Periodical follow-up evaluations at intervals from 3 to 6 months of haematocrit, blood volume and ferrokinetic, during a 2.5 year period were performed in 18 polycythaemia vera (PV) patients to find the most characteristic parameters for the determination of the erythropoietic system functional activity. Our results suggest that in PV it is advisable to carry out further determination of red cell volume to determine exactly the degree of erythrocytosis. We found that plasma iron turnover (PIT) followed by 59Fe T1/2 are the first parameters to return to normal and the first to alter after a pro

Reviewed are the causes of hemorrhagic shock, pathophysiology of blood loss as well as clinical signs and diagnostic measures. The problematic nature of determination and judgement of blood loss, especially at internal bleeding and during operations is pointed out. Measures for prevention and stanching of bleeding are touched. Blood, blood plasma and colloids (dextran, gelatine and hydroxyethyl starch) for volume replacement and their side effects are discussed briefly.

Evaluation of the value of the systolic pressure variations (SPV) under mechanical ventilation and of its components (delta down and delta up) in predicting fluid responsiveness in patients after coronary surgery by comparison with classic parameters. A prospective, randomized study, on 50 patients who underwent CABG surgery, in the early postoperative period (the first two hours). We assessed the following parameters: CO, CI, CVP, PCWP, SAP, DAP, MAP, SVP, delta down and delta up. The including criteria were: sinus rhythm, CI < or = 2,5 l/min/m2, PCP < 18 mmHg. All the patients underwent a flu

It is difficult to apprehend certain precarious hemodynamic states with classical parameters alone; the help of a flow-directed pulmonary artery catheter is necessary in order to define the disease accurately and reach a rational therapy. The problem is easily solved by the use of a Swan-Ganz catheter. The authors have selected 50 observations to help them make clear the indications of this method in surgery and traumatology: it appears necessary to use this method not only in specialized surgery such as valvulary surgery under CEC, but also in the treatment and prevention of non-cardiogenic p

Increased blood flow velocity (BFV) in basal cerebral arteries measured by transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS) is a stroke risk factor in sickle cell disease (SCD). Raised BFV may be caused by vessel narrowing or by hyperperfusion. In 44 SCD patients and 14 controls, intracranial arterial BFVs and global cerebral blood flow (CBF) were analyzed by TCCS and extracranial duplex ultrasound, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography were performed in all patients with pathologic intracranial BFV rise. Intracranial BFVs and CBF in SCD were significantly highe

BACKGROUND: The optimal control of blood volume without fluid overload is a main challenge in the daily care of intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Accordingly this study focused on the identification of biomarkers to help characterize fluid overload status.
METHODS: Sixty-seven patients were studied from ICU admission to day 7 (D7). Blood and urine samples were taken daily and sodium and water balance strictly calculated resulting in a total cumulative assessment of ∆Na+ and ∆H2O. Furthermore, plasmatic biomarkers (cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine, renin, angiotensin II, aldosterone, pr

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to predict ischemic cerebrovascular diseases by noninvasive methods before overt symptoms develop. Advanced carotid and cerebral atherosclerosis reduce common carotid blood flow volume due to increased resistance of peripheral circulation. According to a study in which clinical and pathological specimens were compared, the lower threshold for the flow volume in normal individuals has been confirmed to be 6.5 ml/s. We investigated the possibility that the development of ischemic cerebrovascular diseases can be predicted based on blood flow volume.
METHOD: We conduct

BACKGROUND: An increase in pulmonary capillary blood volume secondary to angiogenesis has been described in Kaposi's sarcoma. The value of the pulmonary capillary blood volume as an early marker of pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma was evaluated.
METHODS: In a prospective study 45 HIV positive patients (nine asymptomatic for Kaposi's sarcoma, 29 with cutaneous or mucocutaneous Kaposi's sarcoma, and seven with pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma), underwent pulmonary function tests and determination of transfer capacity for carbon monoxide (TLCO) with its components, pulmonary capillary volume and membrane fa

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the reproducibility of estimation of power Doppler-derived fractional moving blood volume (FMBV) in the uterine cervix of women with uncomplicated pregnancies.
METHODS: Two experienced operators evaluated 30 uncomplicated singleton pregnancies at 20-24 weeks of gestation. The PDU box was positioned in a mid-sagittal view of the cervix, including the internal os and external os, in the same plane as that in which cervical length is measured. Two consecutive examinations were performed by each operator, in each of which the cervical length was measured and five consecutiv

The effects of glucocorticoids (GC) on the blood-to-tumour barrier transport (BTT) and tissue blood volume (Vb) and aspects of brain tumour acid/base balance were studied in patients with brain tumours using positron emission tomography (PET). BTT was assessed by 82Rb/PET and quantitated as K1 (unidirectional transport constant), tissue blood volume was also measured by 82Rb/PET. The parameters were evaluated following start of GC. The pH was assessed with 11C-DMO/PET as a single measurement in patients receiving GC. GC treatment reduced the tumour K1 20% to 30%, within 6 to 24 hours following
