We report the cloning, expression, and characterization of a novel member of the mammalian UDP-GalNAc:polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase (ppGaNTase) family that transfers GalNAc to a GalNAc-containing glycopeptide. Northern blot analysis revealed that the gene encoding this enzyme, termed ppGaNTase-T6, is expressed in a highly tissue-specific manner. A method has been developed for the determination of inorganic (InHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in solubilized tissues with continuous-flow (flow injection) cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. Kidney, liver, and brain tissues were spiked with MeHg and InHg and solubilized at an elevated temperature in a solution containing 90 g/L NaOH, 2 g/L L-cysteine, and 4 g/L NaCl. Total mercury determination was achieved by continuous-flow cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry using an inlet system containing a flow through photo-oxidation reactor and sodium borohydride as the mercury reductant.

An improved, high-yield synthesis of the corresponding N-carboxypentyl derivatives of three iminoalditol glycosidase inhibitors has been developed for affinity chromatography enzyme purification. Reductive amination of 1-deoxynojirimycin (or its D-manno or D-galacto analogues) with methyl 5-formylvalerate and NaBH3CN at neutral pH afforted an aminoester which upon hydrolysis with aqueous 5% HCl gave the desired aminoacid in 97% overall yield. Nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) has increasingly been used for environmental remediation and in toxic waste treatment. Most applications exploit its large surface area and high reactivity, the latter being a function of zerovalent iron content.
