Concentrations of soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 and E-selectin in breast cyst fluid and their relation with cyst type.

Gross cystic breast disease may be associated with a higher risk of breast cancer. There are two groups of mammary cysts: those lined by apo … mechanism of entry into mammary cysts. The significance of these soluble cell adhesion molecules in breast cyst fluid requires elucidation.

Interleukin-1 and interleukin-6 in breast cyst fluid: their role in regulating aromatase activity in breast cancer cells.

Gross cystic breast disease is a common benign disease which may be associated with an increased risk for breast cancer. Breast cyst fluid (BCF) contains many steroids, peptide growth factors and proteins. We have now identified interleukin-1 (IL-1) and IL-6 in BCF by specific radioimmunoassays. Concentrations of IL-1 were similar in BCF with low or high Na+/K+ ratios (ratio less than 3 vs greater than 3; 357 +/- 72 pg/ml vs 308 +/- 126 pg/ml). In contrast, IL-6 concentrations were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) in BCF with a Na+/K+ ratio greater than 3 (2.75 +/- 2.34 ng/ml) compared …

A case of breast cancer developed in the chronic expanding hematoma cyst wall.

No studies have reported breast cancer cases developed in the chronic expanding hematoma (CEH). Case presentation: A 47-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for the treatment of a large breast mass. Ultrasound showed that the tumor had an intra-cystic tumor pattern. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the mass component showed a hypo intense pattern on T1-weighted images, a mosaic pattern on T2 weighted images, and a faint enhancement on time-signal intensity images. Core needle biopsy pathologically showed connective tissue, hematoma, and hemosiderin laden macrophages neither with any

Accumulation of 4- and 5-ene steroid sulfates in human breast cyst fluids.

Gross cystic disease of the breast is one of the most common diseases of adult females. Breast cyst fluid contains various steroid hormones. In order to obtain more information about the concentrations of 4- and 5-ene steroids in human breast cyst fluids, levels of pregnenolone sulfate (PREGS), pregnenolone (PREG), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A total of 35 human breast cyst fluid samples, obtained from 35 patients (28-54 years old) were analyzed. Cyst fluid electrolytes were simultane…

Oncostatin M, interleukin 2, interleukin 6 and interleukin 8 in breast cyst fluid.

Women with breast cysts lined by apocrine epithelium (intracystic Na/K < 3) may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than those whose breast cysts are lined by "flattened" epithelium (intracystic Na/K < 3). In this study, the concentrations of the cytokines, oncostatin M (OSM), interleukin 2 (IL-2), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interleukin 8 (IL-8) were measured in breast cyst fluid, OSM, IL-2 and IL-6 having been shown to have growth-inhibitory actions on tumour cells. All cytokines were measured by "sandwich" enzyme immunoassays. IL-2 was not detectable in breast cyst fluid. OSM, IL-6 …

Esterase activity in human breast cyst fluid: associations with steroid sulfates and cations.

Human breast cyst fluid (BCF) contains an esterase that on the basis of electrophoretic mobility and response to inhibitors differs from those found in the plasma. From a total of 384 BCF samples analyzed for esterase using p-nitrophenyl hexanoate as substrate, 149 (39%) showed significant activity. The samples had been analyzed for the concentrations of the sulfates of estrone, estriol, dehydroepiandrosterone, as well as the potassium and sodium cations (K+/Na+). The data were submitted to statistical analysis using the Spearman rank order test. The esterase-positive samples exhibited a signi…

Structures and concentrations of fifteen different steroid sulfates in human breast cyst fluids.

By applying capillary gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), a simultaneous quantitation of all important steroid sulfates present in a number of breast cyst fluids, has been obtained. The fact that prevailing androgen sulfate structures in the cyst fluids are different from those in blood suggests at least intracystic metabolism of blood-born precursors. Particularly greater amounts of 5 alpha-reduced steroids are found in breast cysts. 5 alpha-Androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol is a major androgen sulfate of breast cyst fluids, its concentration being some 200…

Postoperative Pericardial Cyst Enlargement After Recurrent Breast Cancer: Distinguishing Benign vs Malignant Etiologies.

BACKGROUND: Pericardial cysts (PCs) are benign congenital anomalies typically managed conservatively. Interval enlargement in patients with active malignancy may mimic metastatic pericardial involvement. CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old woman with previously treated right-sided ductal carcinoma in situ presented with new ipsilateral breast lobular carcinoma. A right-sided pericardial lesion was incidentally identified during workup, and cardiac-gated computed tomography characterized this as a PC. Seven months after bilateral mastectomies and adjuvant chemoradiation, the patient underwent bilatera

Intraparenchymal Epidermal Inclusion Cyst Within a Fibroadenoma in the Breast: A Case Report.

Epidermal inclusion cysts are benign lesions that arises from the proliferation and entrapment of epidermal elements within the dermis, characterized by a lining of stratified squamous epithelium and an accumulation of keratin debris. While epidermal inclusion cysts are commonly located in areas such as the scalp and neck, their occurrence in the breast is rare. In some instances, the cyst can arise in atypical locations, including the nipple and parenchyma. This report presents a 40-year-old female patient who presented with a progressively enlarging lump in the right breast, initially diagnos

Breast Hydatid Cyst: Diagnosis and Treatment of a Rare Case with Spontaneous Rupture.

Background: Hydatid cysts, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, are uncommon in the breast but are observed in endemic regions of the Eastern Mediterranean. This study evaluates the diagnosis and treatment of this rare occurrence of breast hydatid cyst and its spontaneous rupture. Case Presentation: A 33-year-old female patient presented to our clinic with a mass in the right breast that had been growing for 9 months and causing intermittent pain. Physical examination revealed a well-defined, firm mass with regular borders and some soft areas. Ultrasonography reported a complicated cyst(?). Whil

Unusual presentation of epidermoid cyst mimicking breast cancer involving the areola-Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermoid cyst is very common benign lesion of the skin. And may appear anywhere on the surface of the body. Diagnosis is made in most cases by clinical examination, but histological evaluation may be needed in unusual cases. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a rare case of a 44 year-old woman who presented with a rapidly growing inflamed mass localized to the left areola, which grew to 4 cm in diameter within a few months. The diagnosis of malignancy was ruled out following pathology examination consistent with epidermoid cyst. After a course of antibiotics, she underwent surger

Squamous cell carcinoma arising in epidermal inclusion cyst of breast: a diagnostic dilemma.

Epidermal, or inclusion, cysts are frequently seen benign lesions that are lined with stratified squamous epithelium. Malignant transformation of these is rare, occurring in 0.011% to 0.045% cases [1]. We herein report an unusual case of squamous cell carcinoma occurring in an epidermal cyst of the breast in a middle aged lady.

Benign breast cyst without associated gynecomastia in a male patient: a case report.

Benign simple breast cysts are commonly seen in female breasts and can present as palpable masses. They are distinctly uncommon, however, in the male breast. We report a case of simple benign cyst of the breast in a 58-year-old man newly diagnosed with mantel cell lymphoma. The cyst was first identified incidentally on a staging contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography. Further evaluation with mammography and ultrasound revealed a mass that would be typically characterized as a benign simple cyst, but was biopsied since cysts are not known to occur in male breasts. Pathology results from ul…

Transforming growth factor alpha, beta 1 and beta 2 in breast cyst fluid.

Women who have palpable breast cysts lined by apocrine metaplastic epithelium (intracystic Na/K < 3) may have a higher risk of breast cancer than those who have breast cysts lined by flattened epithelium (intracystic Na/K > 3). Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) exerts a proliferative effect on many cell types and may play a role in mammary carcinogenesis. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) stimulates the proliferation of mesenchymal cells but inhibits mammary epithelial cell proliferation and may exert a protective effect against breast cancer development. The aim of this st…

Relationships between oestrogen-inducible proteins, oestradiol and electrolyte ratio in breast cyst fluid.

Women who have breast cysts with intracystic Na+/K+ < 3 may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who have breast cysts with intracystic Na+/K+ > 3. In this study wide-ranging intracystic concentrations of cathepsin D and pS2 (oestrogen inducible proteins/polypeptides) as well as oestradiol were found. The concentrations of cathepsin D and oestradiol were significantly higher in the low electrolyte ratio cyst group than in the high electrolyte ratio cyst group. No significant difference was found between pS2 concentrations in the two groups. The significantly higher intracy…
