Germinomas and teratoid siphon anomalies in softshell clams, Mya arenaria, environmentally exposed to herbicides.

Seminomas and dysgerminomas are epizootic in softshell clams, Mya arenaria, from three Maine estuaries contaminated with herbicides. The first epizootic was discovered in 22% of clams collected as Searsport near Long Cove Brook and three culverts that conveyed heating oil and jet fuel spilled from a tank farm in 1971. Data from subsequent epizootiological studies and a series of long-term experimental exposures of softshell clams to no. 2 fuel oil, JP-4, and JP-5 jet fuel at the U.S. EPA, Environmental Research Laboratory in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and in the field did not support an etiol

High-frequency observations of toxigenic microalgae and phycotoxins reveal contrasting HAB dynamics in the Beagle Channel.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose a recurrent threat to sub-Antarctic coastal ecosystems such as the Beagle Channel. Here, we used a 15-month high-frequency dataset (January 2021-April 2022) to assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of toxigenic microalgae and associated phycotoxins across multiple compartments, including plankton, bivalves, and passive samplers, together with concurrent oceanographic and meteorological conditions. Alexandrium catenella was the dominant toxic species, producing paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) during two consecutive austral summers with contrasting intensity. The 2

Toxic effects of atrazine on freshwater mussels (Elliptio complanata).

Atrazine (ATR) is a commonly found herbicide contaminant in water bodies across the United States. In this study, native freshwater mussels (Elliptio complanata) were investigated to determine histopathological effects and bioaccumulation of ATR under laboratory conditions. Mussels were collected from the Rice Creek Field Station, Oswego, NY, and were exposed to two different concentrations of ATR (15 and 150 μg/L) for 4 weeks. Histopathological phenotypes induced by ATR include reduced or no ciliary epithelium, ciliary cells merged or completely absent, skeletal rods and connective tissue red

Integrated Vibrio load variation and transcriptome profiles provide new insights into the defensive response of Cyclina sinensis under Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the dominant pathogen in mariculture, leading to the bivalves' mass summer mortality. This study investigated the antibacterial defense mechanism of the Cyclina sinensis against V. parahaemolyticus. The immersion challenge revealed that the daily mortality of C. sinensis increased and then decreased gradually, and the mass mortality occurred about a week after V. parahaemolyticus infection. The Vibrio load in the hepatopancreas of C. sinensis was dramatically increased at 12-24 hpi (hours post-infection) and then declined significantly at 2-7 dpi (days post-infection

Multifunctional Mussel-Inspired Hydrogels and Films Formed via Catechol-VO2 Nanoparticle Coordination.

Marine mussels utilize DOPA-V metal coordination bonds as dynamic cross-links to fabricate tough and self-healing coatings and glues. Inspired by mussels, researchers have harnessed DOPA-metal coordination to create dynamic and mechanically responsive polymeric materials. Here, we harness the robust DOPA-V interactions observed in mussels combined with the temperature-responsive properties of vanadium dioxide (VO2) to develop a room-temperature process to produce thermochromic VO2 hydrogels and films. 4-arm polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers functionalized with DOPA-catechol moieties were mixe

Transposable Elements and Sex Chromosome Evolution in Eulimnadia texana.

INTRODUCTION: Sex chromosomes often evolve through suppressed recombination and accumulation of transposable elements (TEs) on the sex-limited chromosome, leading to divergence and eventual degeneration. The clam shrimp Eulimnadia texana possesses proto-sex chromosomes (Z and W) at an early evolutionary stage, providing a unique opportunity to examine the initial genomic changes underlying sex chromosome differentiation. Additionally, both sex chromosomes are expressed in homogametic ZZ and WW shrimp, allowing a regular expression of both sex chromosomes in homozygotes. METHODS: We analyzed n

Understanding planktonic diatoms to inform site selection for shellfish offshore aquaculture systems.

Sustainable bivalve aquaculture offers a solution to rising food demand. This study aimed to help identify suitable offshore shellfish aquaculture sites in coastal upwelling regions. Here, planktonic diatom abundance, crucial for bivalve growth, is a key success factor. A successful bivalve production area was analysed to understand how diatom dynamics and upwelling influence a suitable location for shellfish offshore aquaculture. A diatom-based criterion for site selection is proposed. Surface water samples were collected over two years in southwest Iberia, near a major upwelling centre. Phyt

Life cycle of the seabird digenean Gymnophallus minor (Gymnophallidae) in the Arctic.

Gymnophallidae is one of the digenean families featuring bivalves as first intermediate hosts. However, the exact bivalve host species remain unknown for most members of this family. Gymnophallids have been one of the targets in our continuous efforts to reveal the diversity of digeneans in the higher north. Here, we focus on Gymnophallus minor, which we found in eiders from various locations in the Arctic and sub-Arctic. Sexual adults (maritae) of G. minor can be easily identified because they have a distinctive character: the roughly equal size of the pharynx and the ventral sucker. We also

Parvatrema spp. (Digenea, Gymnophallidae) with parthenogenetic metacercariae: diversity, distribution and host specificity in the palaearctic.

There are several species of gymnophallid digeneans in the genus Parvatrema that are unique in developing metacercariae that reproduce by parthenogenesis in the second intermediate host. Transmission of these digeneans takes place in coastal ecosystems of the North Pacific and North Atlantic seas. The first intermediate hosts are bivalves, the second ones are gastropods, and the definitive hosts are migratory birds. We integrated data accumulated over 25 years of research and differentiated a complex of five closely related species. They differ in the molluscan second intermediate hosts, distr

Potential roles of hydroxybenzoate paralytic shellfish toxins in modulating toxin biokinetics in scallops.

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) produced by some marine dinoflagellates can cause severe human intoxication via vectors like bivalves. Toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum produce a novel group of hydroxybenzoate PSTs named GC toxins, but their biokinetics in bivalves haven't been well examined. In this experiment, we analyzed PSTs in bay scallops Argopecten irradians exposed to G. catenatum (strain MEL11) to determine their accumulation, elimination, anatomical distribution, and biotransformation. To our surprise, up to 30% of the PSTs were accumulated in the adductor muscle of scallo

Transcriptional response of key metabolic and stress response genes of a nuculanid bivalve, Lembulus bicuspidatus from an oxygen minimum zone exposed to hypoxia-reoxygenation.

Benthic animals inhabiting the edges of marine oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) are exposed to unpredictable large fluctuations of oxygen levels. Sessile organisms including bivalves must depend on physiological adaptations to withstand these conditions. However, as habitats are rather inaccessible, physiological adaptations of the OMZ margin inhabitants to oxygen fluctuations are not well understood. We therefore investigated the transcriptional responses of selected key genes involved in energy metabolism and stress protection in a dominant benthic species of the northern edge of the Namibian OMZ,

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in bivalve mollusks and marine sediments.

The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater pose the question of whether this new pandemic virus could be released into watercourses and potentially continue to finally reach coastal waters. In this study, we employed two bivalve molluscan species from the genus Ruditapes as sentinel organisms to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 signals in the marine coastal environment. Estuarine sediments from the natural clam banks were also analyzed. Viral RNA was detected by RT-qPCR, targeting IP4, E and N1 genomic regions. Positive samples were also subjected to a PMAxx-triton viability RT-qPCR assay

Effectiveness of a combined New Zealand green-lipped mussel and Antarctic krill oil supplement on markers of exercise-induced muscle damage and inflammation in untrained men.

Green-lipped mussel oil (PCSO-524®) has been shown to attenuate signs and symptoms of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), and krill oil has been shown to have a protective effect against cytokine-induced tissue degradation. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of PCSO-524® and ESPO-572® (75% PCSO-524® and 25% krill oil) on signs and symptoms of EIMD. Fifty-one untrained men consumed 600 mg/d of PCSO-524® (n = 24) or ESPO-572® (n = 27) for 26 d prior to and 72 h following a downhill running bout. Mussel-inspired anti-biofouling and robust hybrid nanocomposite hydrogel for uranium extraction from seawater.

A major challenge of uranium extraction from seawater (UES) is to effectively block the biofouling without destroying the ecological balance, especially prevent the attachment of macroalgae on the surface of the adsorbent. Herein, a robust montmorillonite-polydopamine/polyacrylamide nanocomposite hydrogel is reported by a two-step method, including PDA intercalation MMT and further free radical polymerization with AM monomers. The interpenetrating structure of hydrogel lead to high water permeability with the swelling ratio of 51, which could fully facilitate the internal accessible sites expo

Biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces by combining mussel-inspired adhesion with lotus-inspired coating.

Superhydrophobic surfaces on PET textiles were fabricated by combined bioinspiration from the strong adhesion of marine mussels and the two-scale structure of lotus leaves under mild conditions. Dopamine can spontaneously polymerize in alkaline aqueous solution to form a thin adhesive layer of polydopamine (PDA) wrapping on the micro-scale fibers. The as-formed thin PDA layer worked as a reactive template to generate PDA nanoparticles decorated on the fiber surfaces, imparting the textiles with excellent UV-shielding properties as well as a hierarchical structure similar to the morphology of t

Cadmium-induced changes in trace element bioaccumulation and proteomics perspective in four marine bivalves.

Bivalves are employed widely as biomonitors of metal pollution and proteomics has increasingly been applied to solve ecotoxicological issues. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Cd exposure on the bioaccumulation of other trace elements and reveal the molecular mechanisms using proteomics technologies. The results showed that Cd exposure resulted in remarkable changes in body concentrations of Zn, Cu, Ag, Co, Ni, Pb, and Se in four marine bivalves (scallop Chlamys nobilis, clam Ruditapes philippinarum, mussel Perna viridis, and oyster Saccostrea cucullata). Generally, the bivalves e

Influence of metal exposure history on trace metal uptake and accumulation by marine invertebrates.

This paper reviews recent studies on the influence of trace metal exposure history on subsequent metal uptake in marine invertebrates, particularly bivalves and barnacles. Trace metal exposure may induce specific metal-binding ligands. Metallothionein-like proteins appear to play an important role in mediating metal uptake and hence accumulation, especially for Cd. Other ligands such as sulfide are important for Ag biokinetic changes in bivalves. The incorporation of trace metals into metal-rich granules appears to have little if any effect in modifying trace metal uptake. Furthermore, metals
