Calcium antagonists and the kidney.

Calcium antagonists are frequently used to treat patients with hypertension or ischaemic heart disease. These patients often have renal impairment, so the effects of calcium antagonists on the kidney are important. The effects of calcium antagonists on renal haemodynamics are variable and depend on the state of the patient or animal and the dose of calcium antagonist used. Calcium antagonists cause natriuresis and diuresis by a mechanism which is not fully understood, but which is probably not directly due to the effects of calcium antagonists on renal haemodynamics. The diuretic effect may be…

[Calcium metabolism in dogs].

Calcium homeostasis is controlled both directly and by hormones. Directly as a result of the fact that the uptake of calcium from the intestine and its excretion by the intestine, kidney and skeleton are well attuned to one another. A process of diffusion of calcium through the intestinal wall occurs in addition to active absorption of calcium, particularly in young animals. The maximum excretion of calcium by the kidneys is one per cent of the amount of circulating calcium. The skeleton acts as a calcium buffer in which 99.5 per cent of the body calcium is present. As regards hormones, the ca…

Regulation of calcium metabolism.

This paper reviews the regulation of calcium metabolism in man. The body's calcium economy is determined by the relationship between the intestinal absorption of calcium, the renal handling of calcium, and by the movements of calcium in and out of the skeleton. These processes are influenced by many factors, the most important of which are parathyroid hormone and the hormones derived from the renal metabolism of vitamin D, notably 1,24-dihydroxyvitamin D3. The role of endogenous calcitonin in man is still controversial, but there are several other hormones which have some influence on calcium …

Calcium metabolism in sarcoidosis.

Fifteen patients with hypercalcaemia and sarcoidosis have been studied. Twelve were males of average age 34; the three females averaged 53. … became hypercalcaemic with corresponding clinical and biochemical changes. Steroids make normal the calcium abnormalities just as they do in straight vitamin D intoxication. However, in three further patients the hypercalcaemia did not respond to steroids and was shown to be due to the presence of an over-acting parathyroid gland, removal of which correct …

PARATHYROIDS AND CALCIUM METABOLISM.

The experiments reported in this article are in full agreement with the facts known about the action of Ca and Mg salts in tetanic animals. In the concentrations used here both Ca lactate and Mg lactate suppressed the muscular convulsions in the tetanic salamander larvae. The Mg lactate, however, appears to be more effective than the Ca lactate. At any rate the suppression of the tetanic convulsions does not seem to be a specific action of the calcium. The most important result seems to be the fact that the salts used, though they prevented the muscular convulsions, did not prevent the other s…

Sperm Intracellular Calcium Evaluation.

The evaluation of the intracellular calcium is essential in studying sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction, among other processes. Here, we describe the use of chlortetracycline (CTC) to study Ca2+ distribution in relation to the sperm capacitation state, and the evaluation of Ca2+ levels in spermatozoa using a low or a high-affinity Ca2+ dye (Rhod-5 N-AM and Fluo-4-AM, respectively) by flow cytometry. Rhod-5 N-AM staining method also allows the study of Ca2+ in subcellular compartments, whereas the changes in intracellular Ca2+ levels can be measured in spermatozoa loaded with Fluo-4-AM by…

Calcium Channel Blocker Overdose.

AUDIENCE: Emergency medicine residents and medical students on emergency medicine rotation. BACKGROUND: Calcium channel blocker (CCB) overdoses can be severe with potentially serious adverse outcomes. CCBs work by blocking the calcium channels on smooth and cardiac muscle tissue. At low dose ranges, dihydropyridine CCBs (such as nifedipine, amlodipine, and nicardipine) block the L-type calcium receptors in the peripheral vasculature, whereas non-dihydropyridine CCBs (such as: verapamil and diltiazem) affect the L-type calcium receptors in the myocardium.1 Because of this distinction, dihydrop…

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease.

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease is a consequence of the immune response to the pathological presence of calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) crystals inside joints, which causes acute or chronic inflammatory arthritis. CPPD is strongly associated with cartilage degradation and osteoarthritis, although the direction of causality is unclear. This clinical presentation is called CPPD with osteoarthritis. Although direct evidence is scarce, CPPD disease might be the most common cause of inflammatory arthritis in older people (aged >60 years). CPPD is caused by elevated extracellular-pyropho…

Mechanisms Underlying Calcium Nephrolithiasis.

Nephrolithiasis is a worldwide problem with increasing prevalence, enormous costs, and significant morbidity. Calcium-containing kidney stones are by far the most common kidney stones encountered in clinical practice, and thus, hypercalciuria is the greatest risk factor for kidney stone formation. Hypercalciuria can result from enhanced intestinal absorption, increased bone resorption, or altered renal tubular transport. Kidney stone formation is complex and driven by high concentrations of calcium-oxalate or calcium-phosphate in the urine. After discussing the mechanism mediating renal calciu…
