A brief report of the prevalence of chronic and acute health conditions among blind American adults.

BACKGROUND: Prior research demonstrates disparities in the prevalence of certain chronic and acute health conditions among persons who are blind (PWB) compared to non-blind persons, such as diabetes and infectious diseases. However, a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence of chronic and acute health conditions among PWB is currently lacking. OBJECTIVE: The present study addressed this gap by examining the prevalence of chronic and acute conditions among blind persons, and examining differences by gender. METHODS: The present study surveyed 410 PWB residing in the U.S. about their hea

A Comparison of Mental and Behavioral Health Risks Factors Associated With Current Dual Use of Electronic Cigarette and Conventional Tobacco Cigarettes With Exclusive Tobacco Cigarette Use and Nonuse Among Adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While health risks associated with tobacco cigarette use are well-known, additional risks of dual use are poorly understood. This study compared mental and behavioral health risk factors associated with the current dual use of e-cigarettes and conventional tobacco cigarettes with current exclusive users of tobacco cigarettes and nonusers of either e-cigarettes or tobacco cigarettes. METHODS: Data from the 2016 National Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) were analyzed (N = 277,034). Current dual use was defined as the current use of tobacco cigarettes…

HIV behavioral surveillance among the U.S. general population.

HIV behavioral surveillance in the United States is conducted among three groups: infected populations, high-risk populations, and the general population. We describe the general population component of the overall U.S. HIV behavioral surveillance program and identify priority analyses. This component comprises several data systems (ongoing, systematic, population-based surveys) through which data on risk behaviors and HIV testing are collected, analyzed, and disseminated. Multiple data systems are needed to balance differences in scope and purpose, as well as strengths and weaknesses of the s

Youth risk behavior surveillance--United States, 2001.

Priority health-risk behaviors, which contribute to the leading causes of mortality and morbidity among youth and adults, often are established during youth, extend into adulthood, are interrelated, and are preventable. This report covers data during February-December 2001. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among youth and young adults; these behaviors contribute to unintentional injuries and violence; tobacco use; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmi

Homelessness History Impacts on Health Outcomes and Economic and Risk Behavior Intermediaries: New Insights from Population Data.

Using data from the Washington Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, this study assesses the relationship between homelessness history and physical and mental health outcomes as well as between homelessness history and health risk behaviors and economic precariousness as important intermediaries of subsequent health outcomes. Study results indicate that persons with a history of adult homelessness have consistently poorer health outcomes as compared to never homeless persons, and that even after accounting for childhood adversity and social assets, adult homelessness remains a consistent…

State-Level Prevalence of Obesity/overweight and Pancreatic Cancer Incidence in the United States: An Ecological Analysis Using BRFSS, CDC WONDER and ACS for the Year 2021.

PURPOSE: While obesity is established as an individual-level risk factor for pancreatic cancer (PC), population-level associations remain unclear. This study examines whether state-level overweight/obesity (O/OV) prevalence corresponds with age-adjusted PC incidence across the United States. METHODS: We conducted an ecological, cross-sectional analysis using 2021 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for state-level O/OV prevalence (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²) and CDC WONDER for age-adjusted incidence rates (AAIR) of PC per 100,000 population. Demographic covariates such as per…

Adverse childhood experiences and human immunodeficiency virus testing among adults with human immunodeficiency virus risk behaviours.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with poor HIV testing in adulthood yet, they have not been extensively described in those at increased risk for HIV. Cross-sectional analysis data (n = 204,231) on ACEs and HIV testing were obtained from the 2019-2020 Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance Survey. Weighted logistic regression models were used to access the association of ACEs exposure, ACEs score, and ACEs type with HIV testing among adults with HIV risk behaviours, and stratified analysis was also performed to examine gender differences. The results indicated the overall
