Maria Adelaide brace in the management of Scheuermann's Kyphosis.

PURPOSE: This prospective observational study aims to assess the MA brace effectiveness in hyperkyphosis correction, focusing also on patients' compliance of bracing and its psychological impact. METHODS: Patients referring to our spine outpatient department with Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) from January 2011 to January 2017 were prospectively recruited. Patients were divided into two groups, according to their global thoracic kyphosis (TK): Group-A TKT0 < 60°, Group-B TKT0 ≥ 60°. The MA brace was prescribed according to SRS criteria. Full spine X-rays were analyzed at conventional times: at t

3D analysis of brace treatment in idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: We have evaluated the effect of bracing in scoliosis on coronal alignment in a cohort of patients. Current literature has not described the specific effect of bracing on the 3D shape of the scoliotic curves. The purpose of this study was to analyze the variability of the 3D effect of bracing on idiopathic scoliosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The spines of 30 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis were reconstructed using biplanar stereoradiography with and without the brace. The Cobb angle, sagittal and pelvic parameters and transverse plane parameters were calculated. The variab

The role of bracing in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease.

BACKGROUND: Treatment methods in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) have varied during the 100-year history of this disorder. This is a review of the present practice of bracing in LCPD. METHODS: Published articles from the last 35 years were reviewed including primary analyses of bracing, meta-analysis, and summaries of present opinion. The recent literature was also evaluated to determine the present bracing practices. RESULTS: Studies performed regarding specific braces failed to show that they offer any advantage over other methods of management, including no treatment. Similarly, meta-an…

The experience of brace treatment in children/adolescents with scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic scoliosis is a chronic illness with several different braces used for its treatment. Brace treatment during childhood/adolescence can produce stress. There are studies supporting that it can decrease body-image perception while other studies support that it has no such effect. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of brace treatment in children/adolescents with scoliosis. The aim was to investigate which feelings are created by the bracing experience in children/adolescents with scoliosis and what are the children/adolescents' with scoliosis opinions of …

Brace treatment of early infantile tibia vara.

We reviewed 24 children (42 extremities) who had a diagnosis of early infantile tibia vara treated by using a brace. The indication for bracing was either a varus deformity that was not improving by age 18-24 months, or a persistent varus deformity seen in a patient older than 24 months. We prescribed an above-the-knee brace with a free ankle, single medial upright with valgus-producing straps, and either no hinged joint or a locked hinge joint at the knee. The braces were worn during the day and were removed for bedtime. The patients were followed up for an average of 27.2 months (range, 12-7…

Tenotomy and postoperative brace treatment for muscular torticollis.

A postoperative corrective brace for congenital muscular torticollis is introduced and the results and indications for its use are presented. Thirty-three of 55 patients who underwent open tenotomy of the sternocleidomastoid muscle with application of the brace following surgery were evaluated in follow-up. Tenotomy was performed at the sternoclavicular origin of the muscle. The mean age at operation was six years; the mean follow-up period was seven years. The results were good in 21 patients (64%), fair in seven (21%), and poor in five (15%). Facial asymmetry remained in all patients over th

Bracing arms increases the capacity for sustained hyperpnea.

Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) frequently lean forward, bracing their arms. We wondered whether the resulting shoulder girdle support improves the function of the ventilatory pump. We tested this possibility in 4 normal men by measuring the maximal ventilation that they could voluntarily sustain for 4 min while seated with their elbows braced firmly on a table and while seated with their elbows held just above the table. Bracing the arms increased ventilatory capacity significantly in all subjects, but the magnitude of the change was small (8%). We attribute

A study of function after tibial cast bracing.

103 patients with fresh unilateral fractures of the tibial shaft were reviewed clinically and radiologically to assess the results of treatment by functional bracing. At review, 84 had returned to their previous employment and all but 22 could run. All had full knee movements, 85 per cent had a normal range or a mild loss of subtalar movement, and only 11 patients had greater than 25 per cent reduction of measured ankle movement. The average shortening measured radiologically was 0.5 cm. Angulation greater than 10 degrees was present in 1 patient. Factors leading to delayed union include commi

Tonguedness in speech: Lateral bias in lingual bracing.

This study examines the lateral biases in tongue movements during speech production. It builds on previous research on asymmetry in various aspects of human biology and behavior, focusing on the tongue's asymmetric behavior during speech. The findings reveal that speakers have a pronounced preference toward one side of the tongue during lateral releases with a majority displaying the left-side bias. This lateral bias in tongue speech movements is referred to as tonguedness. This research contributes to our understanding of the articulatory mechanisms involved in tongue movements and underscore

The histidine brace: nature's copper alternative to haem?

The copper histidine brace is a structural unit in metalloproteins (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 2011, 108, 15079). It consists of a copper ion chelated by the NH2 and π-N atom of an N-terminal histidine, and the τ-N atom of a further histidine, in an overall T-shaped coordination geometry (Nat Catal 2018, 1, 571). Like haem-containing proteins, histidine-brace-containing proteins have peroxygenase and/or oxygenase activity, where the substrates are notable for resistance to oxidation, for example, lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs). Moreover, the histidine brace is an invariant unit around
