In people with cancer, multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPMNs) are not unusual, and they may be caused by risk factors such as genetics, viral infection, smoking, environmental factors, or treatment-related variables. The frequency of MPMNs occurring in the same or separate organ systems is between 2% and 17%. The 5-year breast cancer survivors have been found to have around 3.6% chance of acquiring another neoplasm. In this case report, we present a very rare simultaneous occurrence of two highly malignant tumors - triple-negative breast cancer and cutaneous melanoma. We performed geneti

The embryologic origin of the breast is related to salivary and sweats glands. Thus, breast neoplasms may show differentiation toward these tissues, although this is a rare event in humans. We report the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of a 57-year-old woman presenting with a spiradenoma that originated in breast tissue and became malignant 40 years later. Some histogenetic concepts relevant to this case are discussed, along with a brief review of this neoplasm.

Mutations in the chromatin remodeling gene ARID1A have recently been identified in the majority of ovarian clear cell carcinomas (OCCCs). To determine the prevalence of mutations in other tumor types, we evaluated 759 malignant neoplasms including those of the pancreas, breast, colon, stomach, lung, prostate, brain, and blood (leukemias). We identified truncating mutations in 6% of the neoplasms studied; nontruncating somatic mutations were identified in an additional 0.4% of neoplasms. Mutations were most commonly found in gastrointestinal samples with 12 of 119 (10%) colorectal and 10 of 100

Tuberculosis and cancer are two processes in relationship. The relation between both are studied. We analyzed retrospectively the culture-positive tuberculosis cases in from 1999 to 2002. We described the six cases with tuberculosis and cancer. One hundred and five cases of tuberculosis were observed, 6 cases (5.7%) had cancer. Four cases were pulmonary tuberculosis, one tuberculous pleurisy and other urinary tuberculosis urinary. The two cases with bronchogenic neoplasm had a diagnosis of tuberculosis at same time than cancer. The diagnosis of neoplasm was previous than tuberculosis in two ca

7054 malign neoplasms were observed at the I. Univ.-Frauenklinik of Vienna in the years 1950-1969. 142 cases were multiple primary neoplasms, i.e. 2.01%. In 51 cases the double neoplasms were situated in the genital region (local multiplicity), in 91 cases was there a separated multiplicity with the cancer of the breast dominating. A third of the multiple neoplasms was synchronous, the two other thirds were metachromatic with the peak in the first years after the diagnosis of the gynecologic neoplasm. 5 cases of triple neoplasms were specified.

Intraventricular neoplasms are uncommon central nervous system lesions that account for only 10% of all neoplasms and are unusual location of metastatic breast cancer. A 73-year-old woman with a medical history of breast carcinoma without any signs of metastatic lesions in the liver, lungs or bones and with an intraventricular tumorous lesion found on multislice computed tomography of the brain is presented. Surgery was indicated in order to confirm the diagnosis histologically and to gain local control of the metastasis. The patient was operated on using the neuronavigation guided transcortic

Cutaneous metastases are uncommon in daily practice, although very important, since they may be the first manifestation of an undiscovered primary neoplasm or the first indication of recurrence. Cutaneous metastases from the breast are the most frequent in women and cutaneous metastases from the lung are the most frequent in men. Thyroid carcinoma, despite representing the most frequent endocrine neoplasm, is considered a rare neoplasm, corresponding to 1% of malignant neoplasms diagnosed. Cutaneous metastases from follicular carcinoma are rare and occur mainly in the head and neck area. We re

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma is a primary salivary gland neoplasm with histologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular features identical to those of secretory carcinoma of the breast. Similar neoplasms have now been reported to occur in various nonmammary sites including the parotid gland, submandibular gland, sinuses, lip, skin, thyroid gland, and lung. We report, to our knowledge, the first example of a primary vulvar neoplasm with pathologic features identical to secretory carcinoma of the breast and an ETV6-NTRK3 fusion.

BACKGROUND: According to recently published data, prophylactic mastectomy (PM) appears to prevent about 90% of the expected malignant neoplasms in women with a family history of breast cancer.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the frequency of high-risk lesions in PM specimens and to determine occurrence of any new primary breast cancer following PM.
DESIGN: We performed a retrospective study of women undergoing unilateral or bilateral PM. Medical charts and pathologic findings of 35 patients who underwent bilateral mastectomies at University Hospital, Syracuse, NY, from 1989 to 1996 were reviewed. Pa

An analysis of 489 breast cancer pedigrees was conducted to determine the age at diagnosis and bilaterality rate in 887 patients with different familial patterns of the disease compared with 5,100 unselected patients, and to estimate the lifetime probabilities of breast cancer development in 983 daughters of familial patients. The familial patients had higher rates of bilaterality and were younger at diagnosis than patients in an unselected series. Bilaterality rates were highest in young patients. Familial bilateral patients developed their first primaries about 5 years earlier than unilatera

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma is a rare neoplasm usually confused with other neoplasms in the salivary glands region. It has great similarity with the breast carcinoma. We report a case of a patient who presented with gingival submucosal bleeding and lesion, with the initial histopathological examination revealing salivary gland neoplasm of low crane. Computed tomography revealed the lesion near the tooth 27, with extension to the floor of the left maxillary sinus and to the palate mucosa. Resection of the infra-structure was performed, with a diagnosis of breast cancer secretory carcin

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer affecting women and it represents an important economic burden. The aim of this study was to estimate the socio-economic burden of breast cancer (BC) in Italy both from the National Health Service (NHS) and the government perspectives (costs borne by the social security system).
METHODS: The economic analysis was based on the costs incurred by the NHS from 2008 to 2016 (direct costs related to hospitalizations) and by the National Social Security Institute (INPS) from 2009 to 2015 (costs of social security benefits) for patients with brea

Metastatic neuroendocrine neoplasms to the breast are rare and histopathologic overlap with mammary carcinomas has led to misdiagnosis. We present a case of a middle-aged woman with diplopia and a right medial rectus mass. Metastatic breast cancer was initially suspected based on a history of invasive ductal carcinoma. Detailed immunohistochemistry of the orbital biopsy, gallium-68 dotatate positron emission tomography-CT, and reevaluation of her prior breast specimen, demonstrated that her initial breast carcinoma diagnosis was in error and she was ultimately diagnosed with a previously unkno

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has transformed our understanding of oncogenic pathways and mutational processes underlying many breast tumors. Although large-scale NGS studies included mostly common invasive breast carcinomas, the genetic landscapes of several less common or rare special histologic types and other breast tumors have now also been elucidated. Many of these lesions harbor highly specific types of mutations or rearrangements/gene fusions, including invasive lobular carcinoma, tall cell carcinoma with reversed polarity, most salivary gland-like neoplasms, fibroepithelial neoplas

Over recent years, immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has revolutionized the clinical management of various solid neoplasms, including melanoma and lung carcinoma. A proportion of these malignancies exhibit a baseline immunological configuration that can be successfully targeted with ICIs to support durable clinical responses. Conversely, breast neoplasms other than the triple-negative subset respond poorly to ICIs, reflecting numerous tumour-intrinsic and microenvironmental barriers against effective anticancer immunity. Notably, most hormone receptor-positive breast cance

OBJECTIVES: Metastatic neoplasms involving the stomach are rare and diagnostically challenging if clinical history of malignancy is absent or unavailable. This study was designed to identify the tumors that most frequently metastasize to the stomach and the morphologic features that can provide clues to investigate the possibility of metastasis and predict the primary sites.
METHODS: All patients with metastatic neoplasms involving the stomach were included in the study. The H&E- and immunohistochemical-stained slides were reviewed, and all clinical, endoscopic, and radiologic information was

BackgroundSclerosing extramedullary hematopoietic tumor (SEMHT) is a rare entity that can occur in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms. It has been reported in various localizations including retroperitoneum, mesentery, liver, colon, lymph nodes, thyroid, and orbit. It is considered as late manifestation of the underlying myeloid neoplasm. It is clinically important to distinguish from extramedullary hematopoiesis, as well as mesenchymal tumors.PresentationA 81-year-old female patient with a history of left breast ductal carcinoma in situ who underwent breast lumpectomy followed by radi

OBJECTIVES: Angiosarcoma is a rare subtype of sarcoma that usually arises after radiation therapy for primary breast cancer. Primary sarcomas of the breast are rare entities and account for less than 1% of all malignant breast neoplasms. We examine our institutional experience with angiosarcomas of the breast that were diagnosed and treated between 1996 and 2007.
METHODS: To conduct a retrospective review, all female patients with a diagnosis of angiosarcoma of the breast were identified from our pathology database. Their hospital records were retrieved to gather information on treatment, tum
