 3 months, and were willing to be contacted for 6-, 12-, and 18-month follow-up visits. Analyses of responses from …

CAUSES OF MORTALITY IN CAPTIVE PANAMANIAN GOLDEN FROGS ( ATELOPUS ZETEKI) AT THE MARYLAND ZOO IN BALTIMORE, 2001-2013.

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is home to the largest captive assurance population of the critically endangered Panamanian golden frog ( Atelopus zeteki). With the ongoing extinction that is occurring worldwide in amphibians, the need for amphibian captive assurance populations is growing, and few mortality reviews on amphibian species exist. Necropsy and histopathologic examination of animals that die in captivity can help identify population-level disease problems, direct research needs in amphibian medicine and husbandry, and improve the success of captive breeding programs. This study revie…

The role of social network and support in mental health service use: findings from the Baltimore ECA study.

OBJECTIVE: A significant number of people with mental illness do not use mental health services to receive treatment for their symptoms. This study examined the hypothesis that social network and social support affect mental health service use. METHODS: Data were from the Baltimore cohort of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area study, a prospective cohort study that gathered data over four time points. This study examined data gathered in 1993-1996 (N=1,920) and 2004-2005 (N=1,071). The study examined indicators of social network and social support in relation to four types of service use (genera…

Long-term cocaine use is related to cardiac diastolic dysfunction in an African-American population in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Only limited studies have been done on the effects of long-term cocaine use on the human heart, and the results remain controversial. In this study, we examined and compared the diastolic function of non-cocaine users and chronic cocaine users to reveal the impact of long-term cocaine use on the human heart. METHODS: Two-dimensional echocardiogram and pulsed Doppler transmitral blood flow pattern were obtained from 138 recruited study participants with different cocaine histories. The indices of cardiac structure and function were measured from the echocardiogram of each participa

Criminal justice involvement, structural vulnerability and social safety net services among people living with HIV in Baltimore.

Mass incarceration has shaped the environment of HIV transmission, yet there is limited research on the conditions that enhance or mitigate access to health and social resources for people living with HIV (PLWH) with criminal justice (CJ) involvement. This paper aims to explore structural vulnerability, social safety net services, and criminal justice involvement among PLWH. Among a communitybased sample of 336 PLWH in Baltimore, Maryland, we compared measures of structural vulnerability and access to safety net services on the outcome of either recent involvement or no involvement in the CJ s…

Anxiety disorders and risk for suicide attempts: findings from the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment area follow-up study.

Our objective was to determine whether the presence of an anxiety disorder was a risk factor for future suicide attempts. Data were drawn from the 13-year follow-up Baltimore Epidemiological Catchment Area survey (n=1,920). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between baseline anxiety disorders (social phobia, simple phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, or agoraphobia) and subsequent onset suicide attempts. The presence of one or more anxiety disorders at baseline was significantly associated with subsequent onset suicide attempts (adjust…
