Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and basophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (BLR) are examined as markers for various diseases. For simple examination of blood disorders such as anemia, the results of blood cell counting using a small volume of blood sampled from a finger were evaluated. Because the sampling volume varies, tyramine was added to the blood dilution buffer as an internal standard. OBJECT: The authors undertook this study to determine white blood cell (WBC) counts in CSF obtained from lateral ventricles and myelomeningoceles (MMCs) in infants in a developing country at the time of their initial presentation for medical evaluation.
METHODS: CSF was aspirated from the lateral ventricles and from MMC sacs of 100 consecutive infants at Kijabe Hospital, Kijabe, Kenya. Peripheral blood WBC counts and CSF WBC counts were determined in the laboratory. CSF with WBC counts of 5 cells/mm(3) or greater was cultured.

A simple technique has been developed to quantitate the gastrin cells (G-cells) from the pyloric antrum of the rat. The antrum was digested in pronase to suspend the epithelial cells. This cell suspension was counted and pelleted. The pellet was embedded in paraffin, sectioned, then labeled using the indirect immunofluorescence technique specific for gastrin. BACKGROUND: The Sysmex DI-60 system (Sysmex, Kobe, Japan) is an automated cell image analyzer that captures and analyzes cell images. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of DI-60 for leukocyte differential count in comparison with manual differential count and XN-20.
METHODS: A total of 205 samples were analyzed and the agreement between DI-60 pre-classification and post-verification by medical technicians was determined. The correlation and ability to identify clinically important abnormal cells of DI-60 post-verification were then evaluated.

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori is a type of Gram-negative microaerobic bacteria that inhabits the gastric mucosal epithelium. It can cause various gastrointestinal diseases including gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer.
